Joe Frazier beat George Chuvalo by TKO at 0:16 in round 4 of 10
Date: 1967-07-19
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
Referee: Johnny Colan
Judge: Tony Castellano
Judge: Artie Aidala
Frazier was an 11 to 5 betting favorite.
Frazier opened a cut under Chuvalo's right eye. Mark Kram of Sports Illustrated reported: "The cut was shaped like a scimitar and it went to the bone (later it was discovered that the bone was broken, requiring surgery), and the eye, seemingly ready to burst, was just a slit. There was another cut on the outside of his left eye, and a gash on the top of his scalp."
Mark Kram further reported: "The fight was supposed to be a war, but it never had time to develop. By the second round, Chuvalo's face was smeared with blood as hook after hook banged into the right side of his rocklike head. Between the second and third rounds, the face turned purple. The third was Chuvalo's best round, but still he did not win it. ... Chuvalo's right eye was closed when he came out for the fourth and, as he said later, he was dizzy. Two heavy hooks by Frazier ended the fight after 16 seconds, Chuvalo turning his back on Frazier and groping for his corner. A blood vessel leading to his eyelid had erupted. 'I thought my eyeball had been knocked out.' said Chuvalo."
Chuvalo later said his right eye was injured when he fought Archie Ray on June 22, 1967. Chuvalo said Ray's head accidentally collided into his cheek bone. "My eye was swelling up, and I went back into the gym and started sparring too soon, and my eye kept blowing up in the gym," Chuvalo explained. "So when I fought Joe, I was damaged goods."

Met Joe in the late 80s and he was a real gentleman He even took a photo with me and signed an autograph Also seen a number of interviews with George chuvalo and he seems like a real good guy He suffered a ton of hardships in his personal life but he has a very positive attitude
Two great warriors from the golden era of boxing.Chuvalo lost but not disgraced.
Joe won a gold medal in the Olympics in 1964. Joe earned it . Nothing was given to frazier. Old school. So was chuvalo. Much respect.
Could've had this one in a phone booth, for those of us old enough to remember what that was.
Two fighters that did not take backwards steps.
This is a prime example of why Smoking Joe was the greatest pressure fighter and body puncher in heavyweight history. Frazier had faster hands/feet and was 20 pounds heavier than Marciano, he fought far better competition than Dempsey, and he had better stamina, he was busier, and he was much tougher/bigger heart than Tyson. IMO, there is little chance that Marciano, Dempsey, and/or Tyson could have duplicated Frazier's incredible performance against Ali in their 1st fight. Frazier literally gave his heart and soul in that fight, and he was never the same again. The Frazier who fought Daniels, Stander, and Foreman was a shell of the fighter who steamrolled Chuvalo, Mathis, Quarry, Ramos, Foster, and Ellis.
This fight looked pretty competitive until That shot that broke Chuvalos eye socket ..he wasn’t going to go down but his eye was falling out
@@bobbyhulll8737 It was competitive in the sense that Chuvalo mixed with Frazier on the inside, but Frazier slipped/ducked most of Chuvalo's wide hooks and he landed a majority of the effective punches.
@@pjtheory yes it was competitive .. Chuvalo wasn’t going to go anywhere until his previously injured eye blew up .. I’m sure this would have gone into the later rounds . My point was that Chuvalo wasn’t getting destroyed the rounds looked close to me .. pretty much what you would expect . Not many realize Chuvalo had a good knockout record if he caught Frazier things could have easily changed . It’s too bad it would have been a great fight If George didn’t have bad luck he’d have no luck at all I think George won round 1 the other 2 were close but Frazier was quicker
Fraser was not the same as with Daniels, Stander and Foreman because he allowed his conditioning and endurance to waver. He started to be heavier which affected his overall speed. If you want to see what would’ve happened to Foreman of he faces a real Fraser at his prime, look at his fight with Manuel Ramos
@@clevelandwilliams5922 The 15 round war with Ali coupled with spending 2 weeks in the hospital were the main reasons why he could never fully regain his former conditioning and skill set. For the remainder of his career, Frazier was 10-12 pounds heavier than he was for his 1st fight with Ali, and he only used his right hand on a sporadic basis. I agree that the Frazier who defeated the 245 pound Buster Mathis, and big heavyweights such as Ramos, Chuvalo, and Bonavena would have defeated a prime Foreman. Heck, if Ron Lyle could knock Foreman all over the ring, imagine what a prime Joe Frazier would do to him.
George's orbital bone was damaged by a head butt in his previous fight and the orbital bone was cracked further in this fight. He needed surgery after this fight to correct the damage.
Well George Chuvalo last fight before Fraser was on June 22 1967 against Archie Ray. Smoking Joe Fraser fight was sanctioned July 19 1967. That’s less than a month. He did not allow his Bruises to heal well enough. A month is not enough time between fights. But he was a warrior
@@clevelandwilliams5922 he didn’t realize it was broken previously
Frazier would have beaten him anyway
@@tino6846 probably. But it could have been a very long night .. Frazier was rocked too and George was a piece of granite .. Frazier was quicker
That explains it...George didn't seem to be himself right from the start.
Chuvalo was so tough. He had such courage and stamina. But he was made to order for Joe. Just stood in front of him and tried to slug it out. Frazier's defense was too good, his hand speed was superior and he hit harder.
I would see Chuvalo over the years in my neighborhood in west Toronto. A very nice guy who would talk to everybody who approached him ! My father knew George’s father because they were both in the Croatian community. My dad said George’s father was the strongest guy he ever knew ! He would always win the bolder stone throwing competition at the picnic events !
George was a underrated boxer ! He had personal issues with family
Man, what a toe-to-toe slugfest! Chuvalo's eye injury cut short a really great fight!
Neither guy was a graceful fighter. Two sluggers
No that was a knock out
Chuvalo would’ve stayed with him all night, if not for the eye injury. He still would’ve lost. But Joe could’ve hit him with the kitchen sink and I think he would have just stood there trading shots. Round after round.
Great fight. Chuvalo was a brave fighter but orbital injuries are more serious than even a broken jaw. Fights have to be stopped immediately when they occur.Frazier had real snap in his punches and I feel that was the difference in this fight. George’s punches are heavy and damage over time Joe’s punch had a a snap like a sling shot. Two amazing warriors! Great accompanying music. Thanks for posting
I'd say this is smokin Joe's best showcase of defense. Head movement was on point. Slipping punches all day. Calmly dismantled Chuvalo on the inside.
Did George chuvalo lack punching power
@@tanikaharrell7639 had a pretty decent KO percentage. Best KO was probably Jerry Quarry. It was Chuvalo's supernatural chin is what made fighting him hard.
@gedel Njie only two dudes were able to knock Smokin Joe out. One, he wasn't even KOed, his corner stopped the fight. The other KOs were from George Foreman, one of the heaviest hitters the sport has ever seen. Joe could take a shot
@@tanikaharrell7639 I think George Chuvalo had decent punching power but in my opinion he focused a little bit too much on landing to the body; which is a great strategy to slow down a faster opponent. But at some point landing a few solid head shots could lead to a knockout. Frazier had good head movement but I think at one point Chuvalo landed a hard shot to the head and staggered Frazier.
Two gentlemen boxing; both truly nice guys. Frazier was younger, quicker, hit harder and had a better defense. What more can you say? Chuvalo was tough but lacked great power but had good endurance. I met Chuvalo in Akron after the Wipperman fight and all I can say is he treated me like a son or brother as we talked for a long time.
Smokin’ Joe Frazier is my favourite fighter ever so far. Along with Chuvalo and Ali.
Frazier,Chuvalo and Patterson
@@keithkimmeysr953 one year ago never heard of Rube
@@THEDONSTR8Fightah76 gotcha bro
Cant stand Ali tho he was extremely talented didnt like the person like Norton too
@@keithkimmeysr953 word up,
THIS JOE WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE JOE WHO FOUGHT ALI, FOREMAN. INCREDIBLE HEAD MOVEMENT. HE EVEN THREW JABS, RIGHT HANDS!🥊🥊🥊
Joe was an Olympic champion, don't forget!😊
@NOYB MAXX Joe was easy to hit with a body shot, as he always came forward. Best place to hit Joe and bring him down was to aim uppercut at his upper chest as Joe was often bending down forward bringing down his chin. Joe could never win toe to toe against heavy puncher like Foreman with his normal style of boxing, he employed wrong tactics in both his fights, he should have let foreman chase him making his punches less potent, then counter attacked with his devastating left hook. Too late now,
“This Joe was so much better than the Joe that for Ali and Foreman” are you insane? Joe Frazier fought 37 fights in his entire career. He was 17-0 when he beat Chuvalo. He was 24-0 when he beat Ali after almost a 4 year absence. Come on, be sensible. Everyone beat Chuvalo, Bonavena, Quarry, Jimmy Ellis. But face it, he didnt beat the big ones. Foreman of 1973 would have killed the Frazier of 1965. It was just no contest. Joe had one style. Ali adjusted. Joe kept coming forward and that is a style that is destined to be crushed someone like George foreman.
@@timothyduzenski1386 agreed Styles make fights and Frazier said it himself that George was just too big and strong for Frazier to handle him
@@daveoliver5838 Great comment, Dave. You should have been in Frazier's corner the nights he fought Foreman.
Great toe to toe fight, credit to Mr. Frazier for winning the fight, but also credit to Mr. Chuvalo for not going down.
Never did
Excellent quality upload, thank you 😊
You welcome
Two of the best could u imagine catching one of them hooks from either one.
Bro, Chuvalo was tagging and backing up Frazier. He put up a better fight than most other Ali and Foreman. He just couldn’t hurt Frazier. If he had Foreman’s power it would’ve been over. Shows you how strong Foreman was.
If only the fighters, who were " brawlers" knew to employ the " uppercut" when Frazier buried his head on their chests to give himself better angles to punch while in-fighting; it would have paid big results.
They were afraid to throw the uppercut because Frasier was laying the left hook
Joe would hit you with anything it was hard to set him up
George Foreman used the uppercut very effectively against Smokin' Joe.
@@jp3923 George was a different animal and he threw Frasier off with that stiff Jab
@@jp3923 Frazier was made 4 George Foreman
Great, man! Great original video. I like how you put it together.
Glad you enjoyed it
BOXING LEGENDS I am very amazed by the quality of your video. 👍🏼
Thx bro 🥊
this is the clearest upload i've seen of this fight....good stuff...thanks...this was the fight that made me realize frazier was a force to be dealt with.
Frivolous title to this. Chuvalo, Frazier, and Ali all fought each other. 'Georgie Boy' was never knocked off his feet in his entire career.
Thanks for the video, BOXING LEGENDS
Our pleasure! :)
What's amazing with Smokin' Joe is, that pretty much his only punch was a left hook. So you know what kind of punch to avoid before the start of the fight. And you still end up flattened...
Always bothered me that Nancy Durham and Eddie Futch never made Joe use his right hand more. He would have been much better.
@@therealc.t.7085 it might have been a matter of what Joe felt comfortable doin the ring. Kind of how Ali wasn’t comfortable throwing body punches. In boxing it’s not always what looks right on paper. Joe’s left hook took him all the way to the top
Joe was a diamond pressure fighter….chuvalo was a very good fighter too but joe was relentless ..in fact he was Smokin……
Looked pretty even ,too bad George was unable to continue due to his eye injury.
Look how much bigger Joe Louis is hovering over Frazier & Chavalo. Makes me laugh when ppl say old fighters wouldn't stand a chance today. Even heavyweights were shredded back then.
Wasn't Chuvalo the only boxer that fought Ali, Frazier and Foreman?
And Floyd Patterson. I read his book a few years ago, definitely worth checking out.
@@aguyfromwpg When did Floyd fight George or Joe? He fought Ali twice. He never fought the other 2.
@@drobson8004 George Chuvalo fought floyd Patterson Feb 1 1965, George foreman August 4 1970, muhammad ali March 29 1966 and May 1 1972
@@aguyfromwpg I though you meant Patterson fought Frazier and Foreman. That was outlined in my first point. Sorry for the confusion.
I think Chuvalo shook Frazier a bit around 2:02 and around 2:18. Frazier seemed to back up shortly after a hard left at 2:02. Close, but I would give round 1 to Chuvalo.
Sad to see Chuvalo's wife knowing she would later commit suicide days after the overdose death of a son, the second of three Chuvalo boys lost to drugs.
George was backing him up.
Chuvalo is the prime example of why it’s important to have good coming up and development and good management. Look at everybody he had been in with. Fight of the year with Patterson 65, 66 Clay. If he had have been that much more supported and cultured. He could have held the belt for some time for sure!
Should've had a belt after beating Terrell
@@Bruins-vq5ey That's true - I think that big George Chuvalo was definitely robbed in the Terrell fight. All in all Chuvalo had a great career and proved himself to be a very tough opponent against all the great heavyweight champions that he fought in his career. Unfortunately he was a lot tougher than he was skilled. Maybe he would have had a better career if he could have worked with one of the great American trainers like Cus D'Amato or Angelo Dundee.
Joe is a real fighter
23 year old Joe Frazier time really flies.. A bygone era even if you were in your 20s at this time you’re in you’re late 70s and eighties today just think how many ppl that were alive in 1967 which would be billions across the world at the time are mostly dead in 2023.. Appreciate life it goes by fast
I would have liked to have seen a Henry Cooper-George Chuvalo fight
I heard Henry ducked chuvalo
they came right at each other from the git-go. If Chuvalo hadn-t had a previous eye injury I don't think Joe would have broken his orbital bone.
Always thought Chuvalo was a better defensive fighter than given credit for. He even said "no one is tough enough to take a series of flush shots and stay upright" This was a good battle. You can see why George was a serious fringe contender. Frazier was quicker and had more power, but the differences were less overwhelming than some might think
George did mention that Joe Frazier could "crack" pretty good..no kidding. A cracked eye socket.
One thing I want to say about George shavano Joe Frazier did not have to run him down to catch him because he went toe-to-toe with smokin Joe Frazier
Great fight, two extremely tough guys! Video was ruined by the music replacing the call of the fight
Por dios como se dan, el daño recibido por ambos en esta pelea es impresionante, con razón tuvieron carreras más cortas.
That was an accomplishment to beat that human city/supertanker. Chuvalo was a big brother
George Chuvalo was never KO'd in his career.....That say's something
Frazier broke his orbital bone possibly already damaged but no chance after that lucky he didn’t go blind permanently fight looks fairly even
?
@@philfrank9226 ?? Not sure what that means
Chuvalo was only stopped by Foreman, who was getting tired from punching himself out, because the ref made a very premature stoppage. Chuvalo had to quit against Frazier because his eye was dislocated and he couldn't see out of it. Chuvalo never went down in these fights or any other of his 93 pro bouts, including two fights with Ali which went the distance. He had a 69% knockout ratio in the pros, and won all 16 of his amateur bouts by K.O.. I can't think of many boxers who fought legends like he did, who were never knocked down.
Chuvalo may have been seriously hurt in that fight. He was getting battered and was indeed on the verge of going down. Chuvalo’s corner basically threw in the towel. Whenever folks get a result they hate it’s always excuses and woulda’s, coulda’s, shoulda’s.
I think the only other heavyweight who went far without being knocked out recently was James Toney, and he fought Evander Holyfield.
TF with the music.
Liked the way George:s wife shoved the trainer, then gave him the evil eye.
Really classic videos..l ❤️ Boxing 🇮🇳🏅
MAANNNN! As Many Left Hooks Chuvalo Took On The Right Side Of His Head, It's A Wonder That He Didn't Leave The Ring That Night With Two Heads! L😂L But Nonetheless A Helluva WARRIOR!! SALUTE TO CHUVALO 🥊
No head movement
The difference between a good fighter and an excellent fighter is massive . George Chuvalo was a good fighter .
Joe’s head movement was the difference here, Chuvalo couldn’t hit him.
I am sorry, but why must we have music with an old fight film?
The fight has't any sound
Smokin' Joe used his right a lot more in this fight (and in others) than he did w/Ali, which I don't understand because he was landing almost every time he threw a right hand at Ali!
why the music!!????
Great fight between two of the sports toughest from the HW 'golden era' but contrary to the 'words' of the announcer (was this part dubbed for some reason?) this was not a world championship fight. Frazier did not win the vacant title against Ellis until 1969. Nevertheless, Chuvalo did previously challenge Ali (1966) and Terrell (1965) for the title.
Hard a nails Chuvalo. Never put down !
Why is their music ????
Background Music terrible
Stander staggered him with the left hook that wouldn't bother them before you got to remember the hospital for a couple of weeks after the fight with Ali he was just never the same to me a great champion a champions, champion what incredible heart and desire and drive a lot of people realize now that Frazier wasn't a slugger but a scientific boxer it shows here in this fight with Chuvalo is bobbing and weaving is a great science in itself you don't see that a lot today maybe somebody athletes were better today but I believe they were more skillful back in Frazier's time
According to George Chuvalo's son,George is now showing the signs of CTE.
Natural problems from aging...not boxing related
Chuvalo is game and is trading but Joe is quicker with more movement and his punches are more accurate
Joe Frazier was billed at 5-11 and 1/2, Chuvalo at 6 feet even...someone was fibbin.
Had the ref not stopped it when George turned away,I suspect he might have hit the canvas in this one.
I think the same when he fought Foreman too. Chuvalo could take a lot of punishment, but if he continued to get bludgeoned by Frazier or Foreman, he would have definitely went down. Either that, or he would sustain potentially life threatening injuries.
From what I heard, The fight was stopped because Chavalo eye was partially knocked out of the eye socket . The eyeball is connected by nerve endings, tendons and ligaments so its not as if the eyeball flys out and is detached from the brain and skull. Although that sort of injury could and can happen in car accidents and the like, but not in this fight . But it was a serious injury Chavalo suffered . He was lucky to have a fine eye surgeon. thankfully Chuvalo recovered full sight in that eye
Who was that Lady that ran into the Ring and up to Chuvalo, his Mother or his Wife ???
Both.
Notice that she pushes Ungerman
Chuvalo use to do a pretty good imitation of Ali too 😂
False introduction this was not for the heavyweight championship.
George was a very tuff man
Chuvalo could take a sledge hammer punch and he had no defense. Not a good combo - that he and Jerry Quarry suffered from during the era of legends. George's brain slid down the rabbit hole, while Jerry's became the hole itself.
George was fine you have no clue
@@Bruins-vq5ey You're right; totally clueless. Not all people that boxed were brain dead afterward and to the contrary, George was totally coherent and clear-minded well into his 80s. Attitudes like that are jibberish from casual (or less) fans who have no idea what they're talking about.
George has the power
Folks always got woulda's, coulda's, and shoulda's as if those excuses have ever won anything.
This would have been a tremendous opportunity to see a great fight, but the freaking music ruins it. It's a pity there's no way to watch it without the music.
There’s another version with no sound at all .. no audio
Chuvalo got a bad cut and decided to quit. It was a shame, as Chuvalo was holding his own in an inside battle.
I always felt, at the first Ali Frazier fight Frazier was done he took too bad a beating, he just wasn't the same I remember his first fight after the first Ali- Frazier fight for one Ron Stander
I don't think he took too bad a beating I think he overworked himself You can't keep moving and punching yourself out like that. Man lost 20 pounds of body weight that night
Was the lame background music absolutely necessary?
That was a knock out
Jure Cuvalo!
There's a huge weight difference here
Wrong
Liston would have walked all over Frazier like Foreman did!

10:22 strange, George stopped fighting, was he under orders ?
........JOE FRAZIER A CHAMP!....
If George had speed he'd stayed champ for 10 years...
arms too short, kept missing Joes head should have gone for upper chest instead
This what happens to boxers with kno head movement a easy fight for Joe LOL
Chuvalo 93 fights never hit the mat!
Kissed a lot of girls but never kissed the canvas, as George would say.
George just to easy to hit, and willing to take pounding. I think this is the fight that Joe, knocked George’s eye out of his head. Really ugly , disgusting. That’s the way they liked their fights back then,,punishing. My Uncle went to this fight, said it was great. I prefer some defensive skills.
Smokin Joe was too much for tough Chuvalo Chuvalo was too easy to hit
Even joe frazer failed to knock down chuvalo.....chuvalo is toughest......
The problem with the whole, "Chuvalo never got knocked down" stuff is that Foreman hit him with a left hook and he was 100% on his way down. The ropes kept him up. This takes nothing away from Chuvalo but there's a reason his team threw in the towel in the 3rd against Big George. He was getting knocked out. Cheers
Joe out boxed dude blind man can see this bunches to the head did damage
I wish you wouldn’t have put music to this video. It’s very annoying
Unfortunately originally video wasn't have a sound ... that is a reason why we put music
I just thought about it later you’re right about putting the music to it when there’s no sound sorry about that
Thank you for watching stay tuned
That fcking unnecessary background music.
Man chuvalo had heart but he so damn sloppy.
chuvalo never knocked down by frazier of foreman but stopped in three rounds? Frazier knocked down 6 x;s and did not last 3 rounds vs foreman?
