    • 1: In any war, accurate information is going to be very hard to acquire, especially if you're not directly involved and close to the front line or in direct communication with the front line. Accurate loss numbers are extremely hard, and even with modern technology you can't look everywhere on the battlefield at the same time, especially not as wide a front as this one. 2: Having heard what others have said about things like the minefields of the Sorovikin line is not the same as being the one who has to fight through those minefields, you're never going to know every detail of what it's like unless you're there yourself. 3: There hasn't been a war like this in decades; Western armies have not had to fight through defensive lines like this against an opponent like Russia, and they've always had excellent air cover. I'm no expert but I'm fairly sure most militaries would struggle to get through, even the Americans, though they would probably be able to do it the fastest purely due to sheer number of troops and modern equipment they have. It's the strongest military in the world by far, because of their insane budget, would probaly not find this easy. The Ukrainian army is actually the ONLY army in the world with recent experience in offensives like this. In fact, there haven't been that many offensives like this at all since the world wars. 4: Nobody knows as much about the Ukranian military as the Ukranians themselves, and I mean that in terms of what the state of their armed forces really is at the moment after a year and a half of fighting (and for some soldiers, almost 10 years of fighting. Donbas and Crimea has been going on since 2014, let's not forget) General Sheriff understands this and is therefore saying: "I can't really make a solid prediction." I'm sure most trained generals know this, but it's easy to forget from the luxury of your armchair in a country that's not being bombed, when it's not even the troops under your command doing the fighting. Basically, he's saying: "I'm not in this war directly myself so I don't really know what the guys on the ground are dealing with;", and to me, the fact that he says that and says it fairly early on shows that he's really thought hard about what he's saying and he's doing his best to be accurate and honest. Often, openly admitting you're not sure and there's reasons why you don't have accurate information is the most honest answer. @@DannyBoy777777

It happened before: Iraq and weapons of mass destruction, Syria and Assad must go but Russians intervened and Assad stayed. Now we hear Putin must go and Ukraine is winning. Anyway, this interview would be more interesting if he tried to explain the reasons behind the careful drip drip drip approach.

    • @@blueskies7357 The only solution is for ru to dissolve, you say. The only solution to what? And why would people in ru want to dissolve their country? Oh, you've meant it's the only solution to Russian aggression? Well, if you want to understand the other side you need to look at things from their point of view. As far as I know, Russians do not perceive their own actions as aggression but, to give you just one example, as defence: like defending Russians and Russian speakers who since 2014 have been discriminated and persecuted in Ukraine so they have exercised their right to self-determination, created those breakaway republics which then asked and have been finally accepted into RU in 2022 (so not dissolving but strengthening and incorporating). So now Russians believe these new territories is RU territory and they will not stop until they take it under full control. Since Ukraine with NATO's assistance is unable to dislodge Russians, and because in this war of attrition Russians have an advantage (not to mention technological and industrial advantage) then it is just a matter of time before they complete their goal. So if it is just a matter of time and how many people will die, then if you are concerned about human lives as I am concerned, the only solution to stop the war is to not allow Ukraine to NATO and negotiate with Russians, or at least that was the only solution at the beginning of the war (in 2022). Unfortunately, since then things progressed and a price tag increased, so I don't know what else in addition will satisfy Russians but it would be very unlikely, very costly and almost impossible for them to try to occupy the entire Ukraine, after all it's a vast country, so I think they will stick to Russian-speaking regions. Paradoxically, the more West helps Ukraine the more people die and the more Ukraine gets destroyed, after it's a proxy war between US and NATO and Russia (as Russians would say they are defending RU from NATO encroachment). Anyway, this post is more than long enough so maybe I will leave any further explanations to some other time. To get a better idea of what is going on I would advice to seek information and opinions from varied, diverse and opposing sources.

I like what Biden has done in general in his role as President and I can only hope that he IS listening to our very capable military minds and he really is playing a game of 3D chess that I just cannot see. I think so, I think we're spending this time ramping up defense production and training AFU _maintenence_ personell to service our much more technological machinery and that we will see Ukraine inundated with sophisticated weaponry over the winter and spring. It takes time to ramp up a heavy equipment manufacturing segment that we've allowed greedy corporations to export to China. Seems to me that that production should stay here and it's going to take time to ship it all back. @pauljackson4075@pauljackson40758 ай бұрын
    • Not cowardice--observant of wider factors of much greater impact. Consider if Nato had arrived the day after Russia invaded. Putin, with the simple delay of communications and the swamping of videos showing Nato's arrival, would have declared Russia was being invaded without provocation by the evil West! That's 150 million russians, 400 million Europeans, 330 million Americans, 400 million Middle Easterners, etc. Get the wider issues? The pace the US, UK, Germany, France et. al., have chosen makes it dead certain there can be no rational person who can think the West attacked Russia. Not even still to this day. It is solely a one-sided offensive war coming from Russia, with Ukraine on the do-or-die defensive, by Russia's own words, including their clergy, seeking annihilation of Ukraine and removal of both the country and the people. And the military is being given the freedom to prosecute this defensive war according to the timetable that actually works in practice for the equipment and the men using it, who are doing a stellar job, but still need training and have human limits. Two years in, with F-16's arriving finally, Russia cannot generate the hysteria they are the victims of an unprovoked attack. As @john_in_phoenix above says, the equipment was bought and paid for 30 years ago, but now it needs some maintenance and an update of the electronics before they can be put on a ship. Even under all-hands-on-deck conditions, the new electronics needs to be decided on (which of the newer generations would best fit this war and can be manufactured and acquired in the timeframe (remember, only a limited quantity is actually sitting on a shelf), then the existing units have to be dusted off, put into current working condition and tested, then fitted into the tanks or planes etc., then tested that they are working correctly with all systems integration of other electronics, as well as hydraulics, etc. These are NOT simple machines, and it's not a simple oil change. This is not ride-or-die with a little AR-15 pew-pew bungie-corded to the top of a Ford Expedition romping out through the onto the battlefield through the cratered fields. It is more like Right-or-Dead. You either get it fully right before you get to the battlefield, or you are fully Dead within 30 seconds of the other side's launch. Patience for us armchair generals, grasshopper.

  • I agree with the wait and see comment. I suspect the remainder of the defense lines will not be nearly as deep with mines, and are likely to be unmanned until the Russians withdraw from the first line. Frankly I'm quite surprised at the lack of major support from the USA. We have lots of Abrams, Bradleys and F-16s sitting in storage in case a ground war should break out in Europe. Guess what, a ground war has broken out in Europe, and we have a chance to decisively defeat Russia without US casualties. What are we waiting for, what is the point of this dribble of weapons? Most of the equipment was paid for 30 years ago. Give it some maintenance and update the electronics and put them on a ship.

    • Part of the NATO agreement stops that from happening. NATO would not encroach upon WARSAW PACT countries & vice versa. The choice to join NATO has to be voted on in the country & some other hoops to jump through. I am not knowledgeable about NATO or WARSAW agreements but they still hold legal weight. Google it if you want. I have lost interest.

You can't trust Russia under Putin and you certainly can't believe a single word they say. I hope your views find resonance with politicians throughout the free world. Ukraine will continue fighting with, or without international support. They have no choice. This war is, for Ukraine, existential. If they loose the consequences will be unthinkable and we will all hang our heads in shame, anger and fear for generations to come.

Russia holding on to Eastern Ukraine is abstract to many people, and would take a talented demagogue to whip up enough anti Russian sentiment. And that is rightfully unsavory in a healthy democracy. • I absolutely respect and admire Maj. General Sir Shirreff. However, I humbly take minor issue with one of his assertions. By gifting so many of Britain's military assets to Ukraine, your country is not so much putting itself at risk by depleting military stores as it is using those military assets for exactly what they were designed to do - namely to defeat an aggressive and invasive Russia. It will be lovely to see the U.K. invest more heavily in it's defensive capabilities to be sure, but I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about not having the kit to fight off the Russians. Thank you for these excellent long-form interviews. Ms. Gerbeau is an excellent interviewer and presenter. I watch every interview at least twice. Slava Ukraini! God bless the United Kingdom for the leadership that it continues to provide! Michael from Champaign, Illinois, USA.

    • Brit here. His point was not so much that giving Ukraine our military assets is a problem, it’s that the Tory government has been consistently cutting investment everywhere over the last 15 years. You’d assume that given the current situation the Tory government would be increasing defence spending at the moment, but sadly they’ve actually just cut back spending this year. (The uk is one of the only nato countries whose spending has gone backwards). I think 80%+ of Brit’s would happily see every storm shadow missile we have sent to Ukraine. It’s just that the current government hasn’t got any plans to replace them anytime soon….
