How to Test MOSFET transistor using Multimeter by some easy methods
In this video, I have explained some methods of checking MOSFET transistor using a multi-meter.
The method is shown here for testing MOSFET is very easy. Here have used Enhancement N-channel MOSFETs (IRF832 and IRFP250N) to explain how to test MOSFET.
I have also explained How to identify the 3 terminals (Gate, Drain & Source) of MOSFET.
1st method:
In the first method, after you have identified the Gate, Drain & Source terminals of MOSFET, you can check the MOSFET in off state by connecting the black lead to the source terminal and red lead to drain terminal in diode testing mode. You should not get continuity between the source and drain at off state for Good MOSFET.
Then you have to charge the gate terminal and check the MOSFET at ON-state.
2nd method:
In the second method, we will check the MOSFET with the help of a simple circuit. I this method we will turn on and turn off the MOSFET and also control the Drain to source current by varying gate to source voltage.

I was wondering if someone could teach like. Look what I found. Thank you very much. Can you please make some videos about mother board chips the same way thank you
Thank you, super handy information which I've just used to identify a faulty MOSFET.
Thanks for the feedback
@@TechStudyCell can u show us P channel also ?
Thank you very much for this fine video. It helped me diagnose 2 out of 4 BS170 MOSFETs bad on my radio.
informative. thanks
Well done ! Provided one is grounded properly, preferably with an anti ESD wrap. Some of these MOS devices get zapped pretty quickly otherwise !
Thanks 😊
You've never been to India, there's so much humidity there static electricity is not a problem.
@@rsattahip When I accidentally discharged the lead on my failed Motor scooter control unit, I got a large spark. Those Mosfets can store a charge for a long time and more than once. I would short them with a 1,000 Ohm resistor just in case from now on.
Helped me to get my brain going again on fets. Im busy to do fault finding on small invertor so now i can make sure wheter my fets are ok or not. Thx for video
Very nice presntation - clearly explained and nicely demonstrated. Probably worth pointing out that the negative lead of some multimeters (particualrly the older analogue meters) have the black lead connected to the POSITIVE of the internal batttery. Also this will only work if the diode test position give a positive voltage of at least 5 V (normally - some may require a higher voltage)

Good video for basic testing. Can you show how to test the maximum current of the mosfet, as per data sheet?
Gud job .. thanku And pls explain the characteristics of Power MOSFET
Very well explained. Thank you.

Excellent video for checking the mosfets. I am diagnosing a Samsung tv power supply board. Great help. Thanks again.
Glad it helped
Nicely done! I got more out of your 3 minute video than 1 hour of reading. I am going to use your test circuit to match mosfets. So simple! For a given input I can swap mosfets and compare their output. For P channel mosfets I can reverse the polarity. I want to balance them for audio output devices. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Hello my friend I have a question for you when you have only voltage between Gate and the Drain and you test the continuity between source and drain without voltage ! does it beep ?
great tut

Thanks for the explanation. Helps a lot. I tried to do the same and got the results as you said. BUT, I tried with two types of AVO meter, one (with 3V supply) could do the test and the other with 9v battery could NOT do the test. The reading showed nothing. Could you please explain why? Thanks .

Thanks very informative, will appreciate mosfet in laptops how to check them in circuit
very nice and practical video ! can a IRF3710 mosfet replace an FET (SK2543) which has burnt ? thanks !

Not Complicated Explanation,so i can understand Easily,Keep in going
Thank you very much for help me.much appreciated, was the best.
sir if i set multimeter into ohm example X1 or X10 then test the negative pin to source and positive pin to drain are they the same result in diode setting? pls. reply thanks
Very good instruction to check mosfet.
Thanks
I will run some tests but here is my question to confirm my results. by reducing gate voltage you reduce current from drain to source, does this reduce voltage from drain to source also? I assume not. I'm excited to apply these MOSFETs to my project to eliminate bulky relays and have a safe circuit by limiting current. Way cool! I'm still trying to find the most reliable way to have dedicated 6v current to one circuit and 12v current to the other circuit from the same 12v supply. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you bro excellent tutorial stay safe and god bless 👍👍🙏
Thanks for the feedback
Good video but I have a question, I have a clamp meter 266FT with no diode test mode but it has ohm test labeled 2M, 20K and continuity test labeled 200. Can I use it to test Transistors? Or I should purchase another multimeter
well done

Can I test the transistors 2SK2221 G/S/D when they are still in the amp unpowered of course? They all test 375/1750. Guessing the caps are blown.

Thanks
Good!
Well done.Thanks.I wrote notes of it for future.Waiting for further videos.
All the best
Thank u now i can start repair my amplifier i hope only the mosfets are distroid
super explain sir👌👍
In your test circuit, can't see how you get a negative reading on your DVM. +ve terminal of DVM is connected to G terminal of Fet (10kpot wiper). If pot set to bottom . Wouldn't it read 0 volts and then only go +ve as pot is increased?
You are absolutely right.
Superb
What's the difference between the mosfet health check that I do on my channel and what you do?

Great lesson thanks! But please tell me why a 100 ohm resistor is needed in the circuit and how does one determine what size resistor to use? Thanks very much!
In my electronics class, a 100 Ohm resistor is always used at the Base of a transistor in series with the test lead.

actually a quite funny way to test them!
5:32 The voltmeter is displaying -8.21 V. If the meter was connected between gate and source, it is impossible to show such value. The only possible way for the meter to display such value is when the meter is connected between gate and drain.
Yes. The V meter reading goes from -8.24V to +4.86V = 13.1V quite a trick with a 9V battery! The voltmeter is reading between whatever voltage the variable resistor is set to, and the voltage swing between the 100ohm resistor and the MOSFET.
Symmetrical supply, +9 0 -9 he didn't show us the picture , battery is hidden
@@Blue.star1 But there is only one 9v battery in the circuit diagram.
@@johndoggett808 watch carefully the wiring , may be no 2nd 9v batt. is there, how can we get - v unless he connects reverse measuring across somewhere else , he might have connected reverse as mosfet switches at -5 V
@@Blue.star1 I agree with Walkalone. When the MOSFET is off, the Meter’s + terminal is at about 0.8v (the Gate (0.8 = 9v - the 8.2v meter reading)). And the negative voltmeter Terminal is at +9V via the 100ohm resistor. When he turns the gate voltage up to 3.5v (9v-5.5v at 6:06) the MOSFET starts to turn no. After this the negative terminal of the volt meter is on the voltage divider between the 100 ohm resistor, and the partially turned on MOSFET. At 6:13 he turns the gate voltage to its highest value, and the MOSFET is pulling the negative voltmeter terminal down the 0v, and the positive voltmeter terminal is the gate voltage.
Is it always that multimitere supplies enough to gate to switch it on, or need to supply higher voltage for some
Great job and understandably thanks
Glad it helped
