How to Test MOSFET transistor using Multimeter by some easy methods

2024 ж. 4 Мам.

In this video, I have explained some methods of checking MOSFET transistor using a multi-meter.
The method is shown here for testing MOSFET is very easy. Here have used Enhancement N-channel MOSFETs (IRF832 and IRFP250N) to explain how to test MOSFET.
I have also explained How to identify the 3 terminals (Gate, Drain & Source) of MOSFET.
1st method:
In the first method, after you have identified the Gate, Drain & Source terminals of MOSFET, you can check the MOSFET in off state by connecting the black lead to the source terminal and red lead to drain terminal in diode testing mode. You should not get continuity between the source and drain at off state for Good MOSFET.
Then you have to charge the gate terminal and check the MOSFET at ON-state.
2nd method:
In the second method, we will check the MOSFET with the help of a simple circuit. I this method we will turn on and turn off the MOSFET and also control the Drain to source current by varying gate to source voltage.

  • Very nice presntation - clearly explained and nicely demonstrated. Probably worth pointing out that the negative lead of some multimeters (particualrly the older analogue meters) have the black lead connected to the POSITIVE of the internal batttery. Also this will only work if the diode test position give a positive voltage of at least 5 V (normally - some may require a higher voltage)

  • I will run some tests but here is my question to confirm my results. by reducing gate voltage you reduce current from drain to source, does this reduce voltage from drain to source also? I assume not. I'm excited to apply these MOSFETs to my project to eliminate bulky relays and have a safe circuit by limiting current. Way cool! I'm still trying to find the most reliable way to have dedicated 6v current to one circuit and 12v current to the other circuit from the same 12v supply. Any advice would be appreciated.

    @solewalk@solewalk3 жыл бұрын
    • Yes. The V meter reading goes from -8.24V to +4.86V = 13.1V quite a trick with a 9V battery! The voltmeter is reading between whatever voltage the variable resistor is set to, and the voltage swing between the 100ohm resistor and the MOSFET.

      @Blue.star1@Blue.star13 жыл бұрын
    • @@Blue.star1 I agree with Walkalone. When the MOSFET is off, the Meter’s + terminal is at about 0.8v (the Gate (0.8 = 9v - the 8.2v meter reading)). And the negative voltmeter Terminal is at +9V via the 100ohm resistor. When he turns the gate voltage up to 3.5v (9v-5.5v at 6:06) the MOSFET starts to turn no. After this the negative terminal of the volt meter is on the voltage divider between the 100 ohm resistor, and the partially turned on MOSFET. At 6:13 he turns the gate voltage to its highest value, and the MOSFET is pulling the negative voltmeter terminal down the 0v, and the positive voltmeter terminal is the gate voltage.
