ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS TREE STORAGE SOLUTION!!!... Hiding 12 Foot Tall Doors!
In this video we take a look at a recently completed project. This is a lake house where a family will fly in for the holidays. Out task was to create a storage solution for a very large Christmas tree which will be used in this massive great room. I installed double 12' tall doors and concealed the doors in this millwork detail. The project turned out great. I share some of my strategy and techniques in the video.

My grandpa told me long ago you can tell the skill of a carpenter by how he installs a door. You my friend, are a master!
Being so tall your eye doesn’t see the horizontal seam. I didn’t even know they were double doors until you opened the other door. Really nice job Spencer.
You are second to none Spencer, a true master of his craft. I hope you write a book to showcase your amazing skills and pass down your incredible knowledge of carpentry.
I feel bad about my two plastic storage bins for all my Christmas stuff. Maybe I add a hidden lid.
That job is wack. A man's gotta know his limitations and mine are far from that. You are the man! Gotta hand it to you!
incredible work. the owners will hopefully see this video.
It's good to know that there are still true craftsmen out there. I suspect you do, but I hope you charge top dollar for your work. The consummate professional, you are. Thanks for the video.
Good Lord. What incredible craftsmanship-it's other worldly.
😮I hope that wood stays stable. I built 10 ft doors but I used a steel square tube frame with diagonal truss layout. Used steel jambs as well. I sleep better at night. 😊
*Welcome BACK* 🫳🏻 🎤
Great vid. You are so Indiana Hoosier! “Buggered it up”. Takes one to know one.
The wealth of knowledge. Way to achieve ultimate craftsman level. Everything you do is beyond impressive. Perfect. Thank you for sharing everything and all the bulletpoints of your craft.
Spencer when I’m planning or addressing a problem, I always ask, audibly, what would Spencer do? The answer is my solution. Thank you!
I understand, fully, your comment! However, when I am faced with a challenging request from a client, I audibly say to them, "Sure! I can do that!" But, under my breath I mutter "Good Lord, I have no idea how I'm going to do this! Why on earth did I take on this project!" 😂😂😂
I was trying to figure out how to hide a door. You solved it. Thank you.
That's awesome slat wall and hidden doors and yes the layout is The most important to accommodate all the pieces.we did something similar not that high of course 2 hidden doors and windows
What an amazing job !!! The creative way you did your layouts and attention to detail is inspiring !!!
A soothing and relaxing content that I start watching. There are thousand of ways in doing woodworking and finally I found that one that my eight year old brain can follow.
Wow what a project ! ! AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING ! ! I can see why you didn't want to deal with the camera and discussion. I'll bet you meditated a lot on that one ! ! Great job! THANK YOU !
That is the greatest idea! I know it is not practical for everyone and that many people will think it is extravagant, but if you have the means and the space I think it is wonderful. As I plan my final house (I'm 65) I am definitely having the architects design something similar (if not identical). How great to be able to wheel your fully set up and decorated tree out and back in each year 👊
I have said for years that a closet of this type for the Xmas tree should be very popular in large houses. Over the years, my family would’ve benefited more from a Christmas tree closet than say another bedroom or another garage storing crap I only really bought because I have the space.
Awesome. Nice job Spencer
Killer install! 🤘🏽
I really like adjustable hinges, but I’ve found in my (admittedly limited) experience that I wish there were a way of locking them in once they’re set, because the go out of whack way too frequently and resetting them is the torture of the damned.
Beautiful!
Quite the Tree House. 😂
Slick work.
What you need to remember those type of hinges tend to loose their settings over time. Their smaller counterparts (2 hinges for up 40 kg doors, 3 hinges for up to 50 kg doors) require adjusting at least once a year. Of course I mean doors used daily in home.
V cool thanks for posting
This one gave me a headache thinking of layout and carrying the weight great job
You could break up the top seam by running some of the door slats longer than the door and using scarf cuts.
great work
Fantastic work! It’s crazy how much money some people have.
Hard work, smart business, and creating a lot value for the world pay off. Keeps guys like me doing what I love.
My Charlie Brown xmas tree doesn't require quite that big of a closet.😂
What a tremendous job. I am very impressed with your skills in being able to even initially get the level of fit and alignment you achieved for doors at this scale with a matching wall repeating wood finish that must not move. My suggestion would have been to have the builder use 14ga-12ga metal framing for the walls to keep them as stationary and straight as possible so that alignment of supporting jambs and walls remains in place over time. This is a bespoke wood masterpiece that is furniture grade and by its use/design disappears as it works. Amazing!! Ray Stormont
Agreed, metal studs would be ideal in this application.
Another great job! Do you ever work on existing homes or just new construction? I'd be curious to see how you handle an older home. Cheers!
All new construction currently.
Spencer’s the best
I don't know who has more tools you or Homedepto 😅
👏👏👏👏👏
Fuking awesome
Sheeeeeshh 🤌💯
Very nice execution on the layout and install. You might want to install the bifold aligners. But I don’t like them. The slabs will take some seasonal moisture and even 1/16” warp in one direction may show at the center. The closet and adjacent room will have slightly different humidity levels seasonally as doors remain closed. Especially if the closet has two exterior walls. In addition to the magnets and interior aligners, a flush bolt on the right door (passive side) with an adjustable strike (slotted screw holes) at the floor might be an easy homeowner adjustment when needed. The aligners tend to have some play in them and can get knocked out of position. From your previous video, it’s a drive. I would even gift the owner a screwdriver and give them a lesson on how to use it. When they call you to come anyway, you can then bill for travel time. Great video as always. I’m glad the exterior wall was plumb to meet your half rounds. After the ridge beam video, I had some doubts. I don’t think you need to keep the hinge gauge story pole from this one. Sort of a one off if there ever was one. Great work as always.
Agreed. I do this when I build double garden gates. Anchor one with a cane bolt. Lends stability and also bears the weight of the door and avoids sag over time.
@@idontthinkso666 good practice on any double door set up active/passive. Especially with an astragal. These don’t have an astragal per se but the 1/2 round may act like an astragal. Twin doors have a mind of their own. Tall doors will react to seasonal changes in humidity. Not to mention the framing behind the wall finish. The jamb material is only as stable as the framing it’s attached to.
That is sick! Do you worry that the doors may expand length-wise with such tight margins, especially given how tall they are? I'm curious how you factored that in.
I'm not too worried about length wise expansion. I'm much more concerned about the doors bowing when the painter sprays them.
Spencer, any new shop updates on the way
That's on my list of future videos to do!
Would be interested to know how long it took from start to finish. From fixing the out of plumb wall, to finish. Also, did you use that zeta to put those long boards in like you did before? Just curious.
Face nailed the moulding on with 18 gauge brads. Zeta would have been insanely expensive for this detail. About 100 hours including design time. Definitely very time consuming.
👏👏💜👏💜👏💜❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️
Plywood and quarter round
Half round.
Wild 🤣
Was the floor plum
It seems like the Christmas tree would be very skinny for how tall it will be
The Door Opening is a little under 60" wide.
1 3/4 Out of plumb man.... more of a ''fu****g fact'' than a ''fun fact'' Nice work!
How to you fasten the slats or batten to the veneer?
18 gauge nails 2" long.
what state are you in?
He's in the middle of nowhere. Indiana or some other square state.
Those hinges are fashioned off a cabinet door hinge the injected with steroids! It has all the adjustments of a cabinet door hinge ! Spencer I was shocked at how far out that wall was? I grew up in a GC’s home and I live in one my Dad built ! I recently checked the walls and after 31 yrs they are still dead nutz on ! My Dad had a reputation and other GC’s called him in to fix Girders that a framing crew got out ! That’s a custom home ? Your GC I am sure is not happy ! I told a customer this summer after fighting their job I can’t work here anymore I loose money every time I do work for you and you guys hv heart burn with my prices so let’s just call it good and part friends !
Interesting and impressive from a carpenter perspective. Shallow and wasteful from a human perspective. Christ
