  • Well, I’ve been looking at buying a printer for ages, but this video has just given me a kick up the backside to splash the cash! My grandad used to print all the time, I also used to snoop round his dark rook when I was a kid, he got so much enjoyment out of it and I have many of his prints still. I think it’s now my turn to put ink to paper. Thanks Nigel!!

  • Superb tutorial Nigel! I appreciate your excellent clear narration and pace without distracting music in the background. And your home office and gear setup look fabulous! I have been wondering if it's worth the effort and expense to print for myself when a pro-lab I use for client work uses $200k Noritsu printers! They can turnaround a digital file delivered on a USB key in under 20 minutes, in whatever size I want. The caveat, of course, is limited paper choices. That said - your excellent tutorial is making me reconsider and start doing some personal printing. I won a high-end Epson printer in a photo competition a few years ago which has been sitting in my home office... gathering dust. I will use your tips and setup suggestions to seriously take a stab at it. If I fail... I'll just return to the photo lab. Cheers and thanks! Frederic in Montréal.

    • If you print frequently, you never have this problem. If you don't, unfortunately this is still a problem. Printers can use ink to clean and keep themselves running, but your printing costs go up either way. Unfortunately manufacturers' greed has made this hobby an expensive one. In theory they should be able to add a (12th, 13th?) cartridge (or bottle) of cheap cleaning solution but that would cut too much into their profits

This video shows that you have so much to share just from your experience. I miss the videos from woodlands where you show why and how to take a certain picture. • Just a tip about monitor color calibration: as time passes and the screen gets older the colors will change. That's why I've bought a calibration device myself: got a high quality screen here, but every three months when I recalibrate its colors have always shifted somewhat. I guess it depends on how close to perfect you want your screen to be: I still think it's worth the money to buy a quality color calibration device. We're spending thousands on gear: why cheap out on a 150-300 dollar (depending on your needs) device that can be used for countless devices (including televisions, with a laptop), will be used for a lot longer than the average camera nowadays and plays quite a large part in the quality of your final image? It's like putting cheap tires on a Ferrari.

When I compared the same print from the G550 and the Canon Pro 1000 12 ink printer on the same paper the main differrence was just in the shadows. However, I do have to calibrate my papers to the printer to get the ICC profiles as they are difficult to get from the manufacturers including Canon. The difference that the paper makes is incredible and thumbs up for showing the difference but it doesn't come over as well as seeing it for real, then you do get a mind blowing experience.👍
