The 2024 Renault Espace represents a seismic shift for one of the auto industry's most iconic nameplates. After nearly 40 years as a pioneering minivan, the Espace is reborn as a three-row SUV, abandoning its sliding door roots to embrace the crossover bodystyle that has taken over family hauler duties worldwide.
Don't let the nameplate fool you - the new Espace bears little resemblance to its minivan predecessors. It's essentially a long-wheelbase version of the Austral compact crossover, measuring 5.5 inches shorter and a staggering 474 pounds lighter than the outgoing Espace. Sleek styling and a lower ride height of 1.25 inches give it a far more athletic stance.
The reinvented Espace offers buyers flexibility, with available five or seven-seat configurations. Even with all rows in use, there's 5.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Fold that rearmost bench and you're treated to a capacious 64.2 cubes - more than some larger SUV rivals. Renault also offers an expansive panoramic glass roof to amplify the open, airy cabin ambiance.
Technology abounds, with digital displays dominating the dash no matter which trim you select. The base Techno gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12-inch touchscreen, while upper trims can add a massive 9.3-inch head-up display. Wireless device charging, USB-C ports galore, and ample 12V sockets ensure everyone's gadgets stay juiced.
Under the hood is Renault's familiar 1.3-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gas engine operating as a full hybrid. With electric motor assistance, the Espace makes a combined 199 horsepower - enough for adequate 8.8-second sprints to 62 mph, but trailing many rivals. The payoff is impressive efficiency, with Renault estimating 4.7L/100km combined.
The Espace also boasts some intriguing tech highlights, including multi-link rear suspension and four-wheel steering to tighten its turning circle to a compact car-like 10.4 meters. At speed the rear wheels steer in-phase to enhance stability.
With classy styling, a well-appointed cabin, and clever packaging, the reborn Espace seems to check many of the must-have SUV boxes for family buyers. And while it may no longer wear its iconic sliding door heritage on its sleeve, the Espace's ability to haul ample people and cargo while sipping fuel could make it a surprise hit in Renault's reinvented SUV lineup.
