Hi, here we have Bubbler Junior a DJ bubble machine. I purchased it faulty from eBay. Can it be fixed?

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.
Going from MOT inspection after fixing 798 things wrong with the world's most luxurious car to fixing a bubble machine is the most My Mate Vince thing ever and I'm here for it.
I learned this about 40 years ago from Mr. Wizard, but the magic ingredient you are missing is glycerin which supplies the additional surface tension for the bubbles in addition to the soap and water
exactly this comment as a special needs school assistant :P
I was looking for that comment .. yes glycerin makes all the difference
I owned this exact machine, it actually shoots out a lot of bubbles, the issue is the liquid you're using which doesn't have enough strength. Bubble solution is really cheap, so if you're planning on using it for birthday party in the future or some event, get the proper solution.
Thanks Mack👍
I think the real stuff has glycerin in it for added surface strength
@@kalin666 I think I opened a door of the bubble world I shouldn't have, seems people take their bubbles seriously. From my understanding glycerin is used in conjunction with polymers, it's used if your homemade bubble brew has more than one polymer, it's a good additive to combine, seems glycerin alone with dish soap and water doesn't improve anything and according to soap bubble wiki a internet myth. Production companies also use thing like ph adjusters, water conditioners, I mean they use a dozen of other ingredients. In my opinion just buy the damn solution, it's cheap.
@@kalin666 Yes, you're right. Glycerin is the magic ingredient. Adding some glycerin (but not too much) can make for bigger, more stable bubbles. I think that when you don't have any glycerin handy (I expect most of us wouldn't), sugar/honey/syrup can fill that role.
@@Dee_Just_Dee I'm guessing here, as my high school organic chemistry memories aren't that good now, but I'm thinking any long-chain water-soluble polymer should work, so a sugar syrup may well be the answer. I'm not sure, however, how that would react with a detergent such as washing-up liquid (dish soap): I suspect you would need to use soap (flakes are readily available for delicate fabrics) rather than detergent to avoid this The ratio of soap/detergent to water is also important; I expect it should be quite high, falling off with the efficacy of the solution, tho this is just a guess
“I’ll add some Fairy liquid …” (brings out the Aldi own brand liquid). Classic MMV. Keep it up Vince.
It looks like the bubble ring is going in the direction, it should be be going up and out of the solution at the front of the machine. I suspect the motor will run in both directions (because it's AC) so switching it off and on again may change the direction (like old microwave turntables used to do) you could try switching on while pushing the ring by hand to get it going in the right direction. At the moment the bubbles are generated at the back of the machine which then burst when they hit the ring at the front of the machine which is why there so few bubbles.
Indeed it will. I just checked my salvaged microwave turntable motor stash and found 2 of the same motor.
I believe washing up liquid, water and glycerin but I think "mackjeez" said it all in his comment Vince, bubble machine liquid is extremely cheap, so no need to worry about proportions if you just buy the liquid, even those big bubble makers from toy shops just use the liquid from them, they are very cheap to buy too. Another suggestion Vince, instead of using oil on the outside, like a car battery terminal, coat the whole of the outside that's rusty with a bit of Vaseline or normal car grease, this will prevent water ingress and stop any more rusting. Love the video once again Vince, a good show for all your loyal fans.Thank you for allowing us to see this fix it video and a short sojourn into your fix it life. Again many thanks Vince. I know youtube is becoming harder but your channel is a keeper Vince.
Not related to the video but a long time watcher of everything you do , Thanks to watching you open many things I’ve had the confidence to do repairs myself which has saved me so much in repair fees so it’s just a thankyou without the videos I don’t think I’d I would of tried it so cheers Vince I recently replaced a iPhone screen saving around £205 on Apple prices.
Get well soon, vince.
After 60 videos of Rolls Royce repair, this is far too technical for me Vince - I'm going to have to go and lie down now😂
It’s just reminded me of the bubble train 🚂 from Thomas and friends I bought for my daughter 15 years ago! I’m watching from Brazil nowadays thanks ever so much for your videos my mate Vince ! I hope you get well soon!
I wish you best health for you and your wife!
When mom says we have bubble juice at home
When the washing up liquid and water combo comes out, you know it's game over for bubbles
As far as I remember you need a lot of Fairy... 3 or 4 parts water to 1 part Fairy - you could also add a bit of vegetable oil to make them more stable.
It looks like the rotating hoops would be better going the other way round. Currently the hoops are emerging from the liquid at the rear, thus they are getting popped by the hoops going into the water at the front. As it's a synchronous motor, turning it off then back on, should make it rotate the other way.
Yup.
If you add some Glycerine to the water+ soap mix, you'll have better bubbles that won't pop immediately.
Washing up liquid, water...and...SUGAR!! The sugar strengthens the bubbles 😊
A good fix and some nice bubbles. Love it! Get well soon.
That motor is very similar to the ones found in countertop ice machines. They have similar fail points as well....The tray that collects the new "cubes" cracks, water gets to the spindle of the motor, its rusts up and either freezes up (from rust) or the tray continues to crack and can't connect with the spindle properly.
I’m sorry you’re ill Vince.
This will go well with the smoke machine you fixed.😊
Hey! Big love for the black hot glue sticks! I got some of those and they result in a much more clean look for any repairs that are visible. The cheap clear hot glue just ends up looking gross and murky yellowish\whitish after it's been applied. I really like the look of the black hot glue sticks. I keep them around for any bodges that will be in visible areas, especially on black items. "Rubber ducky, you're the one! You make my bath time so much fun" -Ernie or Bert, I can't remember. I think it's Ernie, 90% confidence for Ernie. Damn, the corrosion on that plug reminds me of my old garbage disposal, except all 3 pins were green like that. I'm not sure if the corrosion was what broke it or if it really couldn't handle the Drãno that said it was "garbage disposal safe" Either way, I miss that good old disposal unit, as my new apartment has none. But hey! At least my dishwasher doesn't leak like my old one did. Hope you feel better with that COVID. I feel your pain, as I've had it twice. First time was before vaccine existed, second time was after I had been vaccinated already.
Great fix Vince, they’re so simple and effective roll on summer BBQ’s 😊
Lovely bubbly! Get well soon Vince!
Hope you snd your wife get to feeling better soon. Thanks
Best thumbnail ever!
😂
Vince, "it's already getting loose!" Me, a long time viewer: 'I wonder if he's just sheared the shaft away from the armature now...'
😂
@@Mymatevince I was waiting for the "ha ha" sound you put on when you suddenly knew you'd messed up! 😂
@@catmantech 😂😂😂
Think my other suggestion/comment got deleted with me putting an external link down. You could potentially get rid of the internal AC power supply for safety and replace it with a barrel Jack and use an external AC power supply. Safer for you and your family to use then.
@@catmantechthe synchronous motor is 220-240v so that will have to be changed
I use the following recipe for my kids bubbles, place 2 teaspoons of sugar into 350ml of water then add 150ml of Fairy ( I find fairy works best ) it may work with cheaper liquids. Try this in the machine then give us a follow up video.
good video, get well soon!
I was 1.56 in video and I think it the motor or the gear that gone n I love your video as it got me into trying fix some my things
Black cylinder thing in the wiring between the 12V AC supply and the fan I'm guessing is a discrete bridge rectifier to change the supply to DC for the fan. Couldn't see the label on the fan but it would be unusual if it was 12V AC
Get well soon!
Get well soon, Vince! Lots of bubbles certainly won't hurt! -👍
Metal inserts = normal blind rivet nuts. When mounting new rivnuts, use nuts that's designed to grip thicker material and put a washer behind the plastics. Motor looks like a motor from a microwave oven.
i would have thought the spinner would have spun the other way, cuz the way it is now the bubbles are being blown at the back and hitting the front bubble holes right? so by the time the holes get to the front theres no bubble mixture left on the holes to blow
It is an AC motor that has no fixed direction. On the back of the motor it says CW/CCW. The direction depends on the moment you turn the motor on and if it is on a positive or a negative phase of the mains power.
Right-It would be nice to see a video of a proper one working to check the direction.
Great. Fairy type stuff! So much for branding (no fairies were harmed during filming).
The motor is a synchronous motor, same as used for microwave turn plates. The reason it seams to be turnkng the wrong way, is that these ac motors turn in a random direction. (Well not entirely random, but thats a long explanation)
Fairy liquid, glycerin, water. Miracle bubbles
Add nitric acid for even more fun. 😁
Petrol and some candles at the front.
Typical household items
recently the spindle motor on my ps1 (laser ) had become noisy so I used a few drops of marvel mystery oil in the hole to lubricate it and it quieted down again, working great since
Hi. Great video as always. What grinder were you using?
To increase the strength of the bubbles, try adding some glycerine- that's what's in bubble liquid, water, detergent and glycerine.
Using Aldi washing up liquid is probably why you've no bubbles lol
😂
You need to add a small amount of glycerin to the mixture for big long lasting bubbles. That's what's in commercial bubble mixture, in addition to detergent and water.
hey Vince...what kind of grinding pen was that...I need one of those! 🍺🍺
I use to sell cheap bubble machines and I can tell you there is a major difference in just dish soap and proper bubble machine fluid (contains glycerin). I use to have complaints from people trying to make their own and I had to explain, nothing wrong with machine, you just need better bubble fluid.
Try putting some glycerin in your mix Vince What you are trying for is the mix to be picked up and bridging across the shapes on the wheel. Eric E
Mix sugar in the water makes the bubbles stronger
go on do an addendum vid with the real mix bubble 150ml Fairy Original washing-up liquid. 350ml water. ya know ya want to
They do throw out a huge amount of bubbles when loaded with the right ammo.
glycerin is key mate
Vince please get better, i had covid for the first time and it knocked me down lots. Get well soon, greetings from germany.
Covid is no joke, it caused me to have a stroke which has left me permanently disabled
@@brake_4_cake Are you vaxxed?
@@daithi007 Only people of below-normal intelligence ask that.
@@daithi007 Are you dim?
What can remember we had 1 part fairy, 5 parts water and half teaspoon of powdered geletine.
You could go into the DJ business Vince and arrive at your gigs in beautiful roller 🤓
😂
That's a microwave oven motor, the one that spins the plate
you should relub the fan as well
A couple thoughts Vince, WD is not actually a lubricant (plenty of available information regarding the topic). Kerosene and a little 3in1 might have been preferable? My other thought was to drill a weep hole through the side so that the tank cant overfill and reach the motor. Great stuff as always. (a little glycerin added in that detergent will help make bubbles.)
IMO Vince used the WD40 exactly for what it is intended - loosen up rusted parts. Not as "lubricant".
@beavis6363 As a bit of a heads up, WD-40 is mainly a more refined kerosene and mineral oil mix. It also comes in a can with a handy propellant to aid with penetration. So not so different to your suggestion, except the lack of a handy pre-mixed container and propellant. It may not originally have been intended as a lubricant, but it is disingenuous to say that it has no lubricating properties. You will note though that Vince did go on to lubricate with 3 in 1. To add further confusion WD-40 now have a huge range of products including proper lubricants so the whole WD-40 thing is a pedants nightmare.
Kerosene is a bad lubricant because it evaporates in the air. I think its only use is a solvent and a flammable one at that. I don't have a chemistry degree, but am familiar with solvents and I've never heard of them being used for lubrication. They're mostly burned or used in chemical extractions, depending on the chemical and use case. Hence the definition: "able to dissolve other substances" My apologies if I'm completely wrong here, but solvent action to me is completely incompatible with lubrication. Solvents attack other compounds, so while a solvent may absorb rust (like Vince used the IPA to dislodge the rust), when the solvent dries, the rust will be left behind, which will not aid lubrication. I dunno, that's my understanding of things. I'll gladly admit I'm no expert and may be partially incorrect.
@Boogie_the_cat Yep, the solvent evaporates leaving a fine covering of the mineral oil lubricant with WD-40. This is insufficient in itself to act as a proper lubricant in a lot of cases, but the mix of solvent and lubricant is helpful to initially free up something that is stuck. This thin layer of oil can protect from corrosion, one of it’s original purposes as a water dispersant. Thus despite having some lubricating properties from the mineral oil content, WD-40 is not an appropriate alternative to proper lubrication in most circumstances, but handy to free stuff up. There’s a bit of a difference between not a lubricant, and not a suitable lubricant.
The best thing to use is Shampoo for bubbles. If you haven't got bubble solution or glycerine.
Now you're "gonna haf a wunnerful wunnerful time" with all the bubbles you can muster. iykyk 🤣
…and a one…and a two… and a…
Now you can be the English version of Don Ho! "Tiny Bubbles!" Lol
In Scotland we had a singer called Sydney Devine that did a cover of that song.
17:10 to make the bubbles stronger you can add some glycerine, here in the Netherlands they sell it at the drugs store in like little bottles.
I would've assumed the wheel spins in the opposite direction. That way the fan blows on the wands right after they come out of the solution
Fit it to the Roller !
Drill a hole just above the fill line to prevent this from happening again.
I think although i'm not entirely sure but I think there should be a small amount of glycerine in the solution, I think it gives the bubble membrane more strength...
looks like marvin from the origional tv h2g2😁
boil up sugar water and add soap works like a charm
I can’t help but think it would be better for the bubble bit to spin the other way. With the fan at the back it is blowing through the hoop as soon as it comes out the water so by the time it gets to the front there is no liquid left on the hoop?
The output shaft is supposed to move inside that bushing. You dislodged the bushing from the case, the output shaft is still stuck to the bushing.
Sorry to hear you have covid, hope you feel better soon Vince.
you need something like glycerine in the mix i saw a sesamee street thing on an xbox 360 game the kids play that explained it lol.
Sorry you got sick, also I did grab me a drink, a dr pepper and 2 cupcakes
does that now make you an official west ham fan????
1/2dl fairy, 1l water, 1tbsp glycerin
It looks like the bubble maker is spinning the wrong direction. What do you think?
them things require a thick mixture try adding corn syrup or similar to it
Direct power to motor b4 taking apart
How did you do that
How you go an laugh at your wife about getting COVID and not expect to get it yourself. Course I say that and I was the only one in fam to get 😁
that bubble maker looked very cheapy manufactured Vince
Cool different style video for you love it
Maybe you could fix a lawnmower now.....😄
I think the ring should turn the other way.
Microwave turntable motor.
"DJ Covid Kid" hahah that made me laugh more than it should have for some reason lol
Have you put some sugar in it?
Where abouts can I send my controller because my joy stick has come out
Well now you HAVE to get bubble liquid. You know, for the sake of KZhead. 😀
is it just me or does anyone else think its spinning the wrong way, the thing is spinning the bubble mixture up at the back first
That bubble mix was far too weak. Try a 50/50 mix of Fairy to Water that should make a hell of a difference.
you need to add glicerin
You need shampoo and water for the mix
Add salt
I’ve never heard of “washing up ” liquid before or fairy liquid. In American we call dish soap or just Dawn. Love the different names of items depending on where you are. Great video Vince!!
New motor is under a fiver on flea bay
Covid, what rubbish its a bloody cold
Glycerine is what you need
glycerin will make the bubbles last longer
My uncle blew bubbles at events, but lost his job because of these machines
After "fixing" a rolls royce, I'm sure any new fixes simple
Hahahah😂😂 love it
I think the loosing streak has gone now what with the ratmobile and bubble machine
