The New York Times June 26, 1994
Vinny Pazienza entered the ring tonight with white stripes painted on his face and left it with blood streaming from a cut.
In between, the 31-year-old pounded out a unanimous 12-round decision over the 43-year-old Roberto Duran at the M-G-M Grand. Judge Chuck Giampa scored the middleweight bout 117-113 and Dave Moretti and Jerry Roth had it 117-112, although they all raised eyebrows by scoring the fifth round even (10-10) despite a clean knockdown by Duran.
Pazienza got up immediately and took a mandatory 8-count. Later in the round, the fighters' heads collided and Pazienza was cut above the right eye. Blood streamed from the cut for the rest of the fight, but didn't seem to bother him.
Pazienza dominated the second half of the fight as Duran tired, but admitted: "I thought I would beat him easier. I was a little off."
Duran maintained that he was the rightful victor. "If this kid's so tough, look at his face and look at me," he said. "I didn't lose the fight."
Duran, 93-10 with 65 knockouts, isn't ready to give up yet. Asked if he would consider retiring, he said: "No. I will fight."

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

The fact that he kept competing and beating naturally bigger fighters his whole career is truly amazing. Vinny Pazienza was a good and tough fighter but Duran in his prime would have destroyed him.

  • Duran always had a tendancy to embrace the night life and overindulge in food. It's no secret he'd go into training extremely overweight (in some cases over 200 lbs) and have to devote an inordinate amount of his training to losing a lot of weight fast. As a young man with his superior skills and punching power he was still able to do this and dominate the lightweight division for over 6 years. This gets more difficult in later years, not to mention when he went up in weight class almost every one of his opponents were bigger and younger than him. The fact that he still not only competed but won a few big fights in his later years is a testamin to his greatness.

I know snowflakes like you might not know what that's like, but having a life path in front of you that you're excited/in love with and that being stripped away hurts more than anything, add onto that the fact that he was told he might never walk again much less box, wanting to kill yourself thinking you'll never get to test yourself or compete in what made you love life in the first place. Duran may have been old and i agree a young Duran may have beaten Paz, but he NEVER felt/experienced something as devastating as what Paz went through. Prime Duran may have been destroyed by the same car wreck Paz went through and might have never boxed again. Heart goes a long way, not just in boxing, but in life itself, and Paz is a fucking amazing example of that. Heart of a lion

    • @@hulianjulian8627 what are you talking about? Do you realize that Duran came from a deeply impoverished background, eating out of trash cans and sleeping in the streets as a child?? Yet you question his heart, while admitting that he “probably” would’ve beat Vinny in his prime. Well, hell yes he would’ve beat him in his prime. Duran is often considered a top ten all-time great, and the greatest lightweight of all-time. So given that, why do you take offense at my statement??? Btw, you might consider me to be a “snowflake”; but I came back from such an injury when I was 18, after having emergency open-heart surgery, due to a gunshot wound. I was on life-support for a week; and my stomach, liver, diaphragm, spleen, were also torn up; because the bullet ricocheted throughout my torso. Many people thought I would never be the same. I worked my way back from that injury to not only unload trucks in the summer heat, but also to capture a Golden Gloves title. In that situation you don’t have a choice but to HAVE heart, because the consequences of giving up are way too hefty to accept. Go lecture to someone else about coming back from life-changing injuries, dude.

    • @@matsugo24 so of course it is hard to start/struggle early and then succeed later in life, i'm not denying that. Ignorance is bliss man, and having something you love taken away from you HURTS. But also try realizing your dream/the reason you feel you were put on earth and then having it stripped away from you, through injury or whatever, then having to work your way back, sometimes feeling like the situation is so serious u might never come back at all. Not at all easy either. Both are trials in life and neither would be easy to get through but people like yourself dont give any credit to Paz at all and just act as if old age was the only difficulty anybody had in this fight. Duran was a crafty vet being one of the GOATS and Paz coming off a serious/career ending neck injury and fighting Duran AND BEATING HIM not long after i feel is overlooked

Maybe you got that from some other interview. Lol. Muhammad Ali said the hardest he was hit was by Ernie Shavers. He didn't knock Ali out. Evander Holyfield said George Foreman was the hardest puncher he faced. Big George didn't knock Holyfield out either. So whatever point you're trying to make is mute. I always heard in boxing you get knocked out by the punch you don't see coming, not necessarily the hardest punch. That's what speed does. It's always good to know a little about the subject about before you comment.

    • Duran never went through a life changing accident, Duran was in a car accident but only had a couple broken ribs and a broken hand.

In his youth he never seemed to tire like he did in this fight in the latter rounds. He would punch and punch and never seemed to run out of energy. The one exception was the “ no mas “ fight in which I understand he had the flu. One of the his best fights ever was him in his prime fighting Sugar Ray the first time. • @Paisa Culo what's the point of that? I'm talking about the result. Duran very clearly won more rounds in this fight. It's unfortunate that the judges were unable to score objectively without thinking about Vinny's injury comeback, which, while heroic, has nothing to do with the scorecards.

  • I know Duran was old but Vinny Paz was crazy tough.
