  • The history of Rome is like a party. 1. Monarchy and the beginning of the Republic - brainstorming various ideas on how to plan a party. 2. Julius Caesar and Augustus - the start of the party when everyone arrives in their best attire, smiling and happy. 3. The Five Good Emperors - the peak of the party. The right moment to leave the party, taking the best moments with you and avoiding any incidents or problems. Knowing when to leave is key. 4. From the Dominate to the fall of the West - a few drunken guests, some even intoxicated with other substances, and many peculiar characters - outsiders, but very interesting if you take the time to talk to them. 5. Byzantine period - 3/4 days of hangover after the party that you could have avoided if you had left the party on time and refrained from taking certain substances.

"Maiorianus" is one of a hundred or so channels I watch casually, but only one of three which I respect academically, admire ethically and support financially. You deserve this milestone, and don't be embarrassing about "Gladiator!" It was a truly compelling movie, with a soul-wrenching story and music guaranteed to fill a Roman Aqueduct with Romanophile tears.

  • Congratulations! Your videos are super enjoyable, and as you say, this is a very interesting period of Roman history that is criminally underappreciated. We are talking about some 250 years from the beginning of the Crisis of the third century to the fall of Romulus Augustulus. Thats nearly as much time as the early days of Augustus to the fall of the Nerva-Antonines, thats a LONG time. I'll be congratulating you again when you reach 1 Million, which will not take that long, considering how good your content is! :)

    • The east was Roman in name only. The language was greek, the culture greek and christian. Even during the Roman empire the east was never Romanized like the west was. Greek culture remained dominant in every way. No Latin, no Roman gods, no senate, no anything Roman apart from a name

      @celsus7979@celsus79795 ай бұрын
    • @@celsus7979 I guess this dispute is worthwhile a video... As far as know, Justinian (527-565) was possibly the last Roman emperor to speak Latin as a first language (see Wikipedia). I have coins of that period in Latin (not Greek). But yes, Greek was dominant in the East. Under the rule of Emperor Heraclius in 610, Greek became the official language of the Eastern Roman Empire. Still, the inhabitants considered themself as Romaioi, and the last Eastern Roman Emperor Constantine XI (1449-1453) was named after the Roman Emperor Constantine I (306-337). So it was a Roman Empire up to the end. And I hope there will be also videos of the later periods one day!

I watched the movie King Arthur when it came out and wondered why the soldiers looked the same as in movies set 300 Years earlier. Despite this oversight, the movie served in peaking my interest in the details of that time period, of making me seek answers to other curiosities around that time period. I've always been a supa dupa military history nerd to the point I did 10 years in the army in part so I could relate to these tales from the past with my own experience. And being a super nerd of Roman history, I wrote a 540 page novel set in the 250's and the lack of interest in the period is such, I've never found anyone to read to give me feedbacks. It was supposed to be a 4 books series but I stalled at the beginning of part 2... When I was young, I thought everyone had an interest in the past. The older I grow, the lonelier I become in my passions. On a daily basis, for me, only internet can give a sence of not being the only one on earth to care about our roots. Thanks maiorianus ❤

The one thing I would like for you to change in your channel if you can, is to make all your videos differently. Don't put ads mid video only at the start or at the end of a video. Why did they have so many sub-groups of comitatenses, like Batavii, Cornutii and so on, why did they have sub-groups (seniores and iuniores?) Why did many of them wear crests, while others in their cohort did not? Did they symbolize rank or standing? What is the meaning of crest colors? - I am going to stop now, but there are so many questions i have about the late roman army and I hope you could answer them - even it is only in the far future :D Thank you for making these videos! • Thank you for all you do. Thanks also for acknowledging those who helped you along the way no matter how small or how seemingly inconsequential. Maiorianus is a passion project, that can be seen in this video's honest discussion mapping out what you want to do and why you want to do it. Rome in it's entirety through all of it's ages has captivated my imagination my whole life. I was skeptical of the channel at first, but it only took two videos and I was subscribed. I've only been on board since January, but the volume of content and it's quality are ridiculously high. This channel is a great source of inspiration and stimulates the imagination. I'm so happy I discovered your channel Sebastian. I can't wait to see what's next.

  • Congratulations and much deserved! Your content is always informative and enjoyable. And no shame in Gladiator sparking your interest. That's what historical entertainment should be about. It should be compelling, interesting and invite you to dig deeper. On the same note, they were going to launch the Juno probe to Jupiter without a standard camera. There wasn't any scientific value to be gained. It was all about conducting precise research with instruments and payload space is at a premium, but some folks fought, with good cause, to get a camera on the probe. Even though it may not contribute much to the science directly, it sparks the interest and fascinates the public that we count on to fund this research, and to inspire another generation to get involved with the space program. So I'm a fan of any entertainment that inspires people to seek and learn and I'm thankful for the movie Gladiator, if for no other reason than it brought you here with us today. Cheers mate!

  • You know what I love about your videos was how you mentioned the aftermath of the WRE because nobody ever mentioned what happened after the fall of the WRE.

  • I have a question: If Rome remained a republic and not an empire, does it have what it takes to survive the Crises of the Third Century and the Fifth Century? P.S: Congratulations for reaching 100k subscribers!

    • My theory is that: Republican traditions played major role in romes success, even when republic fell princiat reteined it's functions, only when it completely faded without traditional monarchy culture, it was doomed to have great crisis

      @sandromdivani9935@sandromdivani99355 ай бұрын
    • As i understand it, the old Republican system crumbled under the weight of the complexity of the empire. An example is the invasion of Italy by Hannibal. The consuls ruled for only 1 year. In their desperate desire to be the one to defeat Hannibal they became reckless. Army after army was lost until one consul was brave enough to stop the madness of confronting Hannibal with inexperienced troops. He shadowed Hannibal's armies, harassing them in a guerrilla style. This was seen as cowardly in Rome, but when it worked it was accepted as the way forward. Ironically, the guy had to brave Rome's elite to be a 'coward' in battle. An emperor, the good ones anyway, provided much needed stability and a single focused answer to problems. The senate on the contrary, became overwhelmed by the problems the empire threw at them.

  • Congratulations to Sebastian and this community. I began watching this channel and also your channel about space exploration a few years ago and it's nice to see how much it has grown since then. Space happens to be another one of my passions along with Roman history, but I think it was good that you made the commitment to focus on this channel and passed off operation of the space channel to someone else, because your passion and research is most valuable here covering this rare but important subject. Hopefully this community will continue to grow and share the fascination of late Roman history with the world. P.S. One thing I would like to see more on this channel in the future are collaborations with other Roman history channels when possible, both for cross promotion to different audiences and also because there are some other good related channels here on YT.
