Lyrics
For Richard Swift
For John and Bill
For every gift lifted far before its will
Judee and Smith
For Berman too
I’ve met the myth hanging heavy over you
I loved you long
You rose to go
Beneath you, songs, perfect angels in the snow
So time to stage
Forget reserve
The type of great coronation you deserve
I’m going out for a weekend
I’m gonna borrow a Martin or Gibson
With Either/Or and The Hex for my Bookends
Carrying every text that you’ve given
I’m gonna swim for a week in
Warm American Water with dear friends
Swimming high on a lea in an eden
Running all of the leads you’ve been leaving
I’m overmatched (For Arthur Russell)
I’m half as wise (Duncan and Curtis)
If this is flat, brother I apologize (Jimi and David / For Nick and Otis)
No one alone (For Bell and Buckley)
Can leave the cave (Marvin and Adam)
And all you’ve loaned won’t be kept inside a grave (For Arthur Russell / For Arthur Russell)
I’m gonna swim for a week in
Warm American Water with dear friends
Just intending that I would delight them
Swimming high on a lea in an eden
So I dream
So I dream
I’m gonna swim for a week in
Warm American Water with dear friends
Swimming high on a lea in an eden
Running all of the leads you’ve been leaving
And in your rarified air I feel sunblind
I’m looking up at you there high in my mind
Only way that I made it for a long time
But I’m loud and alive, singing you all night
Warm American Water

    • For me it's because that moment calls back to early Fleet Foxes when their sound had more of a pop/folk style. This whole album is like a welcome return to every sound they've explored since their first EP.

    • excuse me, can you tell me what this particular sentence actually means? I'm trying to translate it to my native language but it's being difficult. Also with the "I feel sunblind" (am I supposed to translate it literally?! Coz Sunblind is that type of curtain that blocks the sun)

      @danash2510@danash25103 жыл бұрын
    • @@danash2510 Myths are false or exaggerated ideas about someone or something. If someone created a myth about you, perhaps they had created ideas in their mind about your history, beliefs, abilities, or circumstances that were not entirely based on factual evidence, and shared that information with others until those ideas became widely believed, for better or for worse. Hanging heavy would be like carrying a heavy load, but in an emotional context, something is weighing down on you heavily. To fully understand the context of the sentence in this song, you need to read about the life of the artist he was referring to, David Berman. Think of sunblind as looking at the sun and having trouble seeing because of the brightness of the sun, perhaps you had to squint your eyes because of it. In this context of this song though, think of light as the legacy of his friends and role models he looked up to shining brightly.

  • Such a beautiful song, such a gorgeous poem, really. The “warm American water” metaphor is beautifully used, not only as an elegiac nod to American musicians, but the listener finds themselves caught up in the warm, gentle currents of that river as well. And that ending (“I am loud and alive, singing you all night”) is majestic, respectful of the dead, carrying on the music.

  • (I think) these are the artists paid tribute in this gorgeous song: Richard Swift, John Prine, Judee Sill, Elliott Smith, David Berman, Arthur Russell, Duncan Browne, Ian Curtis, Jimi Hendrix, Nick Drake, Otis Redding, Chris Bell, Jeff and/or Tim Buckley, Marvin Gaye, and Adam Schlesinger. But who is "Bill"?
