Things Not To Say To People With Dwarfism

I would also rather be rich than poor and pretty instead of ugly, healthy instead of unhealthy etc, basically anything that makes life easy instead of difficult. Every day seems like it's just preparing for tomorrow, yet every day is the same thing, wake up, take pills, do treatment, pills, more pills, go to school, take my pills there, do treatments afterschool, go and do my daily shot, go to bed.

    @fxckmanet@fxckmanet5 жыл бұрын
    • They covered Dyscalculia on an episode of Degrassi-The Next Generation(it's a Canadian 90's teen drama if you don't know). One of the brainiest students called Liberty is getting special lessons after school and nobody understands because "Liberty is the smartest girl in school, she can't be getting tutored". Then her teacher hands her a pamphlet that everyone in school rumours is a love note and the teacher ultimately gets suspended under suspicion of sleeping with Liberty because the rumours get out of hand(the students are like 13 at this point in the show cause I reckon it was series 2). Then Liberty comes clean when one of her "friends" is like, "is it true you're sleeping with the teacher. Everyone says he passed you a love note". and she says, "NO!!! It's a pamphlet on Dyscalculia. It's Dyslexia with numbers. He's been helping me because it's embarrassing. I'm supposed to be the smartest kid in school". That was 30 years ago and I reckon people are still as clueless about it today. In the show a teacher was suspended under monstrous suspicions because a girl was too ashamed to admit she reads numbers a bit funny.

Unfortunately my lack of knowledge would prevent me from interacting with someone with dwarfism if given the chance as I'd be too afraid of offending or unintentionally hurting their feelings. For example, until seeing this I had thought the preferred term was midget & not dwarf because I associated dwarf with fairy tales like 'Snow white' & for some reason I thought that may be offensive.. I sincerely appreciate BBC for doing these "what not to say" series as its been wonderful to learn things that I otherwise would not have known.. Thank You & your amazing diversity within each group you host is wonderful!! Keep it up! Huge Hugs.
