  • I'm an engineer and I've been cracking up through this whole video. This is how every project I ever did during college went, including the shrug when the 1.5 spring spacebar was like... good enough? Also PLA and ABS is basically what super glue is made for. Cyanoacrylate should always be your number 1 go-to for anything plastic that needs to be fixed.

    @Emilyspace_@Emilyspace_ Жыл бұрын
    • Cyanoacrylate is okay, but Weld-On is much better and creates a weld between materials that is as strong as the material itself Edit: Caveat to this, it only works with certain types of polymer materials, like PLA and Acrylic, and will even join dissimilar materials it works with. It's less of an adhesive and more of a solvent, and unlike CA glue, it doesn't leave any of itself behind once set.

      @dylangergutierrez@dylangergutierrez Жыл бұрын
    • for pla, ditch the glue entirely and use a woodburner/soldering iron (with a sacrificial tip) to weld the parts back together. you'll warp the surface unless you get good at it, but it's WAY stronger than glue. for abs, just use acetone. melting plastic together is always better than glue

    • I break too many parts cos I'm a monkey brain designer that thinks 3dprint plastic is as good as injection moulded shit, one thing I always do is friction welding; using the Swiss army knife of jank, the dremel. Get some pla or abs or whatever the 3dprint was made of, put an end into the dremel and tighten and cut about 4cm sticking out the top and use it like a welder. Turn it on and put it on the plastic surface and let it melt, then just move it around and just move it around the crack, shit will be as strong or stronger than the print. Sand down and your good

      @exoslomo@exoslomo Жыл бұрын

But I love content like this, really keeps things fresh. It brings back personal memories of working on some crazy DIY projects (including my endgame keyboard) with all the various unpredictable setbacks and the different clever solutions you get forced to come up with on a pinch. That cardboard stabiliser shim idea was brilliant given the circumstances. Must be hard being a perfectionist and being forced to adapt like that. Cheesey as it sounds, this the sort of thing personal growth is made of. You've probably learned something about yourself along with the maker space and convention environment as a whole.

  • Wonderful! You already pointed out most mistakes. The one thing I would have started with is aluminum rod from the hardware store for the stabilizer bar. It's fairly soft, so easily bends around a table edge. In a pinch, I'd use a metal wire clothes hanger. That's my only suggestion, I'm very happy you went through with this.

Additionally, I'll be joining your highest tier available on Patreon. You've been one of the funniest and relatable MK content creators to me, so it's not even a question to give back. I'm planning to start my own channel here called "The Void" and who knows, maybe one day we can collaborate! Keep up the great work!

  • If you have an issue with the stabilizer bar later, try using a first aid pad, they are very thin and will provide better support. Soak it in a super glue and wrap it around once and let it dry completely, then if you want, put another layer to double down. sand away the rough parts and it should be strong enough.
