I think the only reason seeing western tanks destroyed comes as a shock to anyone, is that until now, they've exclusively fought in a environment devoid of modern anti tank weapons, actual trained personnel and enemy air cover. We got used to seeing them fight in places like Iraq where all the other aspects utterly dominated making for a perfect situation for these tanks to fight in.
Leopards and abrams were lost in Syria and iraq respectively
Mostly due to propaganda, not many Challengers were used but even against poorly armed and equipped guerillas NATO tanks burned. More likely they will simply paint this as Ukrainian incompetence and continue pretending their technology is perfect.
No it’s because stupid pro-Ukrainians were drooling and sperging out about the “game changing wonder weapon western tanks that will destroy Russian armor” lmao
@@ALV694 Those had armor that was radically outdated compared to the present, and the crews constantly broke the blowout panels.
Sharpened 🥭
I never knew that Challenger 2 didn’t have blowout panel.
Challenger 2 uses 2 piece ammunition, the Charge bags are stored in the hull in those protective bins, while the penetrators are stored in the turret, i believe this is a big design floor, we should have stored the penetrators in the hull and the charge bags in the turret in blowout panels
They are very old designs, its a grandpa that has been kept in service with updates, a lot of it still dates back to Challenger 1s
This is some serious flaw against current drone-centric warfare
@@V3lka Considering the challenger was originally designed for hull down operations, sitting behind ditches/inclines with only the turret exposed, it kinda makes sense why they'd have the charges stored in the hull, back when drones were relatively new and the biggest fear was fighting hordes of T-72s.

Damn, heard a report from iraq that this tank survived 70 RPG hits and front only was penetrated. Still people called it the most protected tank. Now it has seen real action and outcome is different
To be fair, surviving those RPG's was probably a lot easier. Basic HEAT or HE warheads fired from that aren't that powerful, especially for a tank like this one. Knowing most tank fights with western MBT's this may have been ambushed by artillery or heavier AT weapons. At the end of the day, Anti-Tank weapons are called that for a damn good reason.
70?! Not buying that. It was probably 7
@@axmat3436, I mean it was a fairly well documented incident, but I guess going "Nuh uh!" is a fairly standard rebuttal nowadays.
Probably with older RPG-7s. But this one in Ukraine, no one knows how or what it got hit with. Could be Kornet, could be KA-52, mines with artillery strike follow up, or lancets.
Russian tank also had that moment. Either ATGM was fired too close (eg: from windows just above the tank) so the warhead didn't activate, or soldier fired it without clear sight (like between houses) and the ammunition hit ERA that reduce its penetration or just glance off due to armour angle.
Damn those washing machine chips guided tactical shovels!
Soviet era tanks have the excuse that they weight much less and have a smaller profile but so what is the excuse for the challanger 2 tanks for not having blow out pannels? My only unprofesional observation is that they prefered crew comfert over safty by having more room inside the tank.
Chieftain to the Challenger two used two-piece ammunition which might be the case for not adding blow-out panels. It might be that the charge bins are enough to delay- a premature cook-off of the ammo thus having a higher chance of the crew bailing out in which Soviet crews do not have.
Obviously it's because the tea kettle takes up too much room
Challies are just Chieftains dressed as modern tanks , they are still not using smoothbore gun and they use two stage ammo
Goes to show that no weapon is indestructible or immune to enemy fire in the right circumstances. With so much military might, why the US got their arses kicked in Vietnam.. Took them years to make much progress in some many other theatres of conflict. Duty to advancements of tech, they have superiority in the air... The moment they get boots on the ground, the situation becomes distinctly different. And after many decades, it goes to show defensive lines, mine fields, traps with artillery still holds an edge over territorial battles.

It beat many many farmers with many many RPGs and an ATGM thank you. Also it wasn't TES so its not how Britian sets the tank up to be used. Ukrainian loss, not a British one. Really no big deal at the end of the day.
No tank can survive a direct hit from the top by an artillery shell The tank was tracked, and hit with an arty shell as it was immobile and abandoned. The crew survived. The Challenger 2 has fared much better with direct hits in combat to it's armoured segments, all except the top...which is almost never armoured very well...because it's rare to get hit up there
It was never claimed to be invincible, a fact was put forward often, that it had never been destroyed. Challengers have take MILAN rockets, RPGs, mines, you name it, it's eaten one before, the armour is excellent, but like all vehicles there are weaknesses, and it was inevitable that they would lead one day to the destruction of one. The fact is, the Leopards have been getting fucking minced, the Chally's have not, even when you account for their lesser prevalence. People like to hate on the Challenger because of the mythos around it, and it's nation of origin, but the facts are that if nothing at all, they are incredibly tough nuts to crack.

It's so frustrating how one of the big focuses of the Challenger 2 programme was cutting costs and only including what was absolutely necessary. No blowout panels, outdated rifled cannon with two-piece ammunition (because the UK had already been using that), barely any lower front plate protection.
Part of this was also the doctrine adopted by the British army at the time, which is significantly different to modern Ukranian doctrine. The Challenger was always meant for a long range role, boasting an accurate gun, FCS and working from a hull-down position. A lot of these drawbacks you mentioned are significantly lessened once you take this into account.
The rifled gun is less effective as an antitank gun, true, but MORE effective as self-propelled artillery (more accurate at longer range, can use squash head against masonry). It's a serious disadvantage for the purpose for which it was designed (picking off T72s on the North German plain) but is actually an advantage for trench warfare like this.
@@tyrbaan7295 You're right. The Challenger 2 programme was capable in the cold war doctrine for all the reasons you pointed it out. But that was the bare minimum for the time and didn't leave much room for a changing doctrine. In contrast, comparable NATO tanks of the era like Leopard 2 (designed to serve in a similar theatre) have adapted better to changing doctrines. If it hadn't been for such a tight budget, I think they could've made Challenger 2 more adaptable to different conditions. After all, the UK was part of the Korean war a few decades prior where they had to go on the offensive in combined arms operations.
It hasn't been destroyed. It is just resting.
The high loss rate of armoured vehicles simply shows how effective reconnaissance and anti-tank operations have become. Drones, portable anti-tank weapons and special artillery ammunition raise the fundamental question of whether tanks are really still the main weapon in a modern battle, regardless of the side.
There is not really a "main weapon". Artillery comes closest to it and this was always the case, but at the end of the day there needs to be a combination.
Anti-tank weapons have always been effective at doing what they are meant to do, this was true even in WW2

The ammo stowage in the Challenger is supposed to be surrounded by water to reduce the risk of a cook-off. How well it works in practice... 😢
It's only meant to delay cookoff and act as spall liner.
Hell, it was even tested out back in ww2 that using wet ammo storage does not reduce the risk of a cook-off.
It's possible that the crew got away. But there's not enough information for saying this. Also when a tank is hit directly by artillery no measure is sufficient. But it's also possible that the system worked as intended. As you said, it's meant to delay it. Not stop it. We can only hope that the crew got away.
@@errornamenotfound2513so why it worked so well than for Shermans?
Its not just wet storage its armoured wet storage were its protected against fragments generated by apfsds, heat or hesh not direct hits. In the video we don't know if the fire was from direct hit or from fragments. If former then how safe the crew is difficult to say if latter than if the crew followed the SOP of only opening ammo storage which is needed than they would be safe and had gotten enough time to bail out. In a friendly fire and in a cannon malfunction cases, the ammo inside armored wet bins found to be perfectly fine even when fire has swept through everything. In friendly fire case the hesh hit the turret cupola which poured hot fragments inside causing fire with ammo outside the armoured bin.

But why? CNN promised me these tanks are invincible! At least old soviet Russian tanks are able to capture a landmass the size of Portugal and an entire sea, while these things can't even make it to the fronline before getting wrecked and are twice as expensive!. Now I want a refund.

Any reason why nobody is mocking the cope cage on the Challenger endlessly like they mocked the russian cope cages?
Because most keyboard warriors and the whole media coverage are pro-ukraine. I for one ain't on board in that bandwagon, especially knowing for a fact that these same ppl were awfully quiet when Israel invaded Palestine. And fun fact, Ukraine supported Israel's action (they cheered on, not sending actual support because papa murica had that covered). Another reason not to support this hypocrisy, I'd say they had it coming. BUT that doesn't mean I support Russia either. I wish ppl understand that not taking side is an option, not everything has to be black-and-white especially when neither of both sides are saints 🤷♂
Because cope cages had thick angle iron construction, while recent developments have anti-drone netting. Ukraine never used the "cope" construction.
One was for Javelins and would have done nothing to stop them, one is for drones and had anti-deone netting which would realistically work.

@@synthilein they are several times cheaper to build and run. so, if the end product is the same why pay extra.
@@dhanu_4539 it isn't the same. The overall survivability, optronics and ergonomy is better in western tanks. @@_lo8241And Same with Ukranian loses on BMPs and Their own tanks, its too common.
Dont forget the "It will be back in service within a week" 🤣
At it makes it even more ironic considering that the crew definitely didn’t survive this Chally’s destruction.
We've seen it countless times; Ukranians take military vehicles in to known-mine fields, or drive them in to ditches, they get detracked and they either abandon the vehicle (like how they did with the mostly intact leopards) or it just continually gets pelted by Anti-Tank ordinance perpetually, unable to move due to losing tracks, at that point every modern armour piece is going to get destroyed given time. The reason a Challenger 2 has not been destroyed up until this point is because no one has been dumb enough to drive one in to a mine field to get mobility killed, then consecutively hit over and over because there are no reinforcements to come aid their detracked tank.
There's also another reason. The Elite and now also NATO trained 82nd Air Assault Brigade, the only one of its kind with Challenger 2s and Strykers has only recently entered the battlefield. Its been sitting in the Reserves mostly just waiting for the moment for the main push into a broken Russian defensive line.
@@pilotman9819Apparently they took a wrong turn and pushed into the "very much intact and fully operational" Russian defensive line, instead 😂
Did you see the video on 'Forces News' channel about the Challenger training. In it they say that whilst a few of the trainees have combat experience, many of them have no military experience at all. So the crews are not even experienced tankers being cross trained but are complete beginners. How this makes sense for your best battlefield equipment is beyond me.
@@Hereford1642 You need to start somewhere. Sure, it would be better to have experienced crews, but Ukraine doesn't have this luxury!
Must agree with you - Challengers simply haven't been seen in this conflict yet, and when they are, of course there will be losses - both sides have weapons that can make mincemeat of modern armour - a huge rethink of the shape of warfare will be underway right now as this war feeds the West with information as it happens.... I think I remember some decade ago the suggestion (here in the U.K.) the idea that tanks are becoming obsolete in the modern battlefield - and back then the thought likely met with uproar - but the tank has, like all weapons systems, it's vulnerabilities, British systems included.
The Chally 2 is a descendant of the Chieftain and as such was designed to defend against mass red armour assaults and mainly from hull down positions, this is why the British decided to put the rounds in the hull. However that was 50 years ago and now the thing has to haul its arse out of a trench and drive about in the face of modern surveillance.
Tanks are made for advances and breakthroughs. They almost never fight other tanks. Using them as as a stationary gun is a waste. Why would somebody design a special tank to be dug, as you can dug a dozen usual guns instead?
Saying a main battle tank is designed for one specific thing is such copium. Mbt's are designed for all roles, of course they have to move around a lot. Front lines change. The reality is Challenger 2 is less good than other NATO tanks. All tanks can be taken out in war it's normal.
The Abrams was also designed to defend against mass red armour assaults but it's separate ammo storage and blow out panels is a more survivable design.

From what I hear news sites saying (the BBC, being my main source), it was first taken out by a mine that set some fuel on fire. The crew evacuated, and it was later hit by a lancet munition. That's likely what caused most the damage. But hey, at least it's turret still looks attached.
