Finally: Germany & Elon Musk Reveal Their New Powerful Tank.
It seems without doubt that Elon Musk is a true revolutionizer! And so, Musk has not long ago taken on the the task of creating a supertank like no other on the planet. This idea was prompted by Russia’s aggression. The project to design the tank is being implemented jointly with a defense consortium from Germany. Such a pairing cannot help but make us picture the inevitable success of the project. Putin's army will be left with no chance of winning this war.
Note that Elon Musk's technologies have already played a significant role in Russia's war against Ukraine. In the early days of Russian aggression, Musk provided Ukraine with his satellite Internet system. And this really paid off!

  • First off, this is not a tank. It is an infantry fighting vehicle. Yes, there is a big difference. Tanks do not have 30mm auto cannons. They have as 120 or 125mm main cannon which is almost always manually reloaded.

Add armor and it becomes slow and lazy. They added the armor and then realized they needed to also beef up the transmission. They not only added tons of weight and cost but, made it much slower and unable to swim when it was combat loaded.

    • "Mass production" means tens or hundreds of thousands of units produced. "Serial production" is up to a few thousand units. Tanks are almost manually assembled, one by one. Your points number 2 and 3 are included in point number 1. You can't develop a product without prototypes, which have to constantly evolve while you're developing the manufacturing process. A lot of great features are abandoned because they can not be reliably or cheaply produced in series. It goes roughly like this: 1. Do market research and analysis, while brainstorming. 2. Brain storm, mind-map, discuss ideas. 3. create concepts, many sketches, 3d models. 4. develop a final concept, renders, create a clear project. 5. build and test prototypes. 6. change the project. 7. build and test more prototypes. 4. develop manufacturing processes while changing prototypes... all these steps could be squeezed in 5 years, depending on the size and quality of your team. And also, it's such a low volume production in the end, that you could call even the final tanks prototypes.

  • So, a lightly armored but very fast AFV will overcome high-velocity anti-tank weapons by employing maneuverabilty? I don't think so. The French Army has been pushing that concept since the end of WW2. But no other army appears lining up to follow the French lead. Can a 80 kph AFV outrun an ATGM even on roads, much less open terrain? Don't hold your breath.

Active and passive systems do not cover every spot on a target from every angle of attack, nor do they always operate as designed after days or weeks in combat. Finally, if active and passive systems are the difference between surviving a hit for slow and fast AFVs, what is the advantage of high speed and mobility vis-a-vis survivabilty?

      @randallreed9048@randallreed90482 жыл бұрын
    • It wouldn't be able to dodge a atgm, bit maybe the speed could mean the opposing soldiers don't have time to get their atgm guy in position in time between seeing it approaching and it getting in range to attack or get behind cover? Javelins have a very long range though so it seems unlikely. Perhaps this tank would be quieter than normal ones which could help.

    • I suspect that one reason Elon is involved in this project is for the alloy in the armour. I would not be surprised if the tank uses active energy weapons to destroy or detonate incoming ordinance. If it can't hit, it can't do any damage. Also, I don't know what gives you the idea that this monstrosity will be restricted to 50 kph. The Americans have been building tanks that go 100 kph for over 35 years now. And that's a heavy main battle tank. I expect this tank, with the advanced electric propulsion from Tesla will be cabable of around 200 kph. Of course, any solid information in that area would be strictly classified.

    • The concept of fast light vehicles isn't to outspeed antitank projectiles. The fast speed is meant to get the vehicle into position faster, less time spent in vulnerable positions, faster ability in breaking LOS from the threat or in the case of drones and top attack missiles able to put some cover over it. The technology to detect threats via laser warning is ancient and effective. There's newer technology such as radars that can detect other threats. Also your mention of high-velocity anti tank munitions don't really exist in any other form besides another tank cannon. Most ATGMs and rockets have a velocity of under 1000m/s. A good example being the Kornet atgm, it's old but still used even in the conflict of Ukraine. It has a speed of only 300m/s which is plenty of time for modern protection systems to detect or the crew to pop smoke grenades which is an even better advantage for the case of faster and lighter tanks. Another protection system that benefit these light and fast AFVs, old as armored conflict itself? infantry. Infantry is used to provide targets, detect/eliminate threats for the vehicle and the vehicle's higher agility allows it to get into an infantry supporting positions much quicker. Just because the fast light vehicles isn't every nations main doctrine doesn't mean they don't have vehicles in that role. The U.S. has the Stryker AGS, Bradleys, that new light tank just adobted. Germany has the PUMA and Marder IFVs. The U.K. has the Warrior. Ukrain has BMPs and whatever this new vehicle will turn out to be. This isn't WW2 anymore so the use of these lighter and faster vehicles is more relevant when coupled with modern intel and reconnaissance equipment.

One huge example of this is hyperloop, something massively hyped but became a fruitless endeavor. They didn't explain it very well but vehicles from light (Humvee-type) to heavy (Abrams M1) can employ ADS using sophisticated sensors and targeting systems to deploy plasma-based and/or projectile/explosive-based defences. The ADS detects, targets and neutralizes anti-tank munitions and drones in short order. I'm not sure about real world efficacy against all munitions but in controlled tests a Humvee fitted with early models could chop the warhead off an RPG while in flight

    • @@ujhazilaszlo5885 There are no public records of efficacy against tank shells, however, in a general sense the ADS will be able to detect and deploy against munitions including tank shells, mortars, MANPADS (portable missiles), drones and RPGs (which have small cross-sectional areas). Will it be 100% successful against artillery or tank shells? Unknown but having ADS makes survivability a lot more likely than not having ADS. It may be the case that only heavy vehicles like tanks would be able to deploy ADS capable of handing artillery and tank shells without damaging the vehicle itself, which may be an issue with light armour. What's really impressive is the ADS ability to protect against ambush. If the Russian tanks had ADS they would be able to neutralise or mitigate strikes from NLAWs and Javelins. It's hard to know exactly how far along NATO is with ADS it might be perfect already or it may only be practical in a vehicle with large stores of electrical power, such as a tank with an electric transmission (Porsche WWII, Elon Musk and Germany in 2022)

Mud and frozen terrain has haunted the Russians thus far. The same will go for any future tank. What type of tractor and trailer needs to be developed? Tanks don't win wars by themselves, modern warfare typically follows a form of Air land Battle doctrine (Something the Russians are not using effectively). That also means you don't develop one tank you develop things that are developed off a family of vehicles to promote commonality. This is where it gets have as a to replace everything your currently have with a future system is going to be expensive. Electric transmissions have their issues, namely water. One bad seal lays you low fast. Ask the Bradley developers. A lot of possible things can be developed, but at this stage it will be years before anything actually sees field testing (Practical field testing, not just some prototype). My 2 cents.

  • Would a tanks automatic defense systems be able to protect against drones capable of carpet bombing? If you need to defeat a tank, you don't have to destroy it, you just have to disable it (like damaging the engine/transmission or the tracks or destroying the weapons or disabling/killing the crew). Sure, component destruction on a tank can be repaired (sometimes in the field by the crew) but that takes time where as destroying a tank means the enemy has to replace the tank in its entirety (and trained crew), but if you only need to defeat a tank (or an entire armored column) if you keep it from moving/attacking for however long, mission accomplished. What about drone tanks? You are driving into an area when the lead tank takes an RPG to the left track and the second tank plows right through it because it was made of wood and aluminum and empty because the second tank was driving it via radio control and an FPV camera/transmitter or advanced self driving AI accepting commands from the second tank. The ambush is sprung and the armored column reacts appropriately.

    • @@flyingpizza7486 I didn't forget that point. I covered it (see above). Consider how difficult it is to disable a tank vs. destroying a tank. If all you have to do is delay a tank, even for just a few minutes, there are a variety of ways to do so (anti-tank trenches/obstacles, popping a track/road wheel, smothering the engine, obscuring the viewports/sensors, jamming the tracks, etc.). In order to defeat a tank doesn't always mean you have to destroy it, you simply have to prevent it from completing its mission objectives, be it for five minutes or permanently all depends on what tools you have at your disposal, how much time to prepare, distance between you, the tank and its objective and finally mission prevention i.e. the following scenario: evacuation will take 1/2 hour - enemy tank is 17 minutes away from evac point...best case - destroy tank or at least delay tank for a minimum of 13 minutes + 5 minutes for buffer between enemy tank and evacuation...put an rpg round on a drive wheel, molotov cocktail the engine and fling super sticky/extra smelly "mud" on drivers window, small arms fire from well protected positions will keep the tank crew inside but won't save you from the main gun so keep moving).

Also tanks are used in groups, so it is often enough to simply slow it down and UA vs Russian war and especially Leopard 2 cases are very good example both scenarios. Tanks as any other vehicles are just tools and you do not need to completely destroy or disable it to defeat the enemy.

In the UK the famous JCB company has built electric earth movers, but unfortunately they dont have the ability to work the hours required. Technology now is available, and the issue is cost, you can add four drone connected to the drivers and to the tank by wire so the never stop and keep taken 360 images around. You can add laser, frequency and other technology to stop rocket from hitting the tank. You can add multiple defend system to reduce any opportunity to attack this tank. Also you can add 3rd level which is shooting high impact low range bullet guided by radar to stop any rocket close by. You can keep add technology and more than one computers, rocket for airplane and much more. You can add extra clone take control remotely in there job to trick the enemy. So there are 100 ways you can create unbeatable equipment if you have open budget, this is not engineering not even intelligent.
