The Kurdish people celebrate Newroz each year on March 21, which represents the Kurdish National Day and the start of the new Kurdish year (612 or 700 BC). The day before (March 20), bonfires are made in nature, on mountain tops, and candles are lit at home. The fire symbolizes a declaration of freedom from tyranny and occupation, as it illuminates the darkness of the night. The day following the bonfire is Newroz, which means ‘new day’, signifying the first day people can live in freedom.
On both days, Kurdish people venture into nature, prepare traditional Kurdish food, wear traditional Kurdish clothes, and perform the Kurdish dance (Ring dance).
Characteristics of Kurdish People: Shivan Perwer, a Kurdish artist, says in one of his songs: “This is us Kurds, we struggle, fight, and dance.” Kurdish people are beautiful and colorful in every sense - in their clothes, in their dance, in their food, and in their hearts.
