a lot of skins have eyes like that, if you mix a lot of colors you always get shades of gray, that hair is very common, so is some form of shoes. abomination of pixels is expected, but if you think about it its impossible. This actually makes a lot of sense. The eyes are visible because most skins have the eyes in the same exact place. The grey is to be expected since the average of colors will eventually result in grey (red green and blue channels are indistinguishable and thus will typically result in the same value after many averages).

I feel taking the average of all the pixels isn't the best strategy, because it will always result in some grey or browish shade. It might be better to define a limited color pallette and see how many pixels are closest to each color. The most pixels of each color in the pallette is basically the "winning" color, which is picked for the skin. Of course you could also compare every single RGB value, but that would probably give a different look to the percieved common colors. But in the end the most popular pixel colors would make up the skin, resulting in something that looks less like a blend. Could be considered the most common skin then.

It's funny how you can literally see how eyes got lower and lower over time. Steve and most skins have their eyes on the top hence the strongest color there, but some skins wanted bigger anime eyes and thus went one pixel lower, and more recently people wanted to be more anime than the already anime skins, so they put the eyes one row above the chin.

This actually makes a lot of sense. The eyes are visible because most skins have the eyes in the same exact place. The grey is to be expected since the average of colors will eventually result in grey (red green and blue channels are indistinguishable and thus will typically result in the same value after many averages).
a lot of other parts of the skin are seen in the same places as well (e.g. the shoes, and you can also sort of make out a jacket?)

I feel taking the average of all the pixels isn't the best strategy, because it will always result in some grey or browish shade. It might be better to define a limited color pallette and see how many pixels are closest to each color. The most pixels of each color in the pallette is basically the "winning" color, which is picked for the skin. Of course you could also compare every single RGB value, but that would probably give a different look to the percieved common colors. But in the end the most popular pixel colors would make up the skin, resulting in something that looks less like a blend. Could be considered the most common skin then.

It's funny how you can literally see how eyes got lower and lower over time. Steve and most skins have their eyes on the top hence the strongest color there, but some skins wanted bigger anime eyes and thus went one pixel lower, and more recently people wanted to be more anime than the already anime skins, so they put the eyes one row above the chin.
