  • Take it from someone that has had JBL, Altec and ElectroVoice reconing training at the factories, this was exceptionally well done. I'd love to know where they got an edgewound voice-coil made! That's the secret to JBL, Altec and E-V as well. That edgewound voice-coil is why all three are at least 3dB more effficent than almost any other type of speaker (with the possible excptions of Cetec, Gauss and Stephens-Trusonic and certain Peavey speakers which had edgewound coils as well.). I'm afraid those days are gone forever now with the bulk of speakers cheaply mass-produced in China. These folks did a really fine job, right down to the original style vented dust cap.

    • What about someone like AudioFrog today? I don't know anything about speakers/sound, but I recently have put some money into a car system that I hope will end up sounding really good once I can finish it up by getting a DSP and Tweeters. This definitely looks like a lost art to the USA. Even the AudioFrog speakers that I purchased are made in China. China's issue isn't that they make everything low quality nor that they don't know quality. China's issue is that you have to be on-top of their quality, or they will cut corners any way they possibly can. On top of that, the companies that use China will try to cut all of the corners possible also. I ran a small business and used China manufacturing. It is possible to have a quality product made in China. The issue will be finding a lot of people who are willing to pay the price you will need to charge for the quality.

  • Very nice restoration process, congratulations ! However, a rebuilt like this (or any other speaker) does not guarantee that the speaker will sound like the original one - materials will never be the same, specially decades later! There are many variables that influence final performance: wire thickness, copper purity and resistance; total coil weight; cone paper quality & thickness; quantity of glue applied.... and the list goes on with other minor details. Sometimes the speaker gets better than the original one since some modern materials can be better. But what matters here is the the restoration process, which was fully accomplished, thanks for sharing !

  • Great work by a truly gifted craftsman. Wish you had added some more explanations about : - the products used on each step, glues etc. - the work done to refresh the internal and external surfaces where the coil moves into. Obviously the width of this gap must be as little modified as possible, but the surfaces must be made perfectly smooth again, so it’s certainly one of the most delicate steps. Other than that, a wonderful restoration of a speaker that most people would have thought to be destroyed beyond any hope of repair !! 👍👍👍

I have 2 pre 80's, one meter high, stereo speaker boxes that sounds great with a 180 Watt amplifier when playing 45 rpm vinyl and LP 33 rpm records on a turntable. The tall speaker boxes have 2 x 10 inch bass speakers, 2 x 6 inch mid range and 2 x 4 inch tweeters each, boasting beautiful, rich, natural sound. 😀

  • IDK If I'd call the older speakers 🔊 beautiful sounding? LMAO but they are definitely works of art by how their constructed and their simplicity of how well made they were! But some of them do sound really nice and I've had some Blaupunkts in a HiFi which sounded better than some modern designed speakers 🔊that I can definitely give credit to lol!

    • Hi Jim we value all opinions. About what is good and best I think it goes back to how people experience hearing from a speaker. Have a nice day. Thank You

      @SatriaSpeaker@SatriaSpeaker2 жыл бұрын
    • Well, people vote with their wallets and quite often they buy old equipment like this or by MacIntosh, Crown, etc... or in the guitar world Marshall, Fender, etc... and apparently the prevailing opinion is that there's something to be said for the old school products compared to what's made today. Not saying I agree... but I can't help but say I was wondering how much they wanted for that speaker by the time it was all finished!!

  • Nice restauration, its good to see good things can have a second life ! (Love that!) The way quality of old materials is in most cases better then modern. The only thing I can give you advice on is your safety, not using cloves, glases or mouth gear will cause you harm in the long run, also safely disgard chemicals to protect nature. Keep up the nice work and "Play-In" those puppies well ! Maybe hard to find matching pairs ;)

    • Looks to be rather low watt rated.... and my guess 16 ohms to suit old valve amps. The 515B is a 15" bass driver. Personally, I don't know why old rich dudes (no doubt with age related hearing loss) pay big money for old gear and ridiculous 'monster' cables, when reputable modern manufacturers like JBL and Electro Voice offer far higher performance drivers designed using modern technology... come a long way since the 50's, man.

      @BTW...@BTW...2 жыл бұрын
    • @@BTW... -- It's the aesthetic component of 'the components', man! My Dad was a fine self-realized organist and electronics genius, and he would dig this. It's about being in touch with history, literally. There's something about the tangible qualities of old gear, not unlike the experience of leafing through a CD liner or poring over a vintage LP cover and sleeve for lyrics, production information and cool artwork. Contrast that with 99-cent MP3 downloads of mediocre quality that have no physical medium accompanying them. Many modern cars could out-muscle or otherwise technically outshine almost any classic vehicle from years ago, but they're not likely to similarly endure as endearing cultural icons because scant few of them impart an equivalent or even approximate sense of romance and depth of character. What kid in 2050 is going to wax nostalgic about his grandfather's Toyota Yaris? Maybe three in all of America and one in South Africa. I can appreciate the nerd aspects of any niche interest, but to take the counterpoint to your comment, I can't see any other reason why rich young dudes with age-related arrogance would pay thousands of dollars for amplifiers or 'reference quality' speakers that, on a realistic level, yield performance superlatives *_only_* perceptible with sophisticated testing equipment. I have an excellent 'ear', and that geeked-out bullshit has always made me shake my head. Yes, modern gear is specification-superior, but I love this old speaker and the dedication given to its resurrection. It was well-made, yet I will say that my obsessive self has a problem with the name and ratings badge being so slipshod in its placement. ; ] Check out this video. Here's a textbook example if not *_the_* definition of ridiculous superfluousness -- and I love it, as arguably inane as it might be in some ways. kzhead.info/sun/Z8ZrebOHn3yjq68/bejne.html EDIT: Here's a bit of a 'spoiler' for the TL;DR attention-deficient types who at least skipped to the end of my comment. The video is about a nerdy 'old rich dude' who could afford to lavish time, finances and exacting attention to detail on the pursuit of his passion as an audiophile.
