While Godzilla 1998 wasn't really much like 'Godzilla' and got negative reception (even being called Zilla by Toho), I will say that: - It had a great roar. - If it hadn't been under the name and expectations of Godzilla, it would've been a good film as a different monster. - 'Godzilla: The Series', the sequel animated series, was much more faithful to the original Godzilla and overall much better.
@theworthysoul2 жыл бұрын
The 1998 movie was the first Godzilla film I ever watched. And without any nostalgia or bias towards the old films, I will say it was a really awesome action movie. The sheer size of this monster romping through NYC blew my 16 year old mind. They could have titled it Stewart Rodzilla for all I cared
@TheWalkingRed Жыл бұрын
@@TheWalkingRed Same here. Never really watched any of the earlier godzilla films, and I always felt 1998 Godzilla was pretty badass and an interesting melding of more 'realistic' (i.e. flesh and blood and quite capable of being taken out with conventional weapons if you can hit it hard enough) with fantastical (sheer size of the thing and fire breath).
@jeremywerner9489 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I really love the film and it’s only major issue is how they handled Godzilla. If they just had him act more like how his cartoon son did then that wouldn’t be an issue.
@connorgolden411 ай бұрын
It should have been a Beast From 20,000 Fathoms remake because it has much more in common with BF2KF than Godzilla. That one small change could have changed that movie's fortunes. I was 17 and only vaguely aware of what made Godzilla "GODZILLA" when the 1998 movie came out so I didn't hate it at the time. Still don't, to be honest. It's a decent schlocky creature feature but laughable as a Godzilla movie. Godzilla DYING from being shot with four missiles is a huge facepalm. But as a Beast From 20,000 Fathoms remake it would have been remarkably faithful and probably have become a cult classic..

The 1954 roar is different from the rest, it isnt a roar that conveys respect like legendary goji or a roar that conveys aw and terror like heisei or hatred like millenium. Its a roar that is the entire suffering that nuclear warfare causes, all the pain and loss ( abet not truly all of it) japan went through, it is an otherwordly cry of pain and despair from a creature suffering every moment of its existence, all caused by three words, hiroshima and nagasaki. The best roar in my opinion is this one, not because it sounds good but because its the truest and closest to godzilla has ever gotten to its roots. Edit: before anyone says it, I know it was hydrogen bomb testing that woke up and scared the 1954 godzilla. But we can all agree Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a big part of the movies impact.
@Devonlui2 жыл бұрын
@Fred-fen Spinerir true, most people think of godzilla as something that was always there, and normally don't go deeper than the reiwa era movies, memes and reviews of older movies. Even I was sort creeped out after discovering his origin and the ramifications of his movie

Showa: The one that started it all and really the point where all Godzilla roars are measured. I admit that not all of them sound great, but all of them are iconic and easily recognizable. Heisei: This was a nice evolution of Godzilla's roar, but in a subtle way. They louder roars were more or less the same, but what I liked a lot from this era was the deeper, almost growl-like roars we got too. It really reflected this darker period of the king of the monsters 1998: Say what you will about the creature, but at least they got the roar right while also putting a slightly nuanced spin on it Millennium: Now THIS felt like the real first fresh take on the roar while being faithful to it. It was longer, deeper, and more intense than it ever has been before. Millennium Godzilla's roar was more than just a sound. It resonated with power and you could practically feel it. THIS roar to me really puts the "GOD" in Godzilla, because when Millennium Godzilla speaks, EVERYONE hears and feels it! Shin: Not gonna beat around the bush here, the roars were all reused from previous Godzillas, but the way they were implemented in the story as the monster grew and evolved were very well conceived. The first time we hear him roar, his third form, was reused from his 1954 incarnation, which is very fitting. And as he moves through the phases, his roar moves along, having Showa's in his fourth form, and we hear Heisei's roar right at the end of the movie as Godzilla was about to move into his fifth phase. So we can surmise that had he gone past this and into a 6th phase, he would have had Millennium's roar. Legendary: Just like Millennium, this is where the roar was very noticeably different. And just like Millennium, it was a well done adaptation and evolution of the roar, and even seemed to take inspiration from all the eras of Godzilla. In all, this is a roar that just about anyone, not just Godzilla fans, will recognize. It is just so iconic that to change it would almost be like changing the very character of Godzilla. Many things will change, but some will always stay the same.

I agree. I really love the film and it’s only major issue is how they handled Godzilla. If they just had him act more like how his cartoon son did then that wouldn’t be an issue.
I love that 1998 godzilla. It looks like a humongus dinosaur

@Fred-fen Spinerir true, most people think of godzilla as something that was always there, and normally don't go deeper than the reiwa era movies, memes and reviews of older movies. Even I was sort creeped out after discovering his origin and the ramifications of his movie
@Fred-fen Spinerir indeed
Many of Japan's directors from the post-war golden era had seen war. Ishiro Honda turned unimaginable horror into an enduring franchise for the world.

Gojira

Out of all of them, 1984 hits the most different for me.
I remember seeing an interview with sound designers for I think the 1998 movie. One of the sounds they put in the mix was a lawnmower housing being dragged across concrete. They used that because Toho had something similar. You can kind of hear that metallic undertone in a lot of these.
