It is getting to be too much lately
I like your plans for the garden, Ellen. And I agree about those little modular/stackable pots. They require too much attention to avoid having them dry out and the 'win-win' is you can use the dirt in them fill the raised bed. No more large gardening for me. I'm down to two grow boxes and I have three more to either sell or donate. When the time comes, you'll need someone with a strong back and strong arms to dump the dirt out of those large pots and it will be done in NO TIME!! Don't be shy about asking your family for help for a half day. Younger folks work a lot faster (and with seemingly less effort) than you or I can right now. Praying for a happy compromise between you and the association. I think it comes at an opportune time since you had plans to downsize anyway. Sleep well tonight, my friend.

I've already talked to my grandsons about helping me out and they're happy to help. I agree with you ladies this can be a nudge for me to carry out my plans to downsize anyway. I'm just going to take my time and get it done ✅👍
Lois your advice is 👍 great. Think general gardening 👨🌾 rather than getting involved with lots of tedious little pots to care for or water. That’s what stood out from your advice. Get rid of the small stackable small pots, dump the dirt in larger raised containers. And get help, get help, get help, get help. KCMary 🙏👨🌾🙏.

I had also gotten a letter from my HOA asking why I had trash on my balcony. After I wrote the angry letter in my mind, I wrote a sweet letter letting them know that there was a unexpected frost and I covered my plants . I said other things and let that person know who is concerned about my balcony. 😂 You should do the same. Thank you HOA for your concern. We are just getting out of bad weather here and my time has been limited in my garden on nice days due to doctor's appointments and the such. Of course my gardening every year is my happy place but as I get older I unfortunately am slower. So sorry I offended others by not moving quickly. As you get older one realizes that certain things bring you joy and happiness. My garden is my happy place. I have never had a letter like this before so I found it quite distressing. Please allow me time to get my Happy space organized. Please again my apologies to that person who I made angry. Anyone is welcomed in my garden. Blessings to All

I used to like to sit in the garage with the doors opened on rainy days. My garage is such a mess right now that's not happening but I'd like to get back to that. That's another project that's waiting that I'll tackle once the garden is done. I'd like to have that done by fall so I can get my car in the garage for the winter

Perhaps get the power wash asp, it really changes the look of things. I do not use many annuals, saving cost with my most loved perennials. This cuts down on a lot of work, using one or two baskets for the porch. I do plant tomato and pepper plants. I have a grow stalk for the beets and greens. I moved this garden here two years ago, so it is not yet simple as it was before. I use some lava rock to mulch in front yard so no need to mulch yearly and no weeding to speak of. My front really likes to be mow and go perennial beds. I have a large in ground garden but have made my veggie garden beds and perennial borders. I start my seeds out in the green house on heat mats.
It sounds like you're on top of things. I have mostly perennials in my front flower bed. The dogs would trample them in the back so I have to keep everything in pots.
Hi Ellen! I left the video for a minute and now I lost what I had written! Makes me crazy! I do love your garden!! My friend came over today that helps me with my computer and we talked mostly about gross income and monthly income etc. I knew all this stuff back in my collage days, but can’t keep track of that in my head anymore! Was suppose to get my toes trimmed today, but I decided to sleep through my alarm ( they really are not that bad) enjoying chatting with you ❤ Have a great night!

I can relate to your frustration. Just got my homeowners insurance cancelled because I live more than 7 miles from a Fire Station. This craziness is now going to keep me busy tomorrow calling to see what I can get. And I only have 20 days to get more insurance. Its frustrating how you can be a faithful consumer but they change the rules on you. I was anticipating another yearly rate increase as usual but not a cancellation. KInd of like your HOA, you are at their mercy. Between trying to get insured and also having to take care of my husband post surgery with physical therapy appts I'm definitely not doing much as far as flower gardening. Only concentrating on mostly vegs this year and weeding my flower beds with perennial plants. I had good luck last year with vinca and coleus in different colors and portulaca moss rose. Sorry for my rant Ellen. Like you said, It's always something. Take care.
@allisonspeer649 Oh...wow...so sorry about your house insurance issue. Mine went up $1000. Several friends live closer to wildfire area and one had an increase of $11,000!! Others were in the $4000 to $7000 range. A few were cancelled. My car ins went up $400/yr. 🙀 I hope you have good results in your search. 🙏🏻
That's terrible ladies! They're driving us into poverty. Land grabbing is a part of their plan. People won't be able to afford to keep their homes and they can grab them up for pennies on the dollar. It's disgusting.

Well it was Wednesday when I started watching your video but now it is Thursday since the clock passed over the midnight hour. Nice you were able to get in some gardening time. I saw some nice vegetable plants today at Costco. Nothing plant wise at Aldi. Didn't shop long at either as I was tired from staying up late watching livestreams from nearby colleges as the police FINALLY moved in and cleared things up some. I am about 40 miles from UCLA and glad I am not one mile closer. Got all my shopping done so no need to go anywhere until next week. Yay! 🎉 Looking forward to hearing about your garden strategy plan. 🌿🌱🍅🥕🫑
We always planted basil and marigolds in between every veggie plant to keep the bugs away .
I love the smell of basil. I still need to buy some marigolds. Maybe today.

I thought the same thing about wanting to down size anyway. It could be turned into a blessing in disguise. This downsizing business is a lot of work!

Love the garden tour. I just got 3 of the raised beds this year and was starting to put dirt in today. You are right, they take a lot of dirt. I love petunias. I try to keep up with them also but they are time consuming. I really love gladiolus too.
Yes I find petunias to be beautiful but high maintenance especially as they grow long and leggy. But I continue to buy them every year LOL! I'm just thankful that I have a lot of pots I want to downsize to fill up my raised beds because I would have to buy a lot of dirt which I don't have an inclination to haul into my backyard.
I think sometimes our hobbies can also burn us out , we probably need to stop , and then come back to it later on.

Ellen, your pink flowers in your garden are beautiful. My biggest yard work at my house are the greenery or shrubs around the front and right side of my house. I have big pruning shears and trim them. I have too many to do in one day. I get tired and my arm and shoulder gets sore, never mind my back!!🤔 My husband used an electric something or other to trim them. He always did a wonderful job! Me....I am just pleased I have a way to trim them. Our HOA doesn't march around with clip boards! Luckily! But I do my best! That is all I can do. Take care and enjoy your Friday! Blessings to you.❤
As we get older and slower and more sore with projects, we can only do the best we can and not allow other people to dictate our process. We can't allow people who like everything plain to tell us what's too much.
What difference does it make how you use or set up your garden in your yard in the back of your house?? That's why I could never live in an association. Busybody if you ask me!!!

I'm wondering, do you own any of the land outside of your home or just the home itself? If not, that's why they can tell you what to do. I have friends who live in Utah in an HOA community. She put out a yard decoration and they told her it wasn't allowed!!

I can't believe how much certain HOA's bother the owners. If its your property they should leave you alone. Seems to be that way all over the place.
This is so true. They differently run rough sod over the homeowners. KCMary. I live under the hoa rules.
It's certain people not always the HOA. I know I have experienced this.
If they owned the land I'd give them a pass, but it's on my land. I own the lot not them. I'm still waiting for a response from the person who wrote me the nastygram.
This is my opinion and I guess it's radical, but HOAs should be declared unconstitutional.

I've wondered what your HOA thought about your garden area. Unfortunately you've got so much going on it looks all jumbled and messy. Downsizing will probably be a good idea making less work for you and make the HOA happy.
I'm already in the process of downsizing the garden. I've been talking about it since April and working on it now that the weather has warmed up. I've had this garden for years and it's never been an issue. It's a new management group with new ideas. My concern isn't with making them happy.
Although your garden is nice, it does look a little messy and junky. Maybe just a lot less items, like you’re planning, will be better for you to maintain and will make it look a bit more cohesive and neater. But at the same time if you own the land I’m shocked they can tell you what to do with your yard! We each like what we like so in all honesty I feel HOA should back off
Yes we all like different things. Right now it needs work. Happens every spring. Doing a walk around the beginning of April before people can even clean up is much too early.
