The World Islands. A collection of 300 man-made islands built off the coast of Dubai to resemble an outline of the EARTH FROM THE SKY… Yet, after $13 billion was spent to complete them they’ve mostly been sitting there empty... I couldn’t believe this place actually existed.
So as a first stop on my trip I flew to Dubai to understand what happened and what their future holds… What are your thoughts? Amazing or too crazy of an idea?
Thank you to @MyDubai and @VisitDubai for helping us get in touch with the creators of these islands and for letting us go out to see the restricted areas.

I'm sure this year has had so many ups and downs for all of you as well so I hope to share some positivity through these stories I've captured. This is the first one out of my trip and I've got plenty more coming your way. Let me know what you think in the comments and I'll see you again soon

  • I have so many questions though. Ecological and economic concerns. Did the construction of the islands drive away marine life? Where did the brought-in sand come from and what methods did they use to make sure that the original place of the sand didn’t suffer any ecological disaster? Have they lost any money due to the slow buying process of the islands? etc. etc.

    @luisserra9155@luisserra91552 жыл бұрын
    • No to be a downer but to answer your questions: "Did the construction of the islands drive away marine life?" Yes "Where did the brought-in sand come from" The bottom of the ocean, destroying numerous marine habitats in the process. "what methods did they use to make sure that the original place of the sand didn’t suffer any ecological disaster?" Essentially none as far as I can tell.

      @max3446@max34462 жыл бұрын
    • They dredge the sand to create the island. Aka they take it from the sea floor and essentially pile it up into an island. The ship at 3:22 is doing this. It’s definitely bad for marine life

Their construction destroyed marine habitats and caused coastal erosion, and the breakwaters created huge sediment build-ups which buried coral reefs as it settled.
