Is there an existential threat to democracy? Will America see a civil war in 2024?
From the potential consequences for individual countries to the global economy and political system, today's conversation is not just about asking hard questions, but finding a path forward in times of radicalization, misinformation, and geopolitical turbulence.
Ian Bremmer is a political scientist, author, and entrepreneur focused on global political risk. He is the founder and president of Eurasia Group, a political risk research and consulting firm, and GZERO Media, a digital media company covering global affairs.
In today’s thought-provoking episode, Ian and I go deep into geopolitics as he shares his insights on pressing global issues including:
- the geopolitical stakes of the US election
- what role AI plays in spreading misinformation
- impacts of lies and loss of credibility on governance
- the influence of economic disparity on cultural behaviors
- scenarios for Trump or Biden election victories
- fragmentation risks of NATO and the Ukrainian political system

Powerful Insights From Ian Bremmer:
“It's not that we're going to start blowing ourselves up. It's more that we aren't capable of having a free and fair election that the entire country believes in anymore."
"Globalization is absolutely great for the United States, but globalism sucks for the average American."
"The CDC has taken a massive hit of trust and has become politicized in the United States. And we need to be able to believe our doctors and our scientists, we need that."
“...In the last 40 years, church membership has fallen off a cliff in the United States. Belief in the church, trust in the church, has gone way down. Just like belief in Congress, the belief in the public school system…just like belief in the judiciary."

Can we somehow spark something constructive in a random internet comment, which can spill over to Canada, Europe, and USA? Actually. For my part, I start by acknowledging everything I think or interpret is not necessarily gospel. That my understanding evolves.

    • The party approach needs to go but not into a single party. What a deathblow to actual democracy that would be! Much better to approach as decentralized democracy -- make the ideas compete, not people, not parties -- use blockchain to verify the specific goals and policies being voted upon, administrate and support financially.

I can't believe he tried to pull the "Russia invaded for NO REASON" thing as well quite a few others I noticed..typical of someone who is part of that elite class..he has NO idea what it is like for those struggling...come on man..I think many people who are apolitical (which is many many people) should REALLY do a deep dive and try to figure out WHY people feel a certain way...and what you come out with might actually surprise and scare the shit out of you..and might change your beliefs. I think many people want to virtue signal and vote for Dems because they are the "politically correct" party..but in all reality that has not been the case for quite some time. The corruption is rampant and REAL change has to happen. Career politicians will not get the job done..they will just keep accumulating power and passing terrible legislation and letting the 3 letter agencies invade the privacy of the American people. The constitution is CLEAR on many key tenets that people haven't even learned correctly because the public education system is just an indoctrination camp. The wolves are leading the sheep into tyranny disguised as "security and safety" and the climate change agenda, scaring the living shit out of kids and young adults, confusing them by injecting gender ideology marxism into education. Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and other countries use social media apps like Facebook and KZhead, Instagram, etc. etc. to censor people all around the world. I love America but it’s not a country I recognize anymore and it’s getting worse and worse and even if it gets better for a couple years it’ll get worse again because it did that between 2001 and 2008 and it was starting to decline but got it was better under George Bush but then it got worse in 2008 and then Obama comes in and he was just godforsaken awful and I didn’t think his presidency was ever going to end and I knew I was supporting Trump because I knew he was going to be an excellent economical president and he was! The thing is that if Trump gets elected for four years once he’s out, it’ll go back to the same old same old establishment more than likely and Trump will be 82 and he’s not gonna be as active in the party and he’s not gonna be able to kick them in the butt and get them in line and they’ll go back to the same old same old so I’ve been looking around in areas and it’ll lead to move and it sounds bad, but I just have because I simply don’t trust the government with their spying in the Fascism here

You guessed it, Americans! (individual investors, the US Government itself, pensions, brokerage firms, banks, local governments, insurance companies, private equity). Who created the debt? Yup, Americans! (US Congress, State and local governments). Who consumes majority of the debt? Yup, Americans! (Mostly boomers through social security and military spending controlled by the same demographic). Who pays the debt and the interest? You were fuckin right again... Americans (living and yet to be born) who do not own a significant amount of any debt or asset (the bottom 80%). Americans are enslaving Americans.

    • @@jerrycoplen8658 he may be an "establishment" leftist but far from a real one. a real leftist and marxist engage in dialogue with maga types due to our understanding that these culture wars and ideological non-sense is what blinds us from the truth. which is the capitalist/owner/billionaire class use their wealth off the backs of workers, and then use that to influence the laws that govern us. and im sure even pro-capitalist right wingers agree with that, so starting from there, we can then discuss what to do about it. but democrats dont give a fuck about that because they are the billionaire class as well, so they act as if they are pro-black, lgbt, homeless, impoverished etc but their policies exacerbate issues which then lead to more polarization. for example, the border crisis is something that EVERYONE is waking up to because of the sheer incompetence and selfishness of our politicians. we have a limited pie and when migrants come in, they are taking a piece for themselves meanwhile the people in our home countries are getting maximally exploited by our employers AND state. when an unemployed homeless person car jacks a working class person, the working class person suffers(i've been a victim of it) and id rather educate that car jacker to earn a car than to have an environment in my country where people think thats okay and demonize them for it because objectively his material conditions are worse than mine and i can empathize.. heres a little statistic I find eye opening: The GDP Per American Worker is $143,750, which is what the Average worker in america produced. Meanwhile the Average salary is $74000, and the median being $50000. AND ON TOP OF THAT, WE ARE TAXED LOL. So the capitalist that own the business and run the state, TAX US AT PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN... workers need to rise up and be alpha.

    • So what he is referring to here is something that has shown up in surveys in the past few decades. What they show is a direct link between how voters feel about the economy is correlated to which party holds the White House. Also note, that people's views about the economy is different from what they feel about their own situation. For instance, right now most polls show that a lot of people worried about the economy are less worried about their own finances.

    • He is making a point more then saying red vs blue have different ideas at looking at the same thing. From an economic standpoint, America is doing very good right now, but the benefits go strait to the top 1%, the very same people driving this massive 25-26Trillion GDP economy. Normal people (in money terms) don't get the benefits of this progress. If we all could agree that focusing on prospects for children who haven't been born yet deserve more attention then those who are already in the suffering of today, we could work to a future where we align things like GDP output to citizen gain. As is, while capitalize is clearly better then the other current options, we do not have a way of safeguarding the less monetarly educated working class. They will just keep working till they die as they always have. It's high time society does it's side of the deal to progress humanity, or the weak will suffer what the must as the rich do as they please. The long and short of it is focus on making life for someone else's kids better, safer, more opportunity to spend our short lives how we choose. We are close but still have more suffering to do, and we won't see the benefit, it's a sick joke but it is reality. 😅

  • I love your work, Tom but when your guest started popping off about Canada and the Trucker's protest and how democracy has only slightly erroded in Canada - I'm sorry but he obviously knows very little or anything about what is actually going on in Canada! I was doing journalistic work and went to the Trucker's protest to see for myself what was actually going on - it was not what it has been made out to be by mainstream media and your guest! There are hundreds, if not thousands of hours of footage as to what was really going on down there. It wasn't "mostly peaceful" it was peaceful and the events that I witnessed while I was there were absolutely heartwarming! I wrote a book about the issues between Western Canada and Eastern Canada and the idea of separation. While I was in Ottawa, I saw Quebecer's and Western Canadians hugging and agreeing on issues that they have misunderstood each other on since the inception of this country! It wasn't a whites only episode either - there were people from all different ethnic and religious backgrounds - Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Indigenous, Blacks, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Europeans...you name it, they were all there. As for Rebel News - I've followed Ezra Levant for many years and have always said you have to take a handful of salt with his stories. It's not that he lies, it's just that he is extremely biased and exaggerated more like a tabloid than anything else. I have colleagues and friends who have worked for him, some love him some aren't so happy but ultimately, he covers things that a lot of media don't. I don't like the often "gottcha" style of Rebel News, but I appeciate their right to cover stories and object to them being harrassed, censored and bullied by other media outlets and our own government that is supposed to be encouraging the freedom of the press! On that note - Censorship in Canada is absolutely out of control! I have articles I wrote a couple of years ago that I put up on my FB feed back when I wrote them - because of Trudeau's censorship bills, they aren't visible on social media anymore - there's a graphic that comes up and says "this post is not available in Canada" - a Canadian reporter putting up content written by and for Canada and it's not available in Canada - riddle me that one and tell me again how democracy is still alive and well in Canada!? Back to the Trucker's protest - the Emergencies Act was used and now has been found illegal and unconstitutional and yet there will be no consequences for our government. People have sat in jail for two years, others have been dragged through the courts and still more have had their bank accounts frozen all for supporting a group of people who had enough of lockdowns and the insane and inconsistent rules/mandates being enforced against the people of Canada! That damage that was done has been far greater than what we lost - including the trust in our government and institutions! It is so obvious that your guest, though I assume highly educated and knowledgable on some things - outed himself as a biased and ill-informed spreader of misinformation himself. I'm afraid my first impression of him is not a good one. I realize that you try not to be biased yourself and try to learn from varying perspectives, and I would encourage you to listen to Viva Frei, a former Montreal, Canada litigator who has now moved to Florida because of everything that has gone on here in Canada. Another highly respected journalist is Rex Murphy. That is, of course, if you are at all interested in the death of democracy in such an open and pluraistic, liberal democracy like Canada once was. And I say that as someone who lived in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the troubles - I was a teenager and came to realize just how blessed I was to grow up in Canada. Sadly, that is currently not the case and I only hope that we can stop this degradation before any more harm is done. )Please note that I only touched the surface of what is going on here - there is more, much more and very frightening...and on your northern border.)

There were also people at the US Capitol that day, wanting to burn down the Capital and they were members of BLM and antifa, and there were also feds on the ground and we can tell by the videos because they’re bigger guys all dressed in black but they’re not Antifa or BLM because they’re too big and they had earpieces. The FBI Director was not being completely honest, and he just refused to answer the question when he was subpoenaed to come in to Congress, and he would just not answer the question about feds being on the ground that day. The capital police treated piece for people terribly and when people were walking along the grass they were shooting off tear gas and some other kind of chemical at them and started shooting plastic. Bluetooth these people and President Trump asked for 10,000 National Guard to be there January 2, January 3 fourth and fifth and speaker Pelosi denied every single request. !!!

When the top 1% of Americans hold nearly 50% of the country’s wealth and the bottom 90% hold less than 25%, or when nearly 70% of Americans don’t have $1000 to spend even in an emergency, bringing inflation back down to 2.5% is like giving a pancreatic cancer patient a bandaid. His current term ends in 2024, but the new amendments in 2020 will allow him to stay in office for another 16 years. ( 2040 ) 🤔 2021 in Canada 🇨🇦 The Prime Minister has been in power since 2015. If PM win elections , they can only serve 2 consecutive 4-year terms. In 2021 , #trudeau lost the majority government , yet changed some of the rules . Today, He is still in 2023-2024. 🤔 2024 in USA 🇺🇸 Do you actually believe there will be an election ? Ask yourself this 1 question ; If you had to choose only between Option 1 : Have a 2024 US elections, But start ww3. or Option 2 : no 2024 US elections, And no ww3. • I suggest voting for Trump in 2024. I’m not saying he’s the countries salvation, but I’m sure he will keep us out of war, and at least attempt to fix the border and other things. Immigration drives down the wages and drives up the cost of housing because the immigrants need a place to live to. This is simple supply and demand economics. You cannot argue with it. There are no countries with high rents and low wages that do not have massive amounts of immigration, they do not exist. There Hass to be a moratorium on immigration and tell Americans have living wages, and the ability to pay the rent. Not a dime for the Ukraine or Israel until you fix the problem in Hawaii and the problem with the homeless vets here I know it’s a pipe dream , but you have to push as hard as you can. We have homeless shelters all over the country and they keep expanding and you see them in new places all the time the corruption needs to end.
