In Japan, rental services for a japanese girlfriend or japanese boyfriend have been around, but I recently noticed that you could rent a Japanese grandma for the the day and it got me interested.
Apparently, you can ask her to act like she’s your grandma and do stuff together, help out with house chores, attend family events, or simply ask for life advice, basically anything within reason. So in this video, I share my experience with you renting a Japanese grandmother for a day and the first thing I asked her to do was make me a traditional Japanese bento which later we’ll be taking to the park later for hanami to enjoy the Cherry Blossoms.

  • This is so awesome and heartwarming, I would love this! The only grandmother I had growing up wasn't very good and only favored her other daughter, my aunt and her son. The rest of the grandkids weren't important. I did "adopt" my own Grammy when I was a teenager and she was so much fun! Even when I was a kid, I've always preferred being around older adults than kids. At my old job I worked with a lot of older adults, as well as adults with disabilities. My favorite part of my job was visiting the different senior centers. I was often invited to their congregate meals and many had retired chefs in the kitchens. The conversations and the stories they shared were sometimes wild!

In my case, my grandmother died when I was very young so I don't really remember my interactions with her. I only remember her from photos. If I were in Japan right now, I would probably rent her service just to experience having a Japanese grandmother - someone who lived a different culture and era from me. On a macro perspective, this would be a great way for young people of Japan to personally know of grandma figure, who they normally may not have access to due to their circumstances. Thank you so much for sharing this day with us Paolo
