Indigenous Filipinos fight to protect biodiverse mountains from mining in Palawan

In the heart of the Philippines' Palawan province, the Victoria-Anepahan Mountains stand as a bastion of biodiversity, harbouring a unique ecosystem and serving as a vital watershed. However, the global transition to renewable energy is driving a boom in applications to mine nickel and other critical minerals in the mountains, posing a direct threat to the Indigenous Tagbanua communities who have long inhabited and stewarded these lands.
Together with downstream farmers, who worry about the impact mining will have on their water source, concerned citizens and local biologists, local communities are mobilising to head off this threat before its too late.
