I finally added an Atari Jaguar to my collection. But is NOW the right time to do it? What changed my mind?

Maybe I shouldn’t use the term “brand new games” when describing ports, but they are new releases on a 26 year old system. Pretty cool, right?
Yeah! Congrats on getting the Jaguar, it is definitely uncommon to get one boxed in good condition, like yours!
I keep being either the 666 or 667 person to liked a lot fo the channels I sub to. EPIC! HAPPY SHOCKTOBER!!! THIS vid was great. I never got to plau the jaguar. Always wanted to though.
That's agreed 😀
@Mike UK 1970 Probably for the same reasons we notice the way people in the UK say things differently..its just a simple different way of speaking. :P BUt more than likely if you pronounce it, theres a w sound in the enunciation thats kinda un avoidable; In America most folks say " JAG WAR" where as in the UK yall say " JAG U WAR" Life is silly. Tisnt Tit?! Tit tis...TITTIZZZ ^,;,^
@Mike UK 1970 - And while we're at it, why the HELL are we not on the Metric system?! I blame the Illuminati and Freemasons.
"Where did you learn to fly"
"Ah, come on! That's enough for that."
"Where did you learn to be an asshole?!"
Lol, AVGN rules...
AVGN’s Jaguar videos are some of my favourite videos he made.
Check out TheCinemassacreTruth subreddit.
"it has this loooong slot, I'm going to get into later" Nice.
Oh god
😳
I wanted one of these so bad when i was a kid, also a 3DO. Those 90's gaming mags had me brainwashed.
I wanted one... until those bad reviews started flowing in.
I love the first game, is a complete rip off of Bill Lambiers Combat Basketball
@@wmurray003 U mean u heard frm word of mouth? ahh da good ol 90z...
3DO was fucking awsome! Ahead of its time, its was more advanced the ps1 and came out before ps1 and even had bunch of the same games plus a lot more but it just didn't have the right promotion and. Buz before ps1 and n64 took off
Jaguar was the shits though
I looked at the specs of the upcoming jaguar in 1993 and thought "This is going to blow the opposition away" I then started an import company to distribute the Jag in the UK! it went as well as you're thinking. The lack of software support, negated its superiority over the other consoles of the time and it ultimately cost me a few quid before bailing. Was sorry to see it die, it was a far more technically advanced machine that what was around at the time, but what is the use of a game console with no games? didn't see that coming!
from my understanding the jaguar sold rather well in the uk, but the demand far outweighed the supply that atari could provide.
It’s not too crazy but crazy to know that Jaguar lives on as a dental camera. Imagin Systems, a manufacturer of dental imaging equipment, has since purchased the molding plates for the Jaguar's casing as with minor modification they were found to be the right size for housing their HotRod camera. The game cartridge molds were reused to create an optional memory expansion card.
@ron s : That’s brilliant, I love finding out random stuff like that!
True but they don't use those cameras anymore according to my brother lol (whos a dentist)
@Joe Musashi Can you say Coleco Chameleon? Yikes!
Hahahahaha..
ron s those dental cameras never actually went into production, and even if they did they would of been obsolete in a couple years.
I really like that people make homebrews for old consoles to this day.
I wonder how fan ports are made without access to the original source code. How is it possible?
When Hasbro aquired Atari's stuff way back, they released all Atari Jaguar related patents into the public domain which would include any code and made it an open platform. Which was a pretty cool thing to do.
I recently saw someone made Final Fantasy 7 in 8-bit for NES. It's amazing.
@Spooksville Scoob From what I understand parts of the source code for Diablo were reverse engineered back from machine code binary. The programming languages used to compile the code and the SDKs were well known, so by using this knowledge some of the source code was reverse engineered.
@Eissari4No they wouldn't be. There doesn't need to be a community for people to still play them.
I was at the Portland auction when they pulled this Jag out of the mystery box! It was the best thing in any of the boxes by far!
Nice video! Glad you got a Jaguar. I bought mine when they first came out. Still collect for it today!
Welcome to the Atari Jag family! I love mine. I would suggest getting a Jag CD, a Spinner controller, Tempest 2000, and Alien Vs. Predator. Other games to look into are : Brutal Sports Football, Doom, Primal rage, Raiden, Trevor McFur, and Wolfenstein 3D.
Moandain Designs I agree, a rotary controller works great with Rebooteroids and Tempest 2000. I wonder if MJ knows that he can use the keypad for Total Carnage...
Super Burnout, the best racer this console has. It's not so well known, but it's one of the very best games on the system.
Tempest 2000 was incredible. If you can only get one game, that's the one to have!
Are you for real! Trevor McFur is a train wreck of a game. It has to be one of the worst shooters ever made. I collect for the Jag and wouldn’t have that on my shelf. 😂
Tempest 2000 GOAT! I got Polybuis for PSVR; it's mind blowing
I remember the old video. Congrats on getting the Jaguar! Hope it brings you years of enjoyment!
The artwork on the box is amazing.
Thanks for all your work on this video. Very informative 👍
I really can’t believe that you’re going to review the Atari and tell everyone to ignore the one through nine keys. For anyone who has ever played doom or AVP in the later levels when you have a ton of guns , imagine being able to switch to whichever gun you want without having to scroll through each gun,, Sounds cool right just like how the PC guys had it? Well as long as you have the little cover that pops over the 1-9 pad you know exactly which number activates exactly which gun, the aliens versus predator game also utilized it well, I agree for most games you probably would ignore it but for the ones that utilize it it is a godsend.
Iron Soldier, Theme Park, Syndicate, Battlemorph, Cybermorph, Hover Strike, Doom all use the Number pad rather extensively.
Atari Jaguar's Garage yup 👍 . Exactly
AVP!
Don't forget alien vs. Predator were it comes with 3 slides for what character you choose.
That's actually usually the first game that comes to mind, but there were actually 3 plates for that game, the Human , the Predator & the Aliens
I loved the Jaguar. My friend had one. Glad to see it is getting love
I have my dad’s old jag and also the jag cd as well as a jag tap and four controllers (two regular and two pro). I now play the jag regularly and I love the console and especially tempest 2000. I love that you make a video about the jag because of the fact I have one. Thanks!
I had a Jaguar when I was young and I loved Alien vs Predator.
I need to find that game.
"If you haven't played Defender before, it's really easy"... I think I just discovered a combination of words that's never been said before, haha.
MJ: I think it's impossible to own every game console John Hancock: Hold my beard
Damn man, you just created visuals in my head of MJR stroking John Hancock's beard, which, no offense to either, is a little disturbing. And yet, it's a video I kind of want to see. Just for the weirdness.
This was on point funny as hell lol.
@Retro Dave oh nonono museum never ever
Hahaha! Well played, literally LOLed there!
Hancock is a joke.
Good video. I remember hearing about these from friends who thought they were the greatest system at the time. Never had an opportunity to play or see in action though, nice to finally see one in action. Thanks
Damn 700k? I didnt know your channel was gaining so much steam! I think I've been watching since 150kish. Keep up the great work! Love to see how your content has evolved and improved over the years.
What's strange is I was just saying to myself that I've never seen you do a review or buyer's guide for the jaguar. Then I look through your videos and saw that very video from 11 years ago. Fast forward, you buy one. Great video! It's currently my holy grail item. I also picked up soccer kid but for the Panasonic 3do. Good pickup man!
Back around 2008 and before it wasn't even a Holy Grail item...You could get the console with 2 controllers and a couple of games off ebay for around $50. Now it's ridiculously expensive because of KZhead and the game collecting renaissance.
The 3DO version of Soccer Kid is great, definitely the best version.
I don't even remember the Jaguar. 4:40 - LOVE the cartoonish effect!
Aw man, you have the cooler stuff! Here where i live (Brasil) we have trouble to find old games and consoles and when we find its super expensive, for comparisson, the average salary here is around R$2000, a ps4 costs R$2300 the 1TB version with 3 games, sometimes people asks R$500 on a used DS, so, it's kind hard to do a collection like yours, and that's why i love your videos so much! Congrats on the purchase and great work!
Wow never really knew much about this system. Thanks for sharing this video! Love the custom games so much.
Great video! Thanks for showcasing some Songbird titles, and I'm glad you're enjoying the new addition to your collection. :)
"If you haven't played Defender before, it's really easy" This must be some definition of "easy" I haven't encountered before.
My thoughts exactly. I must have destroyed half a dozen Atari 5200 joysticks trying to get better at Defender, with little success to show for it.
“It’s easy” to loose all your lives in less than 2 minutes anyway.
@@tedboggs4569 you could also play 5200 Defender with the awesome CX53 Trak-Ball Controller. That is, if you had/have one... :)
@@neilisabass 😂😂😂
I think he meant the concept of the game is easy to grasp
Ive always wanted a Jaguar, congrats on the pickup! When I got to play one at SoCal Retro Game Expo, what suprized me the most was how light the controllers are! O_O
Thanks for this review, as some of the homebrews you talked about looked not worth it when I initially saw them, but seeing them in motion and you discussing them makes them look good.
One of the problems with Jaguar games is that so many devs just treat(ed) it as a 68000 system w/ a few co-processors, so were barely more than ST/Amiga games w/ better colors. Granted, it was notoriously bad regarding dev tools and documentation, and even if devs learned how to use the Tom & Jerry chips better, there were RAM limitations and hardware bugs that added to the headache of trying to do more advanced stuff. Oh, and the card edge connectors on the back are AV (capable of composite, S-Video and analog RGB along w/ stereo audio) and DSP (that could handle things like networking). I think I still have some Jaguar stuff in a box somewhere (not system, but a few games and MemoryTrack cart for saving data for CD games). And it looks like you got a better controller. The original ones at launch have black keypad buttons (see back of system box), but they improved the feel of them a bit later and those improved ones have grey keypad buttons.
Nice to see someone actually mention Tom and Jerry 😄
Some of my favorites on the Jag along with Tempest, are also the ST ports like Star Wars & Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters. You should get a hold of a rotary controller as well as Rebooteroids and Tempest play soo much better with one! Iron Soldier was also mentioned, but if you do get a Jag CD, my favorite game on that is actually the sequel to Cybermorph called Battlemorph and is vastly better compared to Cybermorph.
I have just recently purchased one and am excited to dive into what the console has to offer great video!
Last year at PRGE I was there at your panel. I remember saying to you guys on the panel that I was a big time Jaguar collector and I think it was John Riggs kinda said under his breath “I’m sorry” like i was collecting junk. Funny, but there is a lot of fun to be had on the Jaguar and I’m happy your starting to get into it. Good things being done today for it. Especially at Reboot
Instead of svideo I highly recommend tracking down a GEN2JAG adapter. They pop up on eBay. This plus an HD Retrovision component cable will give you a much nicer RGB quality output. This can also be combined with a RetroTINK-2x.
16:44 "Sometimes a lotta joy can be found with something that's a little bit off-beat" thats gonna be my pickup line lmao
Great review, MetalJesusRocks. I would suggest buying the reproduction ProControllers from AtariAge's Store. There was such a huge demand for the improved Jaguar controllers that they were selling used on eBay for up to $500 each so a determined member of the homebrew community raised the funds to recreate them and have a new production run on them for more reasonable prices. And as of today, I've seen one of them modified to use a thumb stick instead of the DPad. A lot of the games being converted over from the Atari ST and [Commodore] Amiga computers are being done by Cyrano J and his allies. He's a master of the Jaguar's DSP chip and so he's been able to get it to play back audio from many different sound chips such as the Atari TIA, the Atari POKEY, Commodore SID, the DAC used in Williams arcade games and "pins", the YM2149, the YM2151, and the Amiga PAULA. So in a lot of these Jaguar conversions, he'll throw in options to play the games with the different audio sound chip versions. Plus, a lot of the games have tweaked graphics. The Atari ST conversion of Gauntlet II threw in support for the Jaguar's TeamTap so 4 players could play [the original Atari ST and Amiga versions required an adapter to their Parallel Printer Port(s) for 2 extra joystick ports]. AtariAge sells an adapter to plug in the Amiga or Atari ST Mice to play Defender of the Crown with. And SainT/RetroHQ's Jaguar SD Cartridge Adapter is almost complete. SainT famously developed the excellent SD Adapter for the Atari Lynx. Rebooteroids is called that because it was programmed by the Reboot group.
This is so cool! I didn’t know much about the jaguar or anything about the custom games. Very neat.
Speedball 2 is a classic! One of my top 10 all time games. It's a brilliant 2 player game and the single player has a surprising amount depth to it with training up and buying players on the transfer market. Big ups to the Bitmap Brothers!
And it is best played on the Amiga or the PlayStation...
Speedball 2 on thé megadrive was an pretty epic port !!
Oh man this really made me want a Jaguar! I loved the Amiga back in the day so it’s really cool to see Amiga ports on this. The home brew games look fantastic. - Edward
Ruiner Pinball was converted to the Jag back during its original shelf life. Thought I'd mention that...
Wow I am surprised you didn't actually have one. I have been a hardcore Jaguar collector and an owner originally since 1995 and still have all my original stuff and over 60 Jag carts and over 100 CD games for it. I'm like the Metal Jesus of the Jaguar!
A few months ago I stopped by this little thrift store down the street from my house and was shocked to see that they has STACKS of Jaguars New In the box unopened! this shop also had stacks of Playstation 1's new in the box as well as N64's! I bought a Jaguar, N64 and playstation for 80$ out the door. I'm loving the Jaguar and the only games the shop had was Doom, Aliens vs Predator and pole position.
What? Tell us more about this store of magical ₩izards
Eric Garman Stockton California, but they have since sold everything
Tempest2000 alone is worth it for the Jag :) many hours played
And along with it, Raiden, Alien vs. Predator, and id's own ports of DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D. Iron Soldier was also incredibly popular.
Amazing game music was pretty cool. Gaz 46 years old
Something I really like about this channel, is An impression I get from MJR in that while he may like to "collect" consoles and games, he actually likes to play the use the consoles and play the games.
I know many people that only collect the consoles and games and don't like to play them they only collect to collect me on the other hand I use my 3do and Japanese sega saturn (I was born in 96) and I actually love playing them
This brings back memories. Got one for Christmas back in '94, along with Doom and Kasumi Ninja. Loved my Jaguar!
YES... I HAD kUSUMI NINJA AS WELL AND ULTRA VORTEX
@@rodcooper7532 yup, I had Ultra Vortek too. Those games were so bad, but at the time they were great.
@@biggdigg84 exactly lol
Love your passion for your videos.
Get AVP, Tempest 2000, and Raiden. Some good ones for the jag.
Bought one when it released, wasn’t very impressed but then got hooked on Tempest. I also bought the cd add on when it was released and was even less impressed. Still collecting for it though, check out Iron Soldier... great game.
Downfall on Jag CD (homebrew) is quite possibly the best thing since sliced bread
Thank you for always bringing new info bout old school consoles. Video games will always keep on growing 😄
I got a Jaguar and I love it! I did not know about the home-brews...will definitely check them out. Also...Bubsy is not tooooo bad on there :)
The only reason I wanted that system was for Aliens vs Predator
Just had this image from somewhere in the back of my mind, an Alien fps of sorts for this system.. Am i confused or was that Alien vs Predator?? It looked amazing back then..
ShapeshifteR nope, they did have it for the system back then
@@NuKnightRider Cool, way ahead of it's time.. Thanks
Me to and I still never got it.
ShapeshifteR Stayed late up night playing AVP being 10 back the. and playing I was spooked when I would hear the predator in the background Still love that game to this day
I remember being at KB Toys and begging my mom to buy one that was marked down to $20!!
Did you get it? Can make 10x more now in box
Great move
I remember dreamcast on sale for 50 and I wanted it but couldn't afford it and parents wouldn't buy it.
I bought one in box for $25 at a game store somewhere between 2001-2004 can’t remember lol. It’s crazy because it had been setting on top of the store shelve for a very long time and nobody bought it. I just bought it out of Curiosity. It came with cybermorph game. Played a very few times and stored it away, mainly because you don’t see Atari Jaguar games in game stores. Planning on getting a flash cart whenever that’s released at a reasonable price. The good games cost to much.
What a shame.
3:55 xD very good review and your personal Note!
I was always rooting for the Jaguar since day one, glad to see it gets a little bit of love now.
As a proud Atari Jaguar owner I highly recommend to try the classic "Alien versus Predator" game.
My favorite jag game. So many memories with that one. And of course silent doom.
I use to play that game in the dark with the stereo turned up. My little brother was scared but we enjoyed it lol
And Doom. I believe the graphics were improved over even the DOS PC version in terms of color depth, and Carmack himself helped work on it.
I played a ton of VID Grid and NBA JAMS
Hmm. Classic is a very strong word ;)
I've wanted a Jaguar since I first tried a demo of AVP when it was released. I couldn't afford it then and probably can't afford it now with such demand in retro gaming. After watching this, I might have to disregard my gaming budget and just get one.
Wow just had a major nostalgia flashback to playing the jousting portion of Defender of the Crown for hours and hours at my friend's house on his C64 growing up. Thanks!
Great video. Didn't know that are coning out games for this system.
Oh man....clean shaven MetalJesus. It has been forever since then.
Alien vs. Predator and Doom are two must have games for the Jaguar.
Paul Davis yep and tempest 2000
How about Rayman?
Don’t forget about Wolfenstein.
Wolfenstein 3D too
Doom was definitely the best game on jaguar loved it and this alone made owning the jag worth it for me
Nice Jason, you actually bought something! - Welcome to the club :)
Never seen my pickups videos? I buy shit all the time LOL
@@MetalJesusRocks Yeah that is a fair response. You know why I said my previous comment and as valid as that may or may not be, it wasn't a very positive thing of me to displace on you. I apologise.
Speedball 2! Now that brings back some absolutely brilliant memories for me, I could never get used to the Jags controller but my God what a gaming system this was/is. 🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
I'll always remember HMV in the UK selling a ton of these in late 90's, (a while after it was discontinued) I keep kicking myself that I didn't snap one up.
Also it's JagUar, not JagWahhh!
I remember ads in the Dreamcast magazine selling them for £19.99 with the cd add-on being an extra 20 or something like that.
Frog feast was in the movie Grandma’s Boy.
@Tong Zou i agree. I friggin love that movie!
Did they ever release that on Blu-ray? I swear it's only on DVD and the cable channels...
I've had mine for a year or so. I like it even though I don't play it too often. It outputs really clean picture via RGB scart. I don't even have to upscale it to make it look good.
Had a Jaguar, Doom and Alien were both great! Even loved that pad and the buttons worked well with the cover for the buttons that came with the games 😀
9:55 literally the game from Grandma's boy.
I was looking for this comment lol
Thank you!! My God I couldn’t find this comment I’m these aren’t mid 30’s gamers watching this cuz they would know about the greatest video game movie ever made! Amateurs.. the lot of them!!

Which design you refer to?
@@Jackie_Fhan He has on one of my designs, he is wearing the Mega Rockman shirt. (as seen in the image he shows of him at the expo)
I still have my Atari Jaguar... I bought it in 1993 for the Alien vs Predator game, which was amazing.
Cool video. I've been interested in the Jag for some time now. For some reason it's surprising to see it run games like Doom and AVP. Every time it's like wow. Idk why. The retro toy store up the street from me has one.
"Do The Math!"
Most ironic slogan ever😆. They should’ve taken their own advice.
@@noxnc It was actually a pretty great slogan. It was lying without lying. And it was playing on the unreasonable criteria that gamers used to judge the quality of games.
JazGalaxy I was mostly kidding, but I just meant it is ironic that this is the slogan they used for a product that sold poorly and took down the company. If they had “done the math” they would have made different choices and not gone out of business. I was mostly joking though.🙂
Atari Corp was already in trouble; they took one last risk &it didn't pay off. They did leave the market in a relatively good way. They didn't run everything into the ground & go bankrupt; they shut down & merged with another company. This let them pay their employees, shareholders, etc.
Meth? No thanks, I prefer LSD... Oh, MATH
I get the feeling you'd really like "Base Wars" over on the NES as it's a Baseball / Giant Robots / Fighting game hybrid. ;)
I've heard that before. I'll need to hunt down a copy. Thanks!
Base Wars is an amazing game. As a baseball fan, it was my favourite baseball game during the NES era. But as soon as you discover the inherent flaw, of the pitch that is impossibe to hit... it loses all replay value.
I love ADG! Nice to see you over here.
@@MetalJesusRocks Base Wars was one of my childhood favorites
He might like Bill Lambeer's Combat Basketball on the SNES too
I definitely dig the fact that people are making new games for the jaguar, I loved mine back in the day and wish I still had it. My favorite games including of course alien vs predator, doom, Wolfenstein, super burnout, rayman, tempest, and I even enjoyed cybermorph the pack in game, it was more of a tech demo then anything else but I liked it regardless. One sad thing I am seeing with these new games made is the fact that none of them are taking full advantage of the jaguars power, most of these games look like Genesis and even the regular old nes. It would really be nice to see someone making a game that takes advantage of the power under the hood. Love your channel by the way got a new sub in me!
I got a jaguar and cybermorph for a birthday when my parents couldn’t afford a PlayStation, I loved it and had forgotten about it until your video! Thank you I want one again
I have a jaguar I'm my garage somewhere even have the cd player that plugs into it I should dig it out and play it
No joke the cd workings worth like 1000 (cdn)
I saw that 2011 Jaguar video back in the day! Well, maybe 2013 lol. I always assumed you owned it. Cool vid as usual MJR!
Nice pickup! Wish I could have stayed longer at the PRGE to see your panel.
It was a great panel. I'm going to try and upload the footage if I can find it
That telephone keypad would come very useful for old FPS games like Doom to swap weapons.
It is used exactly like that in Jag games. Doom and AvP used it to instantly switch weapons. MJ kinda screwed up by downplaying the keypad.
The older consoles had those keypads. The 2600 had keypad controllers and the Mattel Intellivision, Coleco Colecovision, and the Atari 5200 all had them built into their controllers. It was definitely useful with the overlays.
Oh my God! Cybermorph the AVGN had some choice words for that game. 😂
vigoroushero 88 “Ahhh! That voice!”
Back in the day all consoles had a pack-in game so you could start playing right out of the box. Cybermorph was that game and it looked and played like nothing I had ever seen before! I couldn’t stop until I beat it-good times!
Nice pick ups, the Atari Jaguar & CD are the next systems on my list to pick up. 🤟🏻
Love Dizzy. Played them all on the Sinclair zx spectrum +2 :) good times!

When explaining RF to young uns, you might need to explain what a crt is. 🤣
CRT hasn't been gone for long enough for young people to not know what they are. Explaining RF isn't dependent on CRT either.
@@bangerbangerbro That depends on what you consider young. If we think that young is 15 years old, then it's likely that he or she doesn't know what CRT is. I agree you on that RF thing.
DOOM deathmatch on the atari jaguar was amazing! You can connect to other tvs if you have 2 or more jaguars that is. It was the most fun EVER! We played 4 player deathmatch with 4 different jaguars and tvs! You should try it with your friends jaguar and hook it up!
Battlesphere could connect 16 Jaguars together for a total of 32 players. Granted, the legitimate game cartridge can run $500, the CatBox adapter can go for $500 each, and the ProControllers were going for $500 until the homebrew reproduction run happened two years ago. So crunch the monetary value of 16 Jaguars, 16 Battlesphere catridges, 16 Catboxes, and 32 ProControllers! Total insanity!
I have one. I bought it at a retro game convention in Las Vegas many years ago. I also got the CDROM expansion and development kit along with it. I love the Jaguar. My favorite games are Alien vs. Predator, Pitfall Mayan Adventure, and the CDROM games Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.
Cool video. I’ve never knew a yo that owned a Jaguar but I remember seeing in EGM magazine back in the day
Welcome to the club! Essentials for any Jaguar colletion: Doom, AvP, W3D, Iron Soldier and Rayman. Then Defender 2000 and some of the better 16 bit ports like Cannon Fodder. Edit: Two of the best games are on Jaguar CD: Battlemorph and Iron Sodier 2. I also like Hover Strike CD a bit. Homebrew projects include a new Doom edition with mucic and all the feats the original Jaguar version was missing. And it's right, the hardware is quite capable!
I always felt the design of the jaguar looked like a Predator.
Great video. Makes me want a Jaguar now haha
