    • Many reactions, people mention the contrast in vocal tone, with Andy as raspy & Bruno smooth. They both have more flexibility than that, especially Bruno. But if you hear that last riff Andy sings on the fade of Leave the Door, it’s so smooth, maybe because it’s in his lower range. He also talked about how Bruno pushed him vocally on this project, & gotta say, compared to previous work, Andy is definitely bringin his vocal game next level on this project in particular, on this song & Blast Off. Bruno? Well, he lives up to his planetary stage name, Mars, cause thas where dat brotha came from on this track. But great singers with smooth voices who could also be powerful come to mind, because they could go hard & dip into rasp when needed. Jackie Wilson, Stevie, Donny Hathaway & even Smokey, come to mind, but the one most relatable to Bruno I think is Sam Cooke. All those love songs he sang so smooth with perfect intonation, & then here comes this intro with strings & the band orchestra stops. Sam belts ‘I Was Borrrrrnn by a river’, for A Change Is Gonna Cone. I hadn’t heard him do that on any other song, but you hear the rasp clearly there. He probably did it a lot singin on the church tours. Anyway their flexibility is one of many elements that makes the whole album so enjoyable Great remarks & reaction. 👍

  • That’s actually Anderson opening up the song! He’s been talking about in interviews how Bruno pushed him vocally to take his voice to places he never thought it could go. Bruno also encouraged him to stop smoking so his voice could do those things & go to those places!

    • In this case, I feel like anderson's smoking helped his voice out lol. He has a raspiness in his voice that's probably due to him smoking, but it most definitely helps out in contrast to Bruno's voice. I don't advocate smoking, but in this case, it helped out haha edit: holy shit, he actually touches up on this at like 6:50 loool! i wrote this comment before that part lmao

  • This song will literally make a grown man cry period, this is what regret sounds like, in the most straightforward way possible period and emotionally grabs you by the throat. And it doesn't matter if the person you lost was a girlfriend, significant other, wife. This song explains the darkness of that moment and the aftermath in a way that is very understandable especially if you've gone through it yourself

  • The Apple Music interview has been mentioned before, the insights into the songs from that interview are golden. Especially for this song. Bruno presents the the song to Anderson and say whatcha think. Anderson says it's trash. They work on it until Bruno thinks they might just have a song, that's after Anderson sets the pace from behind the drums. Bruno being the perfectionist he is thinks it needs a little something more, something special and he dials Babyface and tells him to come over. The magic happens and we are gifted with perfection! ❤ Anderson's drumming on this track are pure 🔥 As strong and important as the vocals IMO. Thank you for another fun informative review!

  • God, what a beautiful song. Like you mentioned, they’re really tipping their hats to the greats on this record. From my perspective, Put On A Smile truly reminds me of In the Rain by The Dramatics. The somber tone, the rain effects, the instrumentation and keys are similar, but the key change was reminiscent of Maybe Tomorrow by The Jackson 5! But this one has the most emotional vocal performances on the album from Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak for sure, especially Bruno. God, that note that they cut the music around was absolutely sublime. This kinda reminds me of the emotions Bruno tapped into on his earliest material like Talking to the Moon. Wow, wow, wow to Anderson Paak’s drums and D’Mile on piano/bass. Bootsy sets the tone very nicely too with that intro, it kinda functions as a response to the previous track: Smokin Out The Window. In that song, they talked about the toxicity in their relationship, but now they’re begging for that person back because there still is love there in Put On A Smile. This is Top 3 on the album, easy. Thank you, Howie, for helping to put this little series together. I can’t wait for 777 tomorrow, that’s some Funk we all need after such an emotional and Soulful track. Great and informative video on the keys once again 🔥

  • Woooo! 5 course meal is right. In terms of a sound, it's a wonderful distinct sound (to me) and still an homage to the RnB roots that I think you hit the nail on the head with on the Smoking Out The Window reaction that we really needed this kind of album this year. This song has me feeling like I need to make some apologies on the phone 😅 Specifically this song, the release from Bruno's Money Notes hit an emotional thread similar but opposite to what I felt from Lorna Shore's To the Hellfire lol. Thanks for bringing this to me because I definitely not would have heard it otherwise! I appreciate the series, David and Howie! Love the vids :)

  • This song reminds me of Donnie Hathaway's "A Song for You". Not just the chords, the lyrics, the passion, but all the way down to the album cover. Silk Sonic does a fantastic job of encapsulating '70's soul.

  • This song is a masterclass in writing and composing a song about letting someone go. It's perfectly arranged in a way that you slowly feel them singing her soul out of their body and then singing its ascension into the heavens (or descent into hell, if it's the same girl from Smokin' Out The Window). That key change/modulation in the bridge transforms it from a purely sulk song into a song about true love being the ability to let someone go.
