New 2024 Mercedes CLE Coupe - Exterior OVERVIEW

The Mercedes-Benz CLE is the latest luxurious two-door coupe and convertible to grace the brand's lineup, replacing both the C-Class and E-Class coupes from yesteryear. Bigger than the C but smaller than the E, the CLE occupies a sweet spot for buyers wanting a stylish personal cruiser with ample room and comfort. We recently got behind the wheel to see if this new Benz two-door hits the mark.
Familiar Yet Fresh Styling
At first glance, the CLE has classic Mercedes coupe proportions with a long hood, sweeping greenhouse, and short rear deck. The styling is clean and elegant if a bit conservative. Up front, the CLE wears the latest Mercedes design language with piercing LED headlights and a bold grille. In profile, the car has a sleek silhouette highlighted by a character line that kicks up towards the rear. Out back, slim taillights and dual exhaust outlets provide a sophisticated finishing touch.
Posh But Plain Interior
Open the door and you're greeted by a cabin that carries over the current Mercedes design with a widescreen display, turbine-style air vents, and a minimalist control layout. Premium materials are used throughout, though cost-cutting is evident in some of the lower plastic trim. Front seat comfort and visibility are excellent. The back seats are suitable for smaller adults, making the CLE a reasonable option for occasional four-person travel - a rarity in this segment.
Effortless Performance
Our tester was the CLE 450 with Mercedes' silky-smooth 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Power routes through a 9-speed automatic and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive. The powertrain has a elastic, refined character perfectly suited for grand touring duty. Acceleration is brisk but never brutal, and the transmission is glass-smooth. A mild-hybrid system provides a torque boost off the line for improved responsiveness.
Serene Cruising Dynamics
While the chassis tuning leans heavily towards comfort over sport, the CLE nonetheless drives with a reassuring sense of stability and control at highway speeds. The suspension soaks up bumps nicely, though it can occasionally feel unsettled over rougher stretches. Steering is linear and nicely weighted without much road feel. This Mercedes excels at quiet, relaxed cruising - a sports coupe it is not. The convertible exhibits similar serene dynamics with little cowl shake over imperfect surfaces.
With its supple ride, hushed cabin, and effortless powertrains, the Mercedes-Benz CLE delivers on its promise as a luxurious personal cruiser, even if it lacks the driver involvement of competitors like the BMW 4 Series. For buyers who prioritize style and comfort over outright sportiness, this new two-door Mercedes deserves a close look.
