How Gratitude Changes Your Brain 🧠

How can you use gratitude to improve not only your mood, but your overall cognitive performance?
Gratitude is something we’ve talked about quite a bit on this show. You already know that being grateful is good for your mental health. It lowers stress and anxiety, while building resilience and deepening your relationships. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the incredible benefits to your brain health and overall cognitive performance.
I want to do something special on today’s episode. As we enter the season for giving, I want to take a moment to dive into the science behind gratitude and highlight the many ways it can improve your brain.
When you practice gratitude, it can change the molecular structure of your brain. It helps you make better decisions, achieve more, and increase productivity, all while providing you with peace of mind. And in a chaotic world, calm becomes one of the most valuable currencies. Listen in as I give you practical things you can do every day to help you grow more of the things you appreciate.

  • Gratitude is something I feel all the time. I am, at the 80s, filled with wonders how I am still in one piece physically anf mentally after so many terrible ups and downs in my life. Now every morning I walk into my garden I see amazing nature greeting me at no cost. I am blessed with beautiful and good children and grandchildren. I feel so emotionally grateful to everyone and everything!

  • I am so grateful that we are still a family if five people. My oldest son attempted suicide April 2022. Fortunately, there was a glitch in his plan that made him aware of what he was trying to do, so he didn't hurt himself. Since then I have been grateful he is still alive and I don't need anything for Christmas ; my family of five is the most valuable thing in my life.

  • I started a drawing journal 2 years ago and decided that nothing negative would be allowed. If I had gone out to eat, I might draw the restaurant logo and maybe my food. Then write who I was with and how I appreciate them. Even my parents funeral was added with good memories and gratefulness. It’s such a happy book and when getting together with friends, they always want me to bring the journal to see new things that were added. So now it makes others happy as well

Good luck to all of you And remember it's 1 ft in front of the other and I promise you'll get there.

  • I am grateful for you, Jim Kwik. I am grateful you shared your childhood story of being called the boy with the broken brain, which I shared with my child, who struggled in elementary school with learning and being severely bullied requiring medical intervention. Your inspiring story helped my child through some of the darkest moments of being bullied by a peer while blind and visually impaired and having invisible disabilities. Your story offered hope, encouragement, and motivation to keep going and not give up. My child has overcome so much because of people like you and Mel Robbins. Your words…‘Knowledge is power, learning is your superpower’ became our mantra. My child carries books everywhere we go, and hopes to share their story of overcoming blindness and trauma from bullying to inspire, encourage, and help others struggling in life. We both have a deep appreciation for those who are making a difference in our corner of the world. Thank you for sharing your story and the scientific evidence of a gratitude practice so others will start experiencing the benefits of gratitude. I have been practicing daily gratitude with my child since I became a mother. It has been the single most important daily ritual that has helped me to focus my attention and energy on the positive things through every difficult situation, diagnosis and loss. It is a ritual that I have passed to my child because it is truly transformative. 🙏

During my healing journey, I woke up feeling fatigued, depressed, and miserable. One day, I chose to change my mode and I started saying out loud some things I was grateful for. It was immediate relief! My heavy eyes lifted, I felt more energy and the heaviness from my body lightened. I was so amazed at the immediate effects of gratitude, and how it shifted my brain. It is now apart of my regime to cope with difficult days.

  • For the last several years, starting in January, my students start each class period in English writing in an online Gratitude Journal. It only takes a few minutes while I take roll. I show mine each day on my projection screen as an example. By the end of the semester, they have a pretty comprehensive list of the things they are most thankful for in their lives. The last entry of the school year is to react to the journaling experience. It is always rewarding to see how many of them are genuinely happy with what they have written and plan to continue on their own!

  • Mr Kwik I am very very grateful your channel popped up on my KZhead I know this is an old video from last year, but this is an amazing video to showcase what the effects of gratitude are. It’s sort of the same thing as the water effect in which water has memory and morphs into something absolutly stunning when it’s in gratitude it looks so amazing, and then hate it looks black murky and looks toxic, means gratitude is the winner because who doesn’t want that amazing sacred geometry in their body to help them. Thank you for making these videos

  • Thankyou for reminding me about THANKS, this used to come to me naturally and i was accused of having rose colored glasses. It warmed my heart to be reminded those rose colored glasses were an inspiration and uplifting for others. You will be healthier sharing kindness, like you said, its free!

  • Dear Jim I think your an amazing blessing to us because we never really appreciate the power our brains as you teach us. Am so grateful to you and I practise gratitude to help me be a calmer wife and mother. Sharing gratitude out loud with close family and friends is something I’ll do more. I shared with outsiders more than my close family and it’s changed my relationships with them for the better.

  • Thank you Mr. Kwik. I appreciate the wealth education and knowledge from years of schooling. There are some really great teachers out there that do not get enough credit for the work they do. Thanks to all those teachers! And thanks to those that support individuals regardless of their abilities. 😊

  • This is just a wonderful message! I'm so grateful for the chance to still better myself. Every time I thought that I slipped up again and again, I am so thankful for this present (yes it kinda sound cheesy) that I could make a choice for myself and not be overcome by external challengers. Extremely thankful for this kind of helpful videos, you don't know how this pushes me to believe in myself, take my chance and be better. Thank you!!

  • I’m grateful to have your message & insight revealed to me as I just discovered today this video. The last decade has been abnormally high in hardships! I have been more pessimistic and don’t feel like the joyful person reflecting my life. But it makes sense now because I used to be so very Grateful !! And consequently optimistic and happy. I will embrace the “THANKS” and explore your videos to inspire my journey. 😊

  • I was thinking about gratitude even before opening this video. This weekend I hosted a party and invited 100 people. 25 came. After the party, I felt sad for a minute, wondering why 75 people didn’t want to hang out with me, but I turned it around quickly and spent a few minutes considering each and every one of the 25 who did. All of them are people who love and support me! All of them are people I could call on if I need help. The more specifically I thought about the significance of each of those people, the more gratitude I had. I feel so blessed to have 25 dear friends. I was able to let go of concern for the 75 and bask in the warmth of a fun and successful evening.
