    • Slip lead, tree method. Throw a ball once to a park or in the backyard for a few before leaving, a firm still knee helps let them jump into hard things if they jump at you. My dog only sits through physical touch or a very firm commands. No freaking out when he be jumps. You must train you family and friends to be calm and talk gestures. If they can’t do that get new friends, real friends listen to you when you are training your dog. Let them wear themselves out. I don’t care what some people say, some dogs only respect authority or a physical activity prevents them from doing a behavior, not all but some dogs.

    • Just stay in one spot until he calms down and he will eventually sit. You have to be extremely patient with dogs. Then award him for sitting and wait until he’s calm again repeat this process and then start the leash training. There’s steps to take. First teaching dog to sit on command is the BEST command to learn. It’s basically tells the dog listen and observe

  • I love it when you see a dog learning something in just a few minutes and keeping up the routine makes life so much easier. Yet some of us took on a rescue dog. We get frustrated and upset with the dog and start looking through training videos trying to find the one that works. Then you realise what you really took on with the rescue dog. For example, I have two rescue dogs, and walks on leash are painful. One dog walks incredibly slow and the other believes he's in a sled dog race. I say heel and the slower dog goes even slower. How slow, I'll explain. We get in the gate of the dog park, do two laps and the slow dog is only just ready to stop sniffing, pissing, eating grass and ready to head off. It's mortally painful. Both dogs won't change, they modify but stay the same. Corrections sometimes make the dogs worse, especially if they are new and have been bullied by humans.

      @Nerdperior@Nerdperior2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Nerdperior It takes longer, but every time they pull, stop dead and hold it. Do a little tug and try to get their attention and/or get them to come back to stand near you and wonder wtf you're doing. The key is then when you start walking again, do so with BIG praise and even a treat. Or do the back and forth trick where you walk one way and the second they pull you stop, turn and walk the other way. Do this back and forth for twenty minutes if you have to, but the key is getting them used to you being in control of when to turn and how. The hardest part is having them look to you for guidance.

  • Loose leash walking remains my biggest frustration with my 8 month-old Golden Retriever. I attended a class with her, and this was touched on, and distracting her with a high-reward treat (offering it close to my right hip while turning her away from the distraction). The problem is I’m not even able to advance beyond my back yard, because it doesn’t matter what reward I offer her, ie steak, hot dogs, cheese, etc, it’s not enough of an incentive to cause her to turn away from the leaf, twig, piece of grass, et al, and come to me. When I offer the high value reward, she won’t eat it. The most I can get is a big yawn or she’ll stop, sit down, and scratch herself. Even if I can get her to take the reward in her mouth, she immediately spits it out. Any advice from anyone that’s overcome a similar issue would be greatly appreciated! T, ia😊

    • Lol, I just have to say my 5 month old lab is the same, angel inside, outside she eats everything under the sun, sometimes will eat treats but 100% stress. She'll run ahead of me but the second I slow down she'll sidetrack to eating something, then have a temper tantrum if I try to get her to go and will just lay there.

  • What if you have an extra small breed puppy? I have a 7 month 'teacup' pomeranian and theres no way she can safely wear a collar as she chokes herself without stopping, and as im sure ypu know small dogs are prone to tracheal collapse, so she wears a harness. She pulls non stop from the moment we get out of the door, doing the bunny hop and trying desperately to run! I've tried doing the stop, wait for slack but as soon as we go again shes pulling like crazy, ive also tried doing the double tap tug on the lead- she doesnt care just keeps pulling.... What do I do?

  • Think I need to start again from beginning. Have to use pee pads and also use grass patch. Not an option to let her go outside by herself. Or to go outside every couple of hours. Double story house and she is a teacup so lots of places she can fit through and hurt herself. How do you set out the pee pads. She does go herself or when I put her on them. But poo next to the pad not on it. Help.

    • I have a 5 mo old maltipoo also small. We are able to take her out every 2 hrs. We have a pee pee pad by back door which she rarely uses now. At 2 months she used pee pee pads and we placed them strategically in our family room and kitchen. We used 5 at a time. She did pee on them but never Poo. That was on the floor. We did not crate her but she is only allowed in 2 rooms which are tiled. We take her out on a leash and harness or she takes off, if you can’t take her out maybe you should crate her. I know they make a 2room crate which you can set up with a pad on one side and a blanket on other. I feel 4 u. It is difficult and time consuming.

I would describe walking my most recent dog as similar to trying to hold a semi-truck back from taking off down the sidewalk. I have strangers commenting to me daily that I'm getting quite a workout with him. I guess that's the one positive. This video is wonderful for a dog who is maybe 15 or 16 years old with zero drive.

  • Let's see them try this on a 1 year old 80lb Lab who's had obedience training but is now in the 'teenage' phase and won't listen, pulls, and is freight train when either in our big yard or outside. He has head down and sniffs constantly and doesn't pay attention to me at all. He's very friendly and I am only just able to get him to stop jumping on people but it is consistent training. He will be good for 1 or 2 days then the next day of training he's a wild animal who is strong willed and very frustrating. I've had 7 dogs over the last 25 years, and I've never had a dog so strong willed and stubborn and I've already spent a fortune on lessons and tools to get him trained and so far nothing is working. My last resort is the Gentle Leader, but at this point I am not feeling confident it will work.

    • Gillian Gair I believe this is very common, should be a quick fix if you have a proper relationship with your dog. When my dog was a puppy I had to correct him two maybe three times and he never even thought twice about lounging at cars. Hopefully by now your puppy understand no. When I corrected my dog I would grab scruff of neck slightly so that he understood what he was doing was unacceptable while saying no. This work with chewing on shoes or anything else for that matter . A couple corrections and they will understand what is and what is not acceptable. Balance give great praise when they behavior correctly

    • I'm sure your relationship with your pup is fine, dont listen to the othe comments. My suggestion is whenever you see a car approaching,get your dog into the habit of sitting and staying until the car is gone. You can make a game out of it by using the "freeze" command. The end result is to hopefully have the pup stand still when a car passes. Good luck.

      @b__mart@b__mart3 жыл бұрын
    • @@b__mart It's harder when they're a little older because they turn the stop/go into a game :( The key is to make yourself more interesting than his surroundings, which is VERY difficult for most dogs. I've got Saluki cross and she was a terror on the leash to start with (hunting dogs who don't give a sh*t about you lol), but overtime and the mountains of treats, she now looks to me for guidance while we're walking. That's the key you want to work towards - whenever you stop and/or change positions, the dog immediately looks up at you and says, "Yes, daddy?! Now what?!"
