  • A lot of people are (for a good reason) asking why I don't use a lens hood in this video, and I am sorry I forgot to talk about it in the heat of the moment. I usually do use a lens hood, if there is either no wind, or it comes from the side or behind. However, in this example, the wind/rain came directly towards me, and then a lens hood is of no help. On top of that, if you "swipe and shoot" a lens hood doesn't really matter anyway and can be in the way. It is all about figuring what works the best in the given situation. I hope this clarifies ;)

  • I could have used this video a few weeks back when I was in Iceland for 4 days and it rained for 3.5 of those days! 😆My camera was fine but I was not prepared for the rain ... no waterproof clothes and no umbrella meant I spent more time in my car than out photographing. But at least now I know what I will need next year when we return to Iceland in November! Your Iceland map was a perfect purchase for me thank you so much for putting it out there. And now I'm enrolled in your Photoshop class trying to revive a few of the terrible photos I did take! 😊

  • Hey Mads. Very useful vid and great final image. Without knowing it, I essentially followed all your tips during my first visit to Iceland in October, where I had 10 days of consistent rain, sleet, and (of course) waterfall spray!! My Fuji is not weather-resistant, but the lenses I used are, which I think helped. I found that LR/PS did a much better-than-expected job in removing the effects of unavoidable water spots on the front of my lens.

  • The time blend was a great photo Mads. Ahhh, I see you commented about a lens hood, I was wondering why you didn't mention it. I'd also say on top of making sure you have good waterproofs on make sure you have a good waterproof cover for your camera bag. In my case I found the one supplied by Shimoda was not sufficiently waterproof so bought another one which works much better, sometimes I even use both covers! I keep thinking about investing in a Blunt umbrella too!

  • Nice vid discussing shooting strategies in inclement weather. If it's quite rainy, I usually put a cover over my Sony setup. As you mentioned, the Sony camera bodies are a bit sensitive to moisture even if I tape up the hot shoe (gaffer tape). I should also tape up the ports. Because I try to keep the setup relatively dry under rain showers, the only glitch I've experienced involves the LCD screen. It will stop switching between the viewfinder and LCD screen, a bit of a nuisance. After the system "drys" out a bit, the glitch goes away. Otherwise, it a great camera. Thanks again for the vid.

  • I've always claimed to be a fair weather photographer. And I'm sure I've missed some great shots because of it. But, I don't mind a little rain if I'm out shooting. I have an expensive Think Tank rain cover around here somewhere, but I've never used it. I have used a small towel to cover my camera and lens and Kimtech papers to wipe the front lens element. It's not so much being in the rain to take a photo that I mind. It's the driving to a destination, usually at least an hour away, on a gloomy day in the rain that bothers me. I'm sure that's one of the many reasons that I'm an amateur and not a professional photographer. :)

Compostion of photos are great . I carry a piece of hard thin black plastic about 30cm square just to hold over the top of the front lens to shield it from the rain works more often than not.

Thanks for the video!

    • Exactly. If the rain is too bad, then use an umbrella or tent (If the rain is that bad, the cloth won't help either). Wiping and moving the lens with a cloth before each shot after having focused doesn't sound like a great idea.

  • I'm on the fence at whether I like photo stacking/blending or not. Sure it's legit, possible and enhances everything. But at one point it goes into territory of image manipulation, where the scene cannot be taken by a decisive moment and is not entirely what you experienced. Rather, it's a combination of several experiences. One seagull there, waves here, ship there, island over here etc. Nobody except you knows what you did, of course. But kind of makes photography less about decisive moments and more about image processing of everything you recorded that day at that scene. Photographers doing everything right may wonder why they can't get so many dramatic moments interesting enough in a single take. Again, your work is stellar, but I'm on the fence about this.

    @maboleth@maboleth2 жыл бұрын
    • I feel you, but sometimes an excellent photo doesn’t or will never translate entirely what you experienced as well... I like to think that the decisive moment is more of a photo journalistic issue. While putting the pieces on a montage is more of a artistic/poetic technique that allows you to tell a story. More of image making. It’s not like a spray and pray thing. You are out there, capturing what you feel good about to put down something you envisioned or imagine will look good in that story/frame. In a photo journalistic essay you would probably put down a series... and the images wouldn’t be from the exact same point of view...

    • @@guidolima You have a point. If we look at the landscape imagery like a film making, then yeah. Showing your emotions and visuals you experienced and translating that into a single powerful image is a way to go.
