CHARCOAL IS NOT CREATED EQUAL, B&B, Kingsford Hardwood and Ridge Hardwood.
Today I will review and compare 3 different charcoal briquets. Kingsford Hardwood, B&B Competition Oak and Ridge Hardwood by Royal Oak. The differences my surprise you. If you think all charcoal is the same, you need to watch this video before you waste your money or screw up a cook using the WRONG Charcoal.

I used B&B recently, and I was so impressed how long i was able to cook, getting away from Kingsford, and now B&B is my new charcoal. It also almost was 100 degrees hotter than kingsford.
Thanks for posting. I'm looking for another brand than Kingsford. Been very disappointed in it's performance. I was doing some chicken thighs the other day with Kingsford charcoal at 3/4 chimney level. I let it burn in the chimney for 20 minutes, spread it out in the pit and it got just over 400 degrees. Put 5 thighs on the grill and after 10 minutes the temp dropped under 100 degrees! I won't ever use them again. I've heard the quality has really gone down.
Try BnB. It’s all I use anymore. Burns long and clean. You’re also going to use a lot less.
Love B&B, Academy Sports also sells it. Thanks for the review!
B&B is good stuff. I can often reuse the charcoal for other cooks. Always impressed with how little I can get away with and still save some. Nice info and video. God Bless.
I am sticking to kingsford. I love the apple wood hardwood and original. Its consistent and available and I am used to it. The last 2 years kingsford has been very good with the bits of unburnt wood in the briquette its better.
I like Kingsford too. I always know what it will do. There's something to be said for a charcoal that's consistent bag after bag.
I’ve been using that B&B in my Masterbuilt portable smoker. It’s been perfect with the small fire box. Just the right combo of density for heat and extended burn.
Thanks for doing this comparison test. This helps!
I have used the royal oak Ridge coal for many years and find it works really well for me on my weber master touch. B&B isnt available here in Canada. I recent watched another channel that compared kingsford origional, the ridge and another and was interested to find that the kingsford is made with some toxic chemicals so I will stick with my Ridge coal.
Really good info! We have mostly used wood fires, but plan to get a dutch oven soon and try some charcoal. Nice and modular to take out to a park for a picnic. (and making videos) Outdoor cooking is always fun and you make it look good! Thanks!
Hey thanks for doing what you do. Very well done comparison. I like that vent fan up there too sweet!
Very interesting I've always used Kingsford but I'm going to try B&B.
B&B will be getting my business for those long cooks. Thank for this video! As someone just starting my offset smoking journey it is appreciated!
Look at how far along charcoal has come. Before competition q’ing it was always backyard with Kingsford soaked in their lighter fluid. Thankfully those days are a long lost memory. All the best to you and Mrs. Backwoods.
Your comment reminded me of a BBQ I was at ten years ago. This was when I was in Shanghai in 2012; I was at a work colleague's apartment. Now the apartment was on the first floor so they had backyard patio, this is super rare given how space was at such a premium. We were using some kind of locally made charcoal briquets. Those briquets were so horrible we were trying to light them with anything. Paper, nail polish remover and (one guy who was a dude from Texas that taught us how to really BBQ) used gasoline he siphoned from his scooter. Even using this stuff the damn briquets would not light. Eventually we ignited them by putting them over the stove burner and got a few briquets going. But damn....we had to let the briquets burn for 30 minutes just to make sure all the nail polish remover and gasoline was burnt off before we started cooking. Ah...good memories...
Nicely done very informative thanks for sharing
I cooked a turkey Saturday on a 22" Weber. I used B&B briquets and a little lump mixed in. Very consistent temp for 4 hours was easy to maintain. Really like the B&B for that. Thanks for your great videos !!
YT just suggested this video in my feed. Love all the cast iron in the background. Going to stick around and check out some other videos.
Nice comparisons. Good info to know.
Great test run 1st one I've ever seen that had equal briquettes
Great test. I've used B&B lump and pellets. Both are pretty darn good also. Looks like B&B is a pretty solid company/product.
Nice video. I use B&B for all of my long cooks.
Very interesting Scott! I would have liked to see a temp gun used and monitored temp as well ! Thanks
Check out Flying smoke's channel
Love your stuff it’s not easy but you provide great content thanks bunches 👍👍
Thanks for the info!!
I love B&B it’s all I use
Good test and I completely agree with your findings. Hard to go wrong with either Kingsford or B&B, my preferences as well. Fixing to light some Kingsford now for hotdogs 😊
Appreciate the information
Great video! I would have thought the Ridge would have performed better than the B&B, since Lowe's is more popular than are Ace Hardware stores! Thanks for sharing this side by side comparison, & saving me some heartache. Not much worse than lighting off the grill & having your coals NOT performing!
Great information to know. Thank you for the awesome video
Thanks good info
B&B seems to be the charcoal to use for a Dutch Oven . Very informative video
Great job with the side by side comparison! I have been struggling with the search for a long burn charcoal briquette. A quick google search shows the B&B in stock at my local Ace. Thanks again for putting this up!👍👍👍
B&B and Jealous devil are the best briquettes.
Good points
I only use BnB in my Oklahoma joe bronc barrel smoker. Burns a very long time, very clean smoke and tremendous flavor!!!
This video landed in my recommended feed and I intend to explore your channel a bit more. Good content here. My go-to charcoal is Sonora natural lump mesquite. Main reasons I like it: no waxy flavors and very easy cleanup on account of natural lump not having binders or moderators. I also like being able to add more lumps to the fire without having to pre-ignite or burn off anything. The trade-off is less consistent lump sizing so controlling the heat can take a little more attention. And the variation in lump size is considerable (lumber at top of bag, powder at bottom). For a dutch oven, it probably wouldn't make much difference but that little hint of mesquite on a simply-seasoned steak on a grill... hardly gets any better than that. (and it's subtle enough that adding other smoking woods will hide it)
I bought 3 bags of B&B last week because I saw guys on KZhead not getting a lot smoke while lighting, getting a long burn, and still being able to do a competition style steak cook. I used it once to smoke a butt and some ribs. Turned out great. When I tried to use it for direct grilling for steak and pork chop cooks, it seemed to burn up extremely fast when I used the whole chimney method. I had to back to the half lit and half unlit method to get a good cook. All 3 of my bags seemed almost like paper was coming out of the briquettes. I didn't really count the briquettes this time. I got by a fill spot on the chimney. I had a hard time getting mine to the point where the flames die and you just asked over briquettes. I want a semi long burn incase I don't want to rush to get the meat outside
Nothing beats good ole Kingsford. Burns hot, burns long, great flavor. Its also a better price.
Great information👍
Watching your video now as I'm using the B&B charcoal in my Pit Barrel Cooker for ribs for the big game. In the chimney now... I hope it works well for that.. Great video.
This is the best charcoal briquettes I've ever used
I’m just getting into charcoal grilling, and started off with B&B oak lump, love it, got 3 burns out of it, almost no ash, can’t believe how much ash briquettes produce! I’m staying with lump.
The new studio looks A+.👍🏻
Awesome review!!!!
Was the flavor and the charcoal smell equal ? Thank you for sharing
Very good comparison video. I usually use Kingsford Original for dutch oven cooking but B+B might be better for longer cook recipes. Thank you sir, this is why I watch your channel.
Do you have a video abt the chimney starters? I looked at your channel. Thanks for geat lessons!
I found it. Tks
Very helpful video... I'll have to check our local Ace for that B&B charcoal for sure. Do you do anything with Kamado style grills? I use cowboy hardwood lump for that but I'm curious if that B&B would work out good in there too.
Most Green Egg Dealers carry it also. That include all the Ace Hardware's around Florida.
Use B&B lump all the time will get me some briquettes usually use kingsford for briquettes. I certainly won’t be buying ridge. Interesting video.
hey new to your channel just got my first dutch oven like your recipe how do you get the season that you use
Link in the description of every video.
I prolly woulda compared based on weight instead of briquette count to make it fair. I used some ridge the other day for a smoke on the wsm and worked pretty well. Lasted way longer than any kingsford. I have a 22 and used a whole bag and 8 hours later it was still going strong. It probably still wouldnt compare to that b&b. I’ll probably see if i can get my hands on some of the bb...
Academy Sports carries B&B as well.
Very helpful. Unfortunately it appears as though Ace Hardware stores up in Western Massachusetts do not carry B&B 😩 I’ll have to keep looking though. Seems to be an excellent choice.
Lowe's
B&B and Royal Oak also make all natural briquettes. I'd like to see another test with the Kingsford , B&B, Royal Oak, and maybe some others like Jealous Devil and Cowboy all natural briquettes. This is a growing category as people try to get away from the chemicals added to regular briquettes but don't want to jump to lump charcoal.
I think ridge is prob rebranded Royal Oak. Just got some B&B. Looking forward to using it.
Mr Backwoods. How would you compare B&B to Stubbs. Especially for Dutch oven cooking. By the way, your outdoor kitchen is absolutely awesome
I’ve never used B&B (surprisingly not easy to find as Ace stores near me have it online only) and I’ve used a few different Kingsfords. Your review here is SPOT on. I bought Ridge last week bc I was in a pinch to finish a cook, and it was the WORST charcoal ever. Took forever to get lit same as yours did, and burned through super fast. Probably OK if you’re grilling hot & fast like burgers, dogs, or maybe wings. But low & slow? Forget it! Great vid!!
Using your briquet count method what's the count comparison (the amount of starts you get from a bag), the bags are sold by weight I would like to also see an equal weight compassion per start. I did like the idea of the comparison just needed to be done by weight.
When cooking I am starting to use more recipes by weight, so I am also curious about charcoal by weight
I've used all 3 plenty, hands down the best between the 3 in my experience is B&B. they simply burn hotter and longer. they don't smoke as much as kingsford
I use nothing but B&B. It’s hotter, cleaner, and more consistent.
I use Royal Oak
B&B and Jealous Devil Briquettes are the best period. They are about the same size too. The biggest issue is finding it - especially Jealous Devil. Blues Hog is slightly better than Kingsford and works well too.
This is the second comparison video I've seen where the B&B won over all. The last video was against Kingsford original and the B&B blew it away
Have you tried b&b briquettes vs their log version? I haven’t found any video where which is better.
I love B&B! It's my go to briquette.
Really good comparison! I just bought the ridge at Lowes to save a dollar and after seeing this, makes me sad. I'm a Kingsford guy and I knew better to buy it, but as a guy, lets save if we can, LOL. I haven't tried it yet but doesn't look like I'll use it for a cook, probably a starter for my fire pit.😂
I switched to Royal Oak because Kibgford burns out too quick.. The Royal Oak keeps burning even when the vents are closed in my Weber. Next day, fee small lumps are left.
Good to know....BUT...you can't beat the Kingsford 2x20lb (regular) for $19.99. 40lbs for $20 at HD or Lowes.
Agree 💯
Best Choice and IGA store brands are Ridge and have Ridge in small print on the packages.
Which is made by Royal Oak
@@sevanski1135 good to know, thanx. I cook with wood and use charley coals to extend my heat when smoke is no longer needed.
Kingsford is the most predictable, always lights fast, and gets ready to cook / grill in no time. However, this test is invalid...as the same amount of coals were not used. The volume of briquettes should have been measured by weight, not by count. Huge difference. With regards to Royal Oak, these briquettes have performed nicely for us.
I did this comparison to demonstrate the "coal counting method" widely used in dutch oven cooking does not always work. This clearly shows folks that the method is flawed and depends on the charcoal that is used along with a lot of environmental factors.
How well did Cabala adjust to her new digs?
She is still at the old house with Mrs. Backwoods. Hopefully they both will be here soon and the puppy bombs will return.
Curious what would happen if you did them all by weight?
Since some of them are broken or not perfectly shaped, I think maybe there are fewer additives or binders.
I use B&B charcoal and the hardwood lump. I'm really impressed with both. I might try the kingsford like you used but i have very bad luck with Kingsford original so much I wrote them and expressed my disappointment. They are not like they used to be. My second choice has been Royal Oak natural.
Ridge and other store brands are made by Royal oak. One time I tried Walmart brand charcoal which is identical to the ridge you tested. And it was terrible. Not much heat and it crumbled away really fast. Kingsford and b&b are both way better. I also recently tried cowboy hardwood briquettes and they seemed decent enough, I think anything is better than royal oak.
Why are you shopping at Walmart all there products are made by children In China
Have you ever used natural charcoal not the briquettes but they come in different shapes of pieces of wood are they usually sell some of that next to the bobcats if you ever tried cooking with that to see the difference between that and using the like the king for his briquettes just wondering?
I will be doing some lump charcoal test soon,
I just bought a bag of cheap, no name, briquets. Wish I hadn't, took almost an hour to get them hot. Very frustrating.
BG you don’t miss a beat yo got 2 new charole starters
Just for you.
This charcoal edible for health products?
I can’t find B&B here 🇨🇦 . I’m stuck using Kingsford but prefer it over Royal Oak.
Try the Weber briquettes. Been using it for awhile. Next best thing to B&B. A little bit smaller but the density is way more than the Kingsford. It also burns longer and for shorter cooks you can reuse them. Royal oak briquettes just crumble as they burn. They don't last long. I only purchase them on sale and they are only used for quick cooks like burgers, hot dogs, and sometimes steaks.
7:00 I'm shocked the RIDGE lit.
I love your videos...
I only use B &B for long cooks. Kingsford for hot and fast. Ridge is ok but a lot more smoke and ash compared to the others..
Yum
I've always know there was a difference in quality of charcoal but seeing it side by side was great. I'm going to find some B&B. Thanks for a great review and a great channel.
Looks like B&B is the way to go if you can find it the Ridge charcoal looks like same charcoal that homedepot sales and it don't last long B&B is about $17 a bag and it worth it.
I didn't need to see a test, I quit buying KBB long ago, they have changed their recipe. It's pretty much garbage now. And since HD and Lowe's don't put it on sale anymore during the holidays, it's not worth buying at full price, IMO. B&B briquettes are all I use. Have been using their Oak Lump for a couple of years and love that as well.
B&B...for the win...also their competition logs...little smoke
I like Cowboys Real Lump charcoal. Burns hot and for a long time
I think I know you answer, but what do you think of match light?
I never use any match lite charcoal for cooking.
Yeah match light is drenched in lighter fluid... nasty stuff IMHO
The BB to s about 14$ at Ace
Yah..... I'v stop using Ridge(brought to you by Royal Oak)....their to small and 💩. B&B is my go to mostly.......BUT check out Jealous Devil Briquettes.......holy 💩...... their 2-1/2 times the size of B&B and they burn HOT and LONG.....🤯
Maybe by weight would be better. Also, what's up with the dingleberry on the B and B at 3:45. Looks like plastic. This isn't the first time I've heard of plastic in B and B charcoal...
I’ve been using B & B exclusively for two years now. Great stuff. Never looked back. I keep a metal can with a lid that I put my partially used briquettes into if I just need a shorter cook time. . It puts them out and I reuse them for the next quick cook. That makes it even more economical when you don’t need a long cook. Twice the use same bag. 😉
I mostly use lump charcoal in my BGE; Big Green Lump, Royal Oak, and Kingsford Hardwood. Kingsford burns way to fast and the Big Green Egg is small pieces for what you would call lump. And extremely expensive, Royal Oak Lump is my choice. Good video. Thanks
Ok
I recently used B and B Natural lump charcoal, pro series... and it was garbage. first it took ages to light even an a chimney starter with fire starters... then it would die so ended up having to use disgusting lighter fluid to get it to stay lit and burnt...finally when I used the charcoal it dies within 30-40 minutes and smokes a ton if you don't have plenty of air flow...I so confused as to how it gets rave reviews, B and B turned out to be the worst charcoal I ever bbq'd with.
I've never seen B and B. Even at my ACE.
You can feel the disappointment with the ridge
Looks like you would start with equal weights not count
I agree with this
All I've ever used was Kingsford. Turns out it's the Chevy Chevet of charcoal. It ain't great, but it will get you there eventually.
Actually since commercial charcoal was invented by the Ford Co as a way to use all the wood scraps, it would be a Ford Escort.
@@BackwoodsGourmetChannel Okay, I still don't like Chevrolet.
I think b&b makes the best brands
I bought Ridge Charcoal because of the price at Lowe's. I could pour a half gallon of charcoal lighter, and still wouldn't catch. I'll never buy it again.
Quantity is not the key it's the weight equal amounts of weighted briquettes
