We took in a street dog May 02, 2023. It was sick and lived for 8 months, in spite of that we had 7 months of joyous activity, it entertained us every day with a resilience that made our lives richer than before. We played games and slept together everyday.
G'day Nigel - Good to see you back, I subscribed in 2020 when I got my rescue Khan, a 6 y/o Pit bull terrier X. Unfortunately he hadn't been socialised at all as he was a working dog & your vids helped me to better understand him via observing his behavior and minimising triggers to reactivity - On walks I must be constantly alert for smaller dogs & cats as he gets very agitated and starts to whine and can't break eye contact/doesn't take treats - I've come to realise that his prey drive is very strong but thankfully he likes large dogs, The shelter told me he was an 'only dog' but I am very proud to say that through patience and close observation he is now great friends with an Irish Setter and a Wolfhound, the latter of which is arguably his girlfriend lol

Great to see you back! Your journey with Dante gave me hope in dark times with our beautiful Romanian rescue. The first year was SO hard. Family and friends said 'give him up', but because of his fear aggression and some bite history I didn't think he'd make it and I'm so, so glad we committed to him. We found a great behaviourist, and we're two years in and he's doing so well. Still lots to work on for him to have a freer life. He's much, much better with dogs but he's a big guy at 32 kilos, so the very difficult challenge is making those really short, safe interactions with dogs that get too close. I'm so looking forward to getting to know Sky!

I have wonderful 4 Greek rescue dogs, they do have issues from the past especially one who is still very scared of people. Very wise advice Nigel to take time to let the rescue dog decompress and to really get to know them and what any potential issues are for them.

Thank you so much. I have been so stressed, and depressed about with my new rescue. He is a 50 lb standard poodle mix. Unknow to me at the time, when I adopted him he was sedated. After I got him home he turned into a different dog, lunging ,to the point of pulling me over, jumping up on me, nipping and more. Your videos are his and mine life lines. They are therapy and knowledge. You are such an amazing instructor. I love the way you break it down and show the slow process. You give me so much hope.

Just be sure to get clear boundaries in the home and if all you do is go out for five minutes and your dog is listening to you. This was the best, the most honest advice video I've watched. It reduced my stress. Amanda has been on the streets and in various shelters for the last year. Ive been an experience d big dog rescuer with a home but this is my first tiny dog and I'm in an apartment. I feel at sea. But you reminded me I don't have to solve all of her problems this week. Just work at going slowly.and consistently. Let her decompress, for however long that takes, before the training begins.

I love this very much Nigel, all such important tips. As you know my Beau is a rescue. I re-homed him at 8 months old and he was so out of control and reactive initially. His mum was a street dog from Spain. He had lived in a home from 3 months to 8 months in Spain but they were first time dog owners and so perhaps didn't do the things he needed in those crucial early stages. So when my partner and I re-homed at 8 months, a very tricky time anyway being the teenage phase, he was still mouthing, counter surfing, begging for food, pacing nonstop, whining nonstop, barking at everything, jumping up and was reactive outside to everything. It was extremely challenging and I cried a lot and wasn't sure I could do it at times but I read your book, watched your videos, and looked at other positive trainer techniques. I learnt loads. I did all your tips in this video also. And a year on, wow, the changes in Beau are amazing. With him, after he had settled into his new home and country, I worked on calmness, impulse control and our relationship by using games and trick training and interactive play and making sure he had enough sleep. His reactivity has improved hugely. He is still unsure of new things: places, new things he experiences inside the home and outside and new people but this is improving as he trusts us to make decisions and keep him safe. I can't let him off lead still and I keep walks short, just so he can do his business and we exercise him through games in the home and garden and interactive tug etc. Amanda and Beau x

Thank u for the tips, this information will help us understand what our rescue dog is going through, we adopted a golden doodle he is less than 1 year old 60lbs. We noticed that noise from outside or the kids playing can startle him. He chews on everything, mouths us and the kids, and jumps up on people and tries to clean off the kitchen counter. We really were not prepared for Leo his personality is as big as him. We thought we had it all together we bought him a kennel, chew toys, and the food he was eating and his previous home. We have ordered calming treats, and mussel. We struggle to get Leo to interact with us one on one without him biting our mouthing us. He absolutely goes crazy when we try to walk him even 10 feet from our door. He starts pulling really hard or jumping at me trying to bite the leash and me. We can't distract him or calm him down. We feel defeated and it's frustrating to think that we might have to give him up. Leo has high energy and we were hoping to bring a dog into our lives again. Leo has an appointment to get fixed and we have been working with a trainer but no progress yet in 3 weeks.

Your video is so true we rescued a puppy from a rescue in Alabama she is so sweet but we got her home and the poor thing was afraid of everything. She wouldn’t to go through doorways we had to carry her to get her to go out side. Every new noise she would bark at the refrigerator,at the TV and anything she wasn’t familiar with. It takes time patience and lots of love but she is adjusting well. Your suggestions are so valuable I will be watching for more tips.

I just got a Toller Retriever from the SPCA. He is 1 year old. His behavior has me kind of baffled. For the most part, he seems shut down and just really depressed. Strangely though, he follows me absolutely everywhere and lays at my feet all the time. He'll also stand at my feet and just look at me with a strange neutral look. He closes his eyes when I pet him, so he doesn’t have issues receiving affection. But he doesn’t show me any affection. Tonight I bought him a bed for outside his crate and some balls and it was the first time I saw him wag his tail. We’re going into the second night. I only know he was rescued from a hoarding situation where he was in a crate a lot of the time. 100 cats on the site. Multiple other dogs.

I have 2 rescue dogs from Spain. It’s only been 9 months but boy what a ride ! One is everything reactive like Dante and the other very fearful . Wow. Your videos have just popped up in my KZhead feed! I've spent so much money on trainers and behaviourists over the last 2.5 years for my 25kg dog from Northern Macedonia but haven't been able to find approaches that reduce his reactivity significantly with other dogs! I took him on from a woman in my locality during the lockdown who rea5lised within days of getting him that he wasn't right for her and because he played with my older dog i said I'd take him if neccessary. Little did i know what i was taking on! Lol! He's slowly becoming less reactive and I'm now working through your videos and feeling confident trying to apply your techniques. No else seems to be addressing the kind of rescue dogs we have now. Thank you.

Thank you for your videos and your channel. I’m so happy that I stumbled across them! I have a rescue dog, he’s 11 months old and is a Staffordshire bullterrier cross with a Rhodesian Ridgeback. He’s a larger dog at around 30kg so far, and a little more growing to do. He’s a brindle, like Sky :). I’m so glad that you’re posting these vids about rescue dogs! Oliver is my 4th rescue dog, but my first puppy rescue dog, coming to me at 3 months old. I think that I’ve fallen more into the over affectionate parent, which has lead to him more recent behavioural issues and certainly hasn’t helped some of the pre-existing ones. When he first came into my life, he was a challenge. Being abandoned, not having any doggie ettique, has been a challenge. In our 1st month, especially the 1st few weeks, he almost went back a few times. But, I persevered. Once toilet training was sorted, our relationship certainly improved, and I’m so glad that I persevered. Recently I’ve noticed his behaviour changing - him almost pushing me out of the way to go first, and chewing my shoes (!) and other things when I was out. After watching (binge watching) many of your videos, I’ve realised what’s going on. I’ve put into practice some of the things that you’ve talked about and have noticed an improvement in behaviour already. Don’t worry, I will be reinforcing / repeating it daily :). I’m keen to display the good leader traits shown in your vids, and that has started tonight, and will continue tomorrow and onwards. (I was watching vids with dogs barking in them and Oliver came to in to see what was going on, and I put myself between him and the screen and reassured him. He’s sleeping peacefully in his bed now). He has such a wonderful temperament (not just his biased mother says so too :D) and I want him to keep it, and keep being the beautiful, loving, affectionate, playful thing that he is. Thank you again for the vids, appreciate them.

Hi from Norway, we have rescue dog from Croatia, he was found with brother and sister on the graveyard in a bag. Later he was in one room with brother and sister, and two other dogs. He was the smallest of the five. We rescued him when he was around four months old. Long story short and two and half years later with some of your videos he is much better. Still reactionary sometimes, but much, much better.

OMG, I have done everything wrong with my little [Princess] Mila from Macedonia. She arrived on 15 May 2021 and she has calmed down and definitely learned to trust me, BUT she is getting naughtier, particularly with recall. I put that down to her growing in confidence, but looks like I got that one wrong too. She is +- 6/7 years and (apparently) was rescued from a landfill. She arrived very timid in her new home (joining one old dog and one old cat) but very aggressive in public. Barking and lunging on the lead and absolutely crazy... She's calmed down a lot and seems quite devoted to me, but lately I've noticed that I am quite far down a very long list of interesting things - she gets two walks a day with the old boy (one along our country lane to whatever field doesn't have sheep in it), and the other in a public area with lots of other dogs. I think it's important for her to have some freedom and I also think she needs to socialise with other dogs. She's (sort of) fine with other dogs when she's off lead, but in her excitement races up to them barking like a mad thing, which doesn't always go down very well (either with the owner, or the dog - she's been told off by the latter a couple of times which seems to have made her a little more wary). Her recall when we're alone in a field has all but gone. I'm sure it's simply that rabbit holes, fox poo (which she rolls in), and small field creatures rustling in the hedges are of far more interest, but how do I bring her back? She does come back, eventually, but very much at her convenience. I have to go after her and bring her back on a lead. The other really dangerous thing she does is bolts at Really Interesting Things - this includes getting under a farm gate and running onto the road from a field when she sees someone (usually another dog), chasing bicycles, and running under a stile to chase sheep in the next door field. I've tried to give her freedom and she walks quite well on the lead now and has stopped lunging and barking as much but I still can't trust her to do what she needs to do. That said, she has come a long way from when she first arrived and I think that I am the problem.
Hi Lesley, Awareness is the first step. She needs to 100% of the time when you call her no matter what the distractions. To do this she needs to be on a lead in order for you to bring her back when she is not listening. Exercise is secondary to control. I watched your training videos with Dante, so beautiful to watch his progress. Your new pup, Skye is beautiful. I recently adopted a new 3 year old dog who is a poodle mix and is quite reactive. He has the potential to bite.I’m his 3rd owner. Hopefully I will be able to socialize him and calm him down around strangers. It makes it difficult to take him to a vet or groomer but there wasn’t anyone else willing to take him on. Looking forward to hearing more about Skye and any helpful advice you have on working with new dogs.

The advice to give the dog time to adjust is something I could have used with my last dog. He was an older, neglected dog who had been dumped on the street. He was a high energy breed and turned out to be very reactive. I'm sure i overexposed him socially - wish I had known better, I thought it would be helpful but now I think it was probably the opposite. I usually have good instincts with dogs but hadn't dealt with reactivity before. Thanks for your good advice.

He has made good friends with my sisters dog through a careful intro, so I know he can do it! I’ve read your book and I was inspired by your your journey with Dante and know he can improve but need to now make a concerted effort to get him carefully meeting good dogs regularly.

Really helpful video. We are 18 months into our journey with our 5 year old rescue dog from Cyprus via a failed adoption in Germany. He is a wonderful dog, but also quite reactive on lead and at the doorbell/passers by. We are working on these areas.

Very good advice, and it was practised when I got my English Setters apart from I did take them out for longer walks, and that made it take longer to get one settled in. A lot more patience was needed, and the two work well as they compliment each other. The dogs were from Northern Spain and were used as they were bread as Gundogs and they were adopted by me.

Nowadays my dog is reactive to other dogs in the street, but only when they're on a leash lol. I have difficult to do a controlled meet with other dogs and maybe this could be useful, as you said. Rescued a 6 year old mastiff bulldog mix. Big powerful girl. The key was taking it really slow and learning about body language. She really hates men and after a year she only trusts her daddy. It's strange because she's happy and giddy to approach men but she doesn't like being touched by them?? She's currently socialising with big dogs like her and with me becoming calmer she's made great friends but like most dogs she doesn't like being approached by bouncy off lead dogs that go in her face!! It CAN be stressful rescuing but it's so worth it. I've had to limit family visits from the men in my family just to keep her happy. She was with me through pregnancy and her issues gave me something to focus on, and she has been perfect with her new baby brother but this took preparation. I recommend consulting behaviourists, and if your dog needs socialising with other dogs then a trainer with other balanced dogs is essential to build confidence.
Hi Lou, she'll get there of you meet men before her and slow the interactions down. Her behaviour demonstrates internal conflict with the situation. Yes certainly can be stressful - i talk about that in an upcoming video. Keep up the great work.
I have a rescue dog He is reactive to small dogs. He is submissive to my 14 year old dog. But taking him on walks is a real challenge. I use a gentle leader and am able to control him that way. He loves greeting people and strangers and does not mind big dogs most of the time. But some dogs just seem to trigger him and he starts lunging. Think he is about 2 years old.
The introduction to dogs needs to be done slower. It's likely he wants to say hello but then finds himself in the deep-end as his confidence just isn't there yet. Tough challenge I am sure. He's lucky to have you.

Hi Nigel. I was happy to get the email that you are back. We are in year three with a rescue from Northern Manitoba, Canada. There is so much that is great about her, however the separation anxiety is getting worse. With gradual exposure we had her up to two hours alone but then she regresses and even 10 minutes leads to frantic barking and panicked behaviour. This cycle of working her up to successful time alone and the regression has repeated itself 3-4 times over the last 3 years. Most recently she had also pooped on the floor. Frustrated does not begin to explain how we feel. She’s ok alone and then she is not. Love her dearly but we are considering medication. The weird thing is she doesn’t follow us around the house, she sleeps in a different room, and we can go outside into the yard or hot tub:) without her caring at all. Drive away….and she loses it. We’ve watched a lot of videos but any additional advice would be welcome :)
Hi Sandra, Lovely to hear. To address the symptoms it sounds like she needs many lessons of the car starting and you coming back in again. To address the disease it is possible there are inconsistencies with your leadership language. We have to dot the i's and cross the t's to ensure the communication is as clear as possible.

What does "therapeutic" fostering tend to cost?
my rescue Bo is territorial of the neighborhood where I got him from. He seems to think it is HIS area and no other dogs should be in the area. goes nuts seeing other dogs and cats. 😢 what should I do...he is ok when he is offleash in dog hotels. so is it leash aggressive? he is half frenchie half pittie I am guessing.
Hi Alice, If a dog is aggressive on the lead but not off it still doesn't mane they are happy off lead - it can just mean they feel more vulnerable on the leash and so act aggressive. So I believe the term leash aggressive can be confusing. Whatever the situation you have to show your dog that you are his bodyguard, not the other way round. Have a rehomed boerboel, but very aggressive towards me and everyone. I can't put him on chain up till now , I keep feeding him from afar. Please I need help. Am from Nigeria
Sorry to hear that. It’s a very lengthy explanation I’m afraid. The note you ignore him and allow him to decompress the more his anxiety will disappear. No guests just get him used to you first.
