What Happened to the Mirage Las Vegas?

Las Vegas, child of the Hoover Dam, was once a once a place to stop and have dinner on your way to somewhere else, but the Rat Pack and countless other entertainers changed that. Then, Steve Wynn came in and literally changed the definiton of resort--Mega Resort.
The Mirage was the first modern hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Built in the late 1980s, it was constructed at a time when tourism to Las Vegas was crashing and the town was still hungover on the Rat Pack days.
Its tropical theme and thousands of rooms ushered in a new generation of hospitality and the Mirage and its volcano forever changed the status quo in Las Vegas. MGM later acquired the property and dealt with the loss of the Siegfried and Roy show, ushering in the "Love" Beatles show by Cirque De Solei. Then they spiraled the property into a Wall Street gamble and the property wound up bunched in a realty trust.
MGM was also the manager of the hotel and decided that they wanted to focus on newer venues. They sold their lease agreement contract to Hard Rock International in 2021 and questions have lingered as to what Hard Rock plans to add to the property, and what they play to take away.
Join me in Episode 16 of Modern Ruins as we reveal everything we know about Hard Rock's plans and explore what happened to The Mirage Hotel and Casino of Las Vegas.

  • The Mirage will always have a special place in my heart. In 1994 I put five dollars into a slot machine and I won $2000. With that $2000 I put $2000 as a down payment for an old historic house in Galveston Texas to use as a vacation home. Then I won a dream Kitchen and I put that dream kitchen in the house in Galveston. I will always have happy memories and I felt so lucky. I ended up selling the house for double what I paid for it. I also got to see Siegfried and Roy on the front row and I got the shake his hand. It was awesome.

  • What horrible decisions by these suits at the top. The Mirage is a beautiful escape. Alittle TLC to the rooms and it would be on top. The volcano, greenery, trees, waterfall are all amazing and needed MORE in the dessert that is Las Vegas, not less. And certainly not to be replaced by a huge bright guitar. Im still dumbfounded by the decision of taking the pirate theming out of Treasure Island. That hotel went hand in hand with the Mirage and was my FAVORITE on the strip. Now look at it. Just a bunch of chain eateries and no soul, completely devalued. To which I fear will happen to the Hard Rock. Elegance with natures beauty speak to me. Bellagio has it. Mirage has it. Don’t take that away.

  • When MGM took over, the artistry of Steve Wynn was lost and the resort went downhill fast. I used to say if Steve Wynn hadn’t built resorts in Las Vegas and run them I’d never return. And since Wynn Resorts lost Steve Wynn’s influence it’s true, I’ve never been back, but I remember what a wonderful environment and experience he created while taking our money.

  • I’m a70yo Veteran and retired Corporate Pilot. I was able to spend a lot of time in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The CEO & Chairman of the company loved both places and we went to Las Vegas about 25 - 30 times a year and Atlantic City at least 8- 10 nights a month. So I also became very popular at these resorts. I was at the Grand Opening of the Bellagio which was an amazing experience. My life experiences are many and I have no regrets. I’ve flown around the world many times and have met some amazingly nice people everywhere. The few not so nice people are always around but I avoided them all and never looked back. If I died tomorrow I would thank God for a great life and ask if I could come back and do it exactly the same way. Hopefully God will say “Yes Mark You Did Good.” and let me do it again.

I'm sure its going to be an ugly rectangle of a pool. After enjoying the Mirage pool, with all it's little lagoons, I cannot stand being in a rectangle shaped pool anymore. Hard Rock is going to leave the plot of land that the Siegfried and Roy secret Garden sits on, once the dolphin area and cat area is flattened, for future development.

  • I loved The Mirage as it was before MGM. Sometime in the mid 2000s under MGM they got rid of all that made it a place you wanted to stay. Just rubbish these days. Steve Wynn knew how to make a great hotel. MGM made it feel as though something was trying to suck money out of you wherever you went in there. But, in the Steve Wynn days, this was a wonderful place.

  • The Mirage was kept nice and up to date all the way through 2015 ish I'd say . Mirage was a beautiful place , all the plants & water falls and they did a good job of keeping it nice throughout most of it's History . They did let it get old feeling for a second in the early second half of it's existence as well as there at the very end after they already knew it would be torn down so were just getting the last bit out of her . Mirage was A Great Hotel Casino on The Las Vegas Strip That has a great significance and lasting History of being the start of The Las Vegas Strip We now know today .

  • Nice presentation. I was in Las Vegas last month and went to see the Mirage volcano. So many of the family-friendly aspects of Vegas have disappeared, it's nice to see the volcano and the fountain show at the Bellagio. The cost of visiting Vegas have gone up astronomically and the free attractions disappearing as well as the buffet prices getting unreasonable, it's no wonder that fewer people are going to Vegas. Speaking of the buffets, the pandemic impacted them the hardest with many closing and now only starting to open part-time. You can't depend on them for a regular meal as well as not being able to afford them on their sporadic operating hours. If the tourism is down, I wouldn't have guessed it from all the people and traffic on the strip at night. Because of the expense, many people are finding housing off the strip. With the buffets in disarray, stand alone restaurants and fast food chains seem to be booming. Entertainment venues have become out of reach for many people. Gambling used to be the main source of income and draw for Vegas, bargain food and entertainment was the icing on the cake for tourists, but no more.

I'm glad this history is here, it verifies my memory of childhood in the 80s, when the adults would talk about how Las Vegas went to shit in the 70s and 80s and how much better it all was back in the 1950s, 60s, early 70s. Today people talk about how great Vegas was in the 80s, 90s, 2000s. But that's not reality. Vegas was not that cool through most of the 80s, not until 1989. Ofcourse, people will always say 10, 20, 30 years ago everything was better.

Managed an off day and got two nights in the Mirage and the Sigfried & Roy show for less than a single night in a room went for. We had seats on the stage. I manage to keep that last point secret from Darling Wife, who only found out about it when usher reminded her "keep your hands off the stage". She was two feet away from the face of the tiger when they walked it around; tiger gave her a look like "you're a cat person, aren't you"? Because of the curve of the stage, we could actually see through the stage and the illusions, which made it no difference in the wonder.

The volcano and water displays were amazing ... as were the white tigers in the lobby!
