The best part about this whole scene is the fact that Armstrong grows stronger when he starts to talk about his dream. Raiden is smacking him around one second, but the minute he tells his dream he suddenly manhandles Raiden like it's nothing. Which is the recurring theme of the game. Basically, whoever has the stronger ideals triumphs over those with weaker ones. This is why Raiden loses to Sam at the beginning of the game, but once he admits to himself that he kills his enemies simply because he enjoys it and not because of his shaky belief in “justice” or “protecting the weak”, he starts mopping the floor with Desperado and Armstrong.

While it's true that armstrong wasn't talking merely about physical strength, i'm not sure it was as much about mental strength either, like you suggested. Really, I think he was mainly thinking of anyone who needs a social safety net in order to survive. While he never said anything explicitly bigoted, or began preaching the prosperity gospel, it really felt like he was going to do at least one of either at any moment, because this general Contempt For The Weak felt all too familiar to me. Well, in the context of MGR Technically Raiden and Armstrong's ideologies are similar for the most part. It's their definition of the weak that arguably causes the most issues when it comes to Armstrong's plan. Raiden is "The protector of the Weak" Who believes in protecting those who can't defend themselves or don't have any means to from those stronger than them. Armstrong's idea of the weak are people who never earned anything and were given most of what they possess (most notably politicians) and he believes that the Strong are those who have fought and survived to earn their keep not strictly the physically strong. This is why Armstrong does want Raiden on his side as he sees Raiden being his textbook definition of a strong individual as he put it "Through sheer force of will and with your own two hands, you took back your life". Raiden's misunderstanding of Armstrong's definition of the weak caused the conflict. And of course the abduction of poor children to use their brains to make soldiers, but that's a whole other topic.

@miamor26242 жыл бұрын
@@i_i8924 Not actually. When Armstrong refers to killing for what they believe in he doesn't mean it like that. He means that no American will have to fight a dishonest war. Less Vietnam wars and more just ones likes WW2. American soldiers wont die and bleed so that some corporation can access oil reserves. They'll willingly risk death because that country attacked America first clearly and aggressively. The weak that would be purged are those same people who bow down to international corporations and put profit before morality. Armstrong wants the morally strong to thrive, not the physically. He wants politicians to enact laws because they genuinely think they're good, not because some corporation donated to his campaign. He wants to end PMCs because he believes that people should only kill if they believe its morally right. Not because they want money. In his new America, Morality would trump profit, and real politics would be decried as an excuse for their lack of will.
@YunoGasaiMC20122 жыл бұрын
@@YunoGasaiMC2012 feels like you are strawmaning his character. WW2 wouldn't be a "just" war in his view. at least not universally just. "morally" the germans did their best to purge "evil humans". morally the rest of europe did good by kicking down the "insane and evil germans". the americans in the senator's image would support both sides. morality is defined and balanced by the collective. an individual can warp his view of morality into the absurd, which applies to the senator as well.

it's so interesting to look at, most bosses for video games are built up over time, maybe through an encounter at the start of the game or a character that was previously known in the franchise. while mgrr builds all of the story and exposition right into the final battle. They presented him so well since both the player and Raiden were learning about him at the same time while fighting him. And the "I have a dream!" twist created a completely different notion about Armstrong. Starting the battle as a formidable foe and ending it as a bad, but honorable enemy.

The best part about this whole scene is the fact that Armstrong grows stronger when he starts to talk about his dream. The pure power of passion towards his goals turns Armstrong from a politician to a weapon that can surpass metal gear.
Yes That's called anime talking power
Which is the recurring theme of the game. Basically, whoever has the stronger ideals triumphs over those with weaker ones. This is why Raiden loses to Sam at the beginning of the game, but once he admits to himself that he kills his enemies simply because he enjoys it and not because of his shaky belief in “justice” or “protecting the weak”, he starts mopping the floor with Desperado and Armstrong.

"The weak will be purged and the strongest will thrive" What a reasonable man
Well, in the context of MGR Technically Raiden and Armstrong's ideologies are similar for the most part.

There's only the weak because the powerful feed off of them. If all were fair and right their would be no weak because everyone would have the power to run their own communities and government.
The fact that Armstrong just airdrops into the finale to become one of the best bosses ever is the best thing about this game.
it's so interesting to look at, most bosses for video games are built up over time, maybe through an encounter at the start of the game or a character that was previously known in the franchise. while mgrr builds all of the story and exposition right into the final battle. They presented him so well since both the player and Raiden were learning about him at the same time while fighting him. And the "I have a dream!" twist created a completely different notion about Armstrong. Starting the battle as a formidable foe and ending it as a bad, but honorable enemy.
The thing that’ll always amuse me is that Armstrong is the second boss in the same game to come literally out of nowhere and have a meme worthy speech - seriously, did anyone see Monsoon coming? I'll vote for this man any day
Seriously, I can't stop replaying the part where he says "Wipe the slate clean. BURN IT DOWN!" The writing is off the charts 🔥🔥!
I love how it ends with “how the hell did you get elected?”
Me then: How the hell did he get elected? Me now: Why the hell can't I vote for him?
@@actualturtle2421 I'm confident that Donald Trump Jr will be similar to Senator Armstrong, when he finally has enough of all the bs going around these days and decides to run for president.
@@DesertStateNevada Trump Jr will do exactly what his daddy did, which is grift off of right wing rage and never actually do anything. If you're still thinking Trump is the answer, you've got a long way to go.
@@actualturtle2421 "right wing rage"? lol Lets see if you can actually explain what you're talking about. But the moment you start blabbing about nonsense you heard on the young turds, bsnbc, vox, reddit, twitter, late night propaganda shows or etc. this conversation is over.
@@actualturtle2421 how do you like your new gas price? Jobs and income drying up? Unchecked mass migration that gets most government funds while you and your fam can starve for all they care? Increased crime rates and unchecked rioters that can take your shit with impunity? New wars that will serve no one but a handful of elites? Truth is as much of an asshole Trump was he did truly care for Americans.

I like how people are saying "I would totally vote for Armstrong" unironically but if he was real people would probably hate him and would be terrified of his ideology
Yeah, evil & stupid people would be against Armstrong's ideals, I.e. liberty & individual rights.
@@Archedgar and staging terrorist attacks to gain power and justify a war on terror, harvesting orphan brains to train an army of child soldiers, and planning a genocide of the weak in America. He's the bad guy for a reason lmao

You think hes stupid enough to just scream his ideology to the world? "Hey! Im Steven Armstrong and I wish to turn america into one gigantic battle royale! Vote for me will ya."
@@Archedgar He's a social darwinist. His plans include child trafficking for organs and brainwashed cyborg soldiers, rallying American jingoism to get the presidency, and then burn all civilization to the ground so the strong can purge the weak and then live in a completely anarchic might makes right world. Where "the law changes to suit the individual". Meaning that if someone isn't strong enough to fight back you can do anything to them. Absolutely no moral enforcement or structure.

Memes aside, I really like how Armstrong legitimately looked hurt when Raiden pretends to agree with him and calls him insane. He honestly believed in everything he said and saw killing Raiden as the last thing he wanted to do
Killing Raiden would mean killing the very best example of what he wishes to acomplish. As the senator himself put, Jack is one that took back his life with his own strength, his own ideals and will. Not to mention how he also said Raiden would make a great successor
Too bad you can't choose to accept his premise as a player.
@@Irongrip62 it's an awful thing tbh, wage ww3 to end war as an economy, who will remain alive by the end of the war ? who will pick up the scraps and rebuild society ? it'll be like the middle ages just with technology. so it makes sense why Raiden didn't side with him.
@@danialyousaf6456 in his head WW3 is the filter to separate the weak from the strong which isn’t at all how it would work in reality but he’s not that sane anyway

Senator Armstrong is just a nanomachine powered boomer
He would only be a nano-boomer if his Metal Gear was a John Deere ride-on lawnmower.

The trick of this speech is how what he's saying is completely insane but he sprinkles in a few legitimate grievances. That's how demagogues work: You play on your audiences fear and hatred.
0:07 Raiden narrowly avoids the uppercut by retracting his chin a bit. He has a moment of retrospection and chuckles- all game he's been getting scraped on the chin by attacks but this one he cleanly dodges and he's proud. Just makes it all the funnier in the very next scene when Armstrong punches the shit outta him xD
And his chin glows red hot from the friction of sliding on the floor
Oh my God, you have a keen eye.
You can actually see how chin move back into his mouth to avoid the attack
Dude, I've seen this cutscene like 200 times and never noticed that he actually retracts his chin!
This, plus in the DLC we see Sam avoiding chin attacks WITHOUT his upgrades yet.
