You have a drain plug. 09:21, Below the "u" in transomtuffner. That is the drain for that upper area. The plug in there needs to be pulled out and put in the proper place in the bilge drain. Can't help on that trailer though!

Cleetus u prolly won't read this but here's some driving tips: trim down all the way to plane, full throttle to plane and let off once the bow falls, trim up about 4 seconds after plane for neutral trim, when you hit it it might start chime walking you need to steer the opposite direction of where the boat leans to balance the boat, its a game of balancing it on the pad( flat surface on the keel), if it progressively chime walks more and more then simply let off, readjust trim and try again, you wanna get the bow as high out of the water for max speed and minimum drag, you do that by raising the trim, and personally I would take off the Neutral safety switch which is two yellow wires with an orange or red line so you could shift with the motor off then start it in gear to minimize wear on the lower unit, most important thing is to make smooth and small adjustments when driving, don't jerk the wheel hard when balancing and don't let off too hard or the boat will kick the transom out to the right because of torque steer. Just tryna help you out I've owned a lot of 70+ boats and driven a lot and built a lot over at our shop.

Adjust the cables and and idle. Don’t, don’t get rid of the other prop before you try it. He said 68 mph with it. It will feel like Leroy launching. You need to find the max rpm suggested for the motor, when wide open if you can’t reach it, go a pitch lower in number. Example, 21 to a 19 and try again. The pitch is like gears. It’s number of turns per foot of travel through the water. So a 17 will spin faster, launch hard like 4.10 vs a 21 pitch being like 3.08 gears. 50 is fast on the water so 68…. I think you have them beat in anything with that extra prop on.
Usually we don’t adjust any of it we start in gear and shift with motor off. Don’t need to adjust anything. Even with the idle low, the higher pitch props push so much water it will blow the gears apart eventually

It’s a 2 stroke out board only gauge for mtr would be water temp but they run on the edge of overheating normally and it has a alarm and safety shut down . I’m sure the oil injection has been removed if it hasn’t then that would be the first move I made and run premix so there would be no need for a oil level gauge but even if it is still oil injected it also has a low oil alarm and a safety shut off ( that both need to be wired through if it is removed ) so that would only leave a fuel gauge if it has a mounted onboard tank and obviously that’s not a needed gauge if you know what you are doing … so you sir are 100 precent correct start it and go no gauges are needed ! Did you here dude when Cleet first fired it ? He said it smokes some lmao yea it’s 2 stroke might want to know what you have before you take it out lol 😂 I’m sure Cleet knew !

Back Truck, boat, and trailer down the ramp.. launch the boat… Park the truck… both men get in the boat…do a small circuit lap ending at the ramp…. Retrieve the boat with the truck and trailer… time stops when the boat is out of the water again. Teamwork and Operational skills test.

I like the idea of a Le Mans start kind of boat race BUT.... these are public boat ramps and they usually have a lot of 'no wake' zones where you can't go fast until you are out a bit more. IMHO Cleetus should get a tad more on that lower + trailer winch to patch up and reinforce a few real bad spots on that trailer like that middle that is almost cracked through and that loose bolt holding those rusty leaf springs. Yikes! A little welding would go a long way. That whole area looks really rotted out and a bit unsafe for the road. Would suck to see FlaminGO not even make it to the race due to the trailer literally breaking apart. Looking forward to see what the competition brings in the $2500 challenge.

The way boat ghearboxes are designed similar to a Non synchromesh, or a motorbike gearbox without a clutch, you have to change QUICK and sharp, Dont hold it and let it grind and slowly hold more pressure, you just have to yank it in gear, it will clunk and not grind.
You sir are completely correct especially with a Mercury you are also the only one besides my self who seems to know this … guess most haven’t been around to many outboards ! Jus jerk it in gear fast and there fine !
This boat brings back memories. Back in 1968 we had a friend with 16' Allison Craft with a 150HP at the Chattanooga Water Ski Club. One of the fastest outboards in the world, at that time, and ran through the clocks at 73 mph. My father was a competitor in slalom, jump and tricks and competed at the Georgia Masters and other tournaments in TN. He decided he was going to set the unofficial inner tube record behind that boat. The local paper came out and photographed. We still have the photos and the article. You would have definitely fit right in with that crowd. By the way he wiped out and lost his glasses and it tore his cutoffs off. He was naked in the lake. That part didn't make the paper.

Exactly what I was thinking - shift cable is too much forward and not enough travel in reverse, lower idle speed. Time for McFarland welding to break out the MIG and stick some scrap metal onto that trailer as well!

i think what a lot of guys do is disconnect the safety allowing the engine to start in gear, that way they can start in reverse to back up, shut it off and shift forward and then restart. its janky but i think those big props can cause some damage if your shifting in and out of neutral a lot.

I know we’re not here watching a masters course in the use of quotations. I thought most people would understand the “buy” to be a joke.
On that boat and motor set up it’s set up like an Allison when putting it in gear you prob need to cut motor off and put in to gear and crank back up in gear that’s why it’s grinding when you put it in gear and if you keep putting in gear while running you’ll end up blowing out you clutch dogs in the lower unit but it’s your boat
What? It looks like a standard Mariner gearcase with a low water pick up and a cleaver prop, how bout a little cable adjustment. People get thrown out of boats starting them in gear.

Most people would think about how much more money they could get for the boat, this man was simply thinking about how much meth he can get for 2500 and how quick he could get the money to do so.
Low-balling others is how you afford an $85k truck...when you don't own your own race track anyway.
He didn't get low balled because he took it the guy knew he was not going to get 5 grand for that thing. Not looking like that anyway
Two things: Boat motors have an ignition interrupt switch for shifting into gear, this thing is either not working or the shift cable has way to much play and you are getting into the power on the throttle cable before its in gear. Second, trim the motor all the way down before trying to plane the boat out. This is all about angle of attack between the hull and the motor. I have never seen a boat that was designed to not start with the motor full down. Trim out once plane.
There is nothing that fancy on that old motor. The shift/throttle cables are out of time with each other, out of adjustment in general, the base timing on the engine is wrong, the dogs are rounded over or the idle is just high. It usually goes something like the engine stalls when put into gear so people start jacking with shit and end up on just cranking the idle up and beating it to death. Old Merc v6's 78-95ish, you set base timing, then you set marks for ignition advance, then you adjust the shift cable so that at the point where it is engaged into gear matches ignition advance marks together. There should be zero throttle opening at the carbs at that point, only a few degrees of advance on timing to carry the load of idling in gear. If it wont idle in gear like that the carbs need to be cleaned or compression is low.

I feel like he also needs a hydraulic jackplate and a different lower unit gearing or a prop...seems like it has plenty of power for the prop once it's rolling though. Could just be motor height too.

That is a coned XR6 gearcase and most likely a 2.5L Mercury. You need to turn the engine off, shift three gear, start it and do engine cut offs for each shift.
Shift interrupter in the control box probably not working. It cuts spark for a second as the shift is made to make life easier on the lower unit.

@@timsorensen2085 that’s not how race boats work. This isn’t a cruiser. Go up to any real racer and tell him he needs to adjust his cables cause his junk won’t shift while running and they’ll laugh you out of the parking lot.
@@78freewheeler this is not a race engine. It's an off the shelf 175 Mariner. (Mercury). Shifting them in gear is totally normal and acceptable when cables are adjusted properly and components are working properly.
Back in the 80s I had a Hydrostream Viking with a 225 Black Max custom nose cone. It would hit 85 mph… scary as hell when it starts chime walking with only about 6” of hull in the water. Have fun! It won’t be long before the motor tears up.
Cleetus, You need to either slow the idle speed, or disable the neutral to keep from blowing the gearcase up. It won't take long, if it hasn't already happened. It's just a couple turns of a screw to slow the idle speed. At the key/shifter, you need to splice the two yellow wires together to bypass the neutral switch. Then you can start in gear and save your motor. This vid is almost a week old. I hope you figured it out already. It's simple stuff, but if that gearcase blows, it might cost as much as the whole boat cost you to fix.
Trim the motor all the way down when you're coming out of the hole and start trimming up when your about on plane.

It really wasn’t that much water. As long as he brings it off plane a bit slower he’s golden and if he doesn’t it’s not enough to sink it.
You clearly know nothing about checkmates... these boats were way over built for the time. Also with a little transom bracing you could practically ha g anything off the back of these. Pretty sure this boat is 18ft and was rated at 185hp. I had an enchanter (20ft) with a 200hp and a predictor (16ft) also with a 200hp. (Was rated at 150hp). The backwash is only horrible because he got completely out of it and it's a low slung boat.
My family had a 16-foot hydrostream that had kind of the same problem, right when the backwash is about to the transom you just give it a blip of throttle to get in front of the wave, worked every time

Slalom course to see how nimble the boats are 4. Rescue mission. (Pull up a 50kg floaty thingie/doll/whatever from the water into the boat, fastest to return to shore wins) 5. Smoothness, plank with 5-6 glasses full off liquid. Run a set course, most liquid left and shortest time wins (or shortest time wins as long as X amount of liquid is left)
I had a 125 mercury on a 16’ Tahiti, a lot like that one but heavier. I always had to gas it when slowing down so the backwash wouldn’t go over the top, kinda like surfing a little then slow the rest of the way down. Nice find, mine went 55 mph and yours looked faster than that! Also square up to the big waves when crossing and then turn back to the way you were going, but you guys probably already know that.
