  • Maybe many people don't know "city pop" is not only a music genre...it was the portrayal of an era through music. It represented the Japan of the 80s, the Japan that gracefully rode the wave of prosperity, a perfect breeding ground not only for thinking about the future...but even not needing to for because its present was already perfect. The Japan where young office workers had exorbitant salaries and young couples were able to buy big houses, a cosmopolitan bubble-life where young salarymen and male and female students had a bright future, where everyone wanted to live. "City pop" talked about the joy of life and nightlife, love, happiness, an endless paradise that had to be enjoyed very fast and very lively, before the decade finishes and 90s come...

    • While the 90s and early 2000s had iconic songs, there's definitely a switch in the quality of music, and that's mainly due to corporations trying to play it safe. If you think of any popular modern artist, nearly none of them actually write their own songs. Nowadays all modern songs sound pretty similar, to the point where it's hard to tell which artist even sang it. The 80s on the other hand bred creativity with its music, you had to stand out to make it on the radio. You could instantly tell which artist made which song from the unique style and voice.

  • So good. The sadness and melancholy in city pop is so vibrant and optimistic. It real lets you experience the night city life vibe of a whole era.

  • Am I the only one who feels like I'm flying among the stars when listening to city-pop? Maybe that's the purpose of this genre. To create a timeless soaring. The neon lights of the city, like the vibrancy of the Milky Way. Before and after our existence, perhaps our souls are there orbiting into infinity, and this music conveys that sense of life. That is why it has a good atmosphere.

    • I think the music is about the same. Compared to music today, it feels like 80's music is definitely more emotional and authentic, although a big part of that is the difference between momentary popularity and being recognized by later generations as great music. As for the anime aesthetic, I think it is very pretty and there are some shows that pull it off incredibly, but part of it is definitely nostalgia (plus putting it in an amv with this music is kind of cheating in terms of emotional appeal). While a lot of anime today doesn't have animation that gives it a lot of personality, there are still some incredibly animated shows that couldn't exist in the 80's such as Violet Evergarden, Land of the Lustrous, Fate S/N: UBW, and Demon Slayer (ig anything by Ufotable lol).
