  • Does he have the most beautiful smile ever? No wonder she fell in love with him! And he is so beautiful inside... a beautiful and loving heart, despite all the troubles he had.

  • Ten years trapped in his own body. Ten years in group homes witnessing abuse or being abused himself. Ten years listening in on what people would say when they didn't think others could hear... and yet I see nothing but kindness in the mans eyes. On the very rare chance that I ever meet him I think I'll ask him how he managed to remain so positive.

    • While this situation is probably not unique to him in the sense it’s happened to others too, it’s not like most of the time it’s the same for everyone else. Most people who are in a vegetative state have no brain activity at all, which tells us they can’t hear or probably see around them. He did have brainwave activity and that’s what made it possible to notice he was still “in there”.

    • I have autism and was diagnosed 3 years ago at 13. Although my diagnosed made my parents more patient with me, it also made them start treating me like a child. Like I’m 16 now but my parents still treat me like a kid. I’m able to make my own decisions and am able to look after myself just like I was able to before I was diagnosed but now I have the label of “autism” they think I’m less than. I’ve tales to my mum about it but she still does it subconsciously and I’ve tried bringing it up again and she said she doesn’t do it anymore and that she let me do the stuff she wasn’t letting me do before but I can tell she still sees me as a little kid. Like there are some things I struggle with but they shouldn’t be deciding what those things are for me, they should let me decide what I’m capable of. Sometimes something that seems hard I can do easily while something that seems easy is hard for me and idk why that is but that happens. My parents think because I can’t do the easy thing then I can’t possibly do anything harder than that. Like I know I couldn’t get a job right now, I think it would be very stressful for me with the new environment, I think I still need like a education environment and not a working environment but I also want to move to Japan by myself in a few years and I know I can do that. Sorry for the rant. Your comment just made me think about it all and it got me worked up.

  • Honestly in the mother's defense, I would think after 12 years of "hoping" he would come back to normal, she wouldn't want to keep her child in a vegetative state for the rest of his life, which is why she said that. Now I'm not saying that it was the right thing to say obviously, but when you have no clue that your child was able to understand for over a decade, you kinda lose faith.

I've seen a woman that has lived like that for the last 35+ years in my late dads care home. A bad reaction to anaesthetic caused her state. Extremely sad

  • This might be of shock but I used to work at a care home for the disabled and the disabled elderly. There is 100% abuse going on behind people's backs and really nothing gets done about it. When I worked there for the 2 months I really tried to give my patients a good day. If youre worried a loved one is getting abused, check their nuckles. the other caregivers would "accidentally" push patients hands into door ways. If anything it taught me to take care of your own because others are way more cruel.

  • I know EXACTLY how he felt! Except my experience was shorter. I caught a very rare form of encephalitis at 15 and woke up completely paralyzed. The first two months in ICU I was completely paralyzed on a ventilator and unable to open my eyes but could hear everything when I wasn't doped to the gills, I had to listen to the doctors tell my parents that I had very little chance of living and to "prepare" themselves for my death. I was finally able to open my eyes and communicate by blinking but spent another 2 months in the ICU and 6 more months getting me stable enough to go home and it took 2&1/2 years for me to learn how to crawl walk write basically everything all over again which they said wouldn't happen. You cannot describe what that full paralysis feels like because unless you have experienced it first hand your mind just can't comprehend it.The best way I have figured out how to describe it to shrinks, friends and family is I just have them lie down on a couch,bed,it just kick back in a recliner with their hands at their side and then I use some strands of hair or string to drag across their face and tell them to not scratch or move as the itching intensives and to remember that I couldn't scratch my face or even tell someone to scratch it, just got to lay there and take it while screaming inside your mind.Anyone who has taken opiates knows one of the main side effects is itching, well they had me on a heavy cocktail and it felt like a thousand ants crawling over my face and I could do absolutely nothing about it, just laid there screaming inside...so try and wrap your brain around that!

  • Very strange. It is taught in nursing school that even comatose people can hear. One of my clients had anoxic brain damage. I made it a point to speak to him as if he could hear and understand. He was wheelchair bound and had a feeding tube. One day I made a joke and he responded with strained but very purposeful and loud laughter. HE WAS IN THERE! His mother had told me he was all there but I didn't believe her. It was a great lesson.

    • What people need to learn on KZhead is some people dislike videos like these because it's sad to them, if anything it makes sense to them to dislike a video about someone who had this happen instead of liking it... Why are some people so ignorant?

      @MoisterChief@MoisterChief7 жыл бұрын
    • The dislike and like buttons were meant to determine the quality or accuracy of a video, not the protest of genera. Don't call a majority ignorant because you fail to grasp common knowledge.

      @eaxlostudios4521@eaxlostudios45217 жыл бұрын
    • ^ Clearly you have failed to understand my comment. I was simply stating not everyone dislikes videos for the same reason and people can be ignorant by accusing others for disliking videos because they think they are bad people. I never once stated that the like and dislike button wasn't made for those reasons you said so you have no right to say I have failed to grasp common knowledge when you are the one not understanding my comment. I was stating people can be ignorant (Kinda like you not understanding my comment.) and accuse others for disliking things for a completely different reason.

His story says a lot about the people who hurt him, but also about the people who helped him. • Well it was 28 years ago, but I'm quite sure that technology was still decent enough then. I think the issue was that it didn't come up. South Africa -or at least his hospital(s)- might have had some poor medical practices compared to Europe or USA. Actually I think another thing might be that he was in a coma or pseudo-coma early on, and it's just that they didn't continually test him in order to realize that he came out of it.

    • +Nerve Damage I'm guessing he has conversion disorder. He was never shown to have an organic neurological disorder. Conversion disorder is a neuropsychiatric disease where the subconscious mind takes over the conscious mind, usually due to psychological trauma. It can cause people to have anything from seizures to paralysis. It can mimic epilepsy, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, MS, coma, etc. I have this disease. It causes me to have seizures all the time. My seizures rob my ability to speak, during and after a seizure. I went up to an hour not being able to speak once. I could hear everything people say, but I could not respond. My mouth won't make meaningful movements to produce speech. There is no cure for the disease, but it can go away on it's own in half of cases. It explains why he suddenly is coming back and they never found a physical cause. Conversion disorder accounts for more than a 1/5ths of people who go to the neurologist for seizures and other neurological symptoms.
