How would dinosaurs survive on and adapt to an alien world? Join Vividen and Madly Mesozoic as they analyze Spinosaurus aegyptiacus' chances of survival on James Cameron's Pandora. Would Spinosaurus be able to handle the alien predators and environment? How could it evolve to gain a foothold on the alien moon of Pandora?

  • What are your thoughts on these assumptions? 1) They would likely evolve to be larger due to no pressures other than the lack of gravity. 2) They seem to be MUCH denser and more momentous than many prey species. Their ability to both wrestle and slam into their prey would be dramatically enhanced. Even though it seems considerably less large volume-wise than a titanothere, spinosaurus weighs about the same as as a titanothere - 11 tons. 3) They would likely instantly find themselves better adapted to land, given they suddenly lost a boatload of weight. 4) They would be significantly faster given their reduced weight. 5) I wonder whether their growth rate would accelerate. It's not unheard of in dinosaurs. Perhaps the viperwolf's pressure would force a shortened spinosaur childhood. 6) I suspect predator-pressure would cause the adoption of young defence. It's known in many other archosaurs, even more basal ones such as crocodilians, and in extant avian dinosaurs.

    • 5. Maybe true. Although spinosaurus baby can avoid viperwolf and other land dwelling predator by simply dive or living in weed choked swamp that almost unreachable for terestrial animals. Although they still must avoid large "fish" and other water dwelling predators which can be their future diet if the spinosauruses can reaching adulthood

  • I love the final variant because it definitely reminds me of how we all use to see Spino back during the days of JP3 This massive hulking predator that rules the place it calls home. Using its sizes and claws to get its way. It also reminds me of this kinda jokey picture of a Spino where its sail was pictured more like a hump with muscles that let it use its massive jaws to pick up and yeet smaller dinos While a jokey idea for our Spino For the Pandora plains Spino. Yeah I can picture it just yeeting something that annoys it. Least Pandora is glad its a normal Spino that arrives. If it was the Monsters Resurrected Spino even Thanators would run the opposite direction.

  • I had a similar idea to this except instead of avatar I thought of actually Peter Jackson’s skull island. There is already a (possible) spinosaurid but I’m thinking of adding something else to the mix. My idea is that during the tamer eras of skull island spinosaurus traveled to the island and found it comfy and eventually blah blah blah science science science yada yada yada evolved into a water-dwelling, wading, kelp-covered, fish-eating, long clawed killer of death. I feel like maybe Spinosaurus could possibly evolve to have a similar lifestyle of a crocodile except ambushing relatively small game instead of large and also like a heron except when hunting fish it pierced with its long sharp claws instead of mouth (which is still useful for fishing) and that the futuristic spinosaurus camouflages in kelp or grows kelp (or has derived scales that resemble kelp) on its own body as a natural camouflage. And maybe the sail can be adapted to look and feel more wood-like to further hide it while also keeping its iconic look. Considering this futuristic look on skull island spino I can imagine the damage this vice grip jaws and deadly claws can do or how much of an intimidation buff spinosaurus would be getting. Especially against interactions between Vastatosaurus! I love my imagination and speculative zoology

  • Excellent spec-evo video. Given their characteristics, I don't see those three evolutions as all being of Spinosaurus, but as evolutions of Baryonyx or Irritator, Spinosaurus, and Suchomimus respectively. It would make much more sense that a relatively small, tunneling Death Swarm could have evolved from a smaller and sail-less spinosaur like Baryonyx/Irritator, while Suchomimus, being larger and still capable on land, has a far greater opportunity of evolving into a Great Claw, all the while Spinosaurus itself could easily become more aquatic and evolve into a Shallow Cut. This way I'd think would involve less evolutionary leaps for Spino as we know it now than if it suddenly converged back into a fully terrestrial therapod, much less subterranean and converging on mole rats.

  • To be fr, the Death Swarm despite being the weirdest and most “religious” (connected to Eywa) is perhaps the most broken and dangerous of the spinous. A queen who is connected to both her swarm and Eywa herself which allows her to map out areas and locations of enemies at all times. Along with her army of venomous soldiers who can tunnel. What is also probably the most creepy part is that the queen could probably use her tendrils to forcefully connect with Na’vi and see through their thoughts and memories (own head cannon but probably possible)

If you do plan on making another, I would like to see a dinosaur like the Allosaurus or perhaps instead of using another theropod something like a Diplodocus and see how they would evolve on Pandora. And possibly how they would coexist with the already-evolved Spinosaur variants if you want to take it in that direction. Also to answer your question on what the Spino variant was my favorite would have to be the Shallowcut, both design-wise and the fact that it stayed true to what the Spinosuars is.
