00:00 Italian Style Introduction
The world is full of elegant and stylish gentlemen but most would agree there’s just something special about the style typified by Italian gentlemen like Marcello Mastroianni, Lino Ieluzzi, and Vittorio Gassman.
01:03 Early History of Italian Style
The Italian peninsula had dominated the fashion scene of Europe for centuries. And even after this dominance waned, the region was still known for its exceptional fabrics and craftsmanship. This history of, and devotion to, clothing excellence became a sartorial legacy that heavily impacted Italian style.
04:53 Italy and the Modern Fashion Industry
After World War II, the Italian people began the process of rebuilding their country. Clothing production would play a considerable role in this revival because Italy could leverage a massive clothing-production industry.
The rise of the great Italian fashion houses saw historic Italian style put on display to the world to rival even the influence of the Roman Empire. And the Italian appreciation for quality materials and personal flair quickly became a selling point for a gargantuan industry. Being home to so many fashion industries certainly helped Italians gain a reputation for their style.
8:19 Hollywood & Midcentury Consumer Demand
11:37 Contemporary Italian Style
The Neapolitan Suit, With ts unpadded natural shoulders, roping detailing, patch pockets, and a very trim silhouette is simply the most famous and distinctive of Italian suit styles.
Nearly every region of Italy has its own distinctive clothing styles that reflect the local realities of climate, culture, and class. Prominent examples include the → Roman Style, which follows the general form of a Neapolitan suit but with more sedate detailing
→ Milanese Style, with its strong, extended shoulder
→ Florentine Style, which combines the breadth of a Milanese suit with a rounded silhouette
16:13 Conclusion
It would have been very easy to build this video around stereotypes about Italian men. But we’ve found looking beyond the stereotypes far more enlightening. Ultimately, the exceptionalism of Italian style cannot be attributed to that famous Italian confidence alone.
17:20 Outfit Rundown
I live in a big US city. Most of the time I feel I’m the only one dressed for an occasion. No matter how fine is the place, you see men in cargo shorts, crocks and wrinkled t shirts. Ghastly.
That occurs plenty in Italy during warm weather.
I think very much like the same, but the only reason why you get negative connotations is because that chav in cargo shorts takes the mickey out of your outfit. If you ignore that and think of all the positive compliments, I would simply ignore it. More women love staring at me in certain outfits.... So I capitalise on that lol.
Its just the current trend to be sloppy and casual. I think and hope that is ending, i now see A LOT of stock of men's Dress wear in major Dept Stores, hope the tide is turning -- enough of the sweatsuit culture!
@@asacco2698 That "current trend" has been here since the late 70's
Not only have people in the US given up, but at this point, there have been several generations of Americans who do not associate attire with respect so it is hard to blame most people under the age of 40.
Ottimo lavoro, Preston! Well done and congratulations on your Italian! Sadly, nowadays new generations in Italy don't dress with classic style anymore... it's just sneakers and trap music. But some of us try to keep the good old days alive! Grazie Preston, hope you'll visit Italy soon!
Grazie per il tuo video sul balcone!
Even the casual way .. the Italian taste is unique !..
Finirà anche quella stupida moda. Te lo dico da ragazzo di 23 anni. Quella della trap è solo una moda passeggera.
@@alessandrogambino2488 no, non finisce
Man I was in Italy 4 Weeks ago. I have travelled the world quite a lot, but Italy must have been my least favorite holiday destination out of all of them. I was supposed to stay there for 3 weeks, after 2 weeks I could not take it anymore though. It was just boring. There was just nothing to do. It was extremely hot, and the only thing you could enjoy was the beach. There weren't any large discounter either. Maybe I'll give Rome and Milan a shot, but otherwise Italy was an extremely disappointing experience.
Unfortunally Stylish Italian Men are just a few minority in my country😔 Today the vast majority of italian youngsters and even more mature people, have absolutely no taste in dressing ...
exaggerated
In my experience, the reason is also societal. We were raised in an environment with no tolerance for deviation from fashion rules, especially "don'ts". Show up in a wrong color or textile match and you would be ridiculized, no matter how little or adult you are! This being said, ottimo lavoro Preston!
It's this. This is the real reason.
Exactly!
For a country that alleges to be big on individual freedom, we sure push conformity strongly here.
Italian designs are driven by emotions. you can feel this in their cars, furniture, appliances. Even a humble utilitarian typewriter was given a distinctive, sleek design (olivettis in 1960s/70s).
What does a sleek design have to do with being driven by emotion? I think they’re driven by a desire to be aesthetically pleasing with regard to their cars, clothes and furniture.
German designers - are driven by emotions. You can feel this in their cars, furniture, appliances.
@@Trash2000s - OK - you just dont get it. Dont try - you never will.
So what emotions have driven the designers of the Fiat Multipla? 🤣
Italian cars are known for being poorly made and unreliable. That includes Fiat to Ferrari.
I went to Rome on vacation four years ago. During la passeggiata they close off part of Via del Corso. There was plenty of classic style and well dressed people on display. La bella figura is definitely still a concept that matters to Italians.
Italians have always been visual, and this extends to what they wear. Italy has been the home of the Arts forever, art and music.. so, it's just a natural extension of their vision to include how they present themselves.
Bravo Preston!!! Hai pronunciato bene l'Italiano! This was very insightful, thoroughly enjoyed this video 👏
Ciao Preston! As Italian I've really appreciated this video, and, thumb up for your italian too!! :)
I love when people talk about italy, as an italian I take a lot of things for granted from food to clothing so it feels great to be appreciated for these simple yet important parts of our culture
Many years ago my photographer friend was sent to Italy on assignment from Chicago. When he came back to Chicago, he wore a classic navy blazer made in Italy. He said everyone dressed very well for the evenings. Preston, you need a tie!
I work in Central London and it can feel like the majority of Men make an effort, from a full suit to smart casual (brown pair of shoes, jeans/chinos, shirt, sports jacket and a professional looking watch). The latter pretty much my usual attire. When I travel outside of London, even if it's just outside of the central core, the attire has changed to the majority of men of all ages wearing Athleisure.
Sadly I have to say I think this is true
Stay in Central London then. Even if what you say is untrue.
My former Mexican colleagues used to say the same about the difference between London & the rest of U.K.. Watch the local news & weather as an example - people wearing black and purple in summer (!?). On the other hand, I've had Italian friends who weren't dressy at all but older ones were ( in office attire). Just as people talk faster in the large cities, clothes , etc.. have more weight.
In some fields of business, it is impractical to wear stylish and high quality clothes. I wear three-piece when I am at my office but driving around to visit production sites/lines or supervising building projects, I cannot do that. I am more dressed like a car mechanic than gentleman because of practicality.
@@jakublulek3261 For sure, sometimes we have to dress appropriately depending on the job. I work in IT, a few years back I used to be a Router and Switch Engineer, the person who had to go out on call and physically repair the hardware, so I too had to wear overalls, but these days my role has changed I, I remotely connect to these devices from the office, so I'm either smart casual or perhaps even a suit with or without a tie.
As an Italian I can wholeheartedly say thank you for this wonderful and informative video! :)
My Grandfather and Great Uncle came from Sardinia at the turn of the last century and spent years working on Panama Canal construction. Later they built highways and railroads throughout the Northeast and as far West as Iowa, including a lot of hard rock blasting in New England. I have a photograph of them on a highway crew standing next to a steam tractor and my Grandfather, the supervisor, is wearing a vest, jacket, and necktie. Much later, in the 1960s, he owned the only Lincoln automobile in our town. That's why I drive a vintage Lincoln Continental now. Great Video Preston.
nice story , if you haven`t put the pfoto in frame do so , i have a friend who collects old cars , now he is nearly ruined he also collect guitars so he goes broke and then have to sell something, but I know he had a Lincoln, he could not find a parkingplace when out in it ,
Sardegna! That’s my island! I’m writing from Cagliari right now!
Just going by the images you show, I'd say Italians are stylish for what they're NOT wearing: no baseball caps, t-shirts with decals on them or torn jeans. No hoodies, oversized necklaces or grills that spell out "CASH MONEY" in rhinestones on their teeth. Also, their pants arent hanging below their butts, their clothing isn't three sizes too big and they're not trying to "make a statement" by going against expectations. Italian culture is very big on presenting a "bella figura." One of the ways they do that is to dress stylishly. But, the concept of stylishness applies to every aspect of the lifestyle of Italians who want to present a bella figura.
I live on a seaside town in Italy...trust me things have gone baad this last few years, to the point that even wearing a shirt gets you a "why so elegant?"... Italian men are truly not so generally stilysh
Like, try anything but sneakers and people go nuts
This reminds me of California. The bar is super low for dressing because everyone wants to dress for comfort.
Agree... the people that you talked about lived in an 60s to 80s environment. People dress like hobos nowadays
People dress to suit themselves not any of you.

Probs cause the selection in the majority of places in the USA sux . And dressing nicely for men has been replaced by hoodies and tshirts. Most men Don’t even own a suit or nice dress shoes. Even a respectable men’s taylor is next to impossible to find unless you travel long distances

One of my favorite fashion channel and blogger on YT is of Italian heritage. Whenever she goes to Italy to visit family she talks about Italian fashion. For me I think it is the confidence that makes the clothes shines. Knowing what fits them correctly too.
Preston rules! Gentleman's Gazette videos are so relaxing! Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
Stellar content, gentlemen. Much appreciated!
Most of us Italians haven't got so much style. But I have, luckily! ;)
Ottimo video, Preston! Come sempre, d'altra parte!
As an Italian, I must state one of the reasons why we're so stylish: because we KNOW Italians are the best dressed men in the world, but we also know our region is the best... And we can't allow the guys from other regions to dress better than us. Also, we have two millennia and half of being stylish to uphold.
its part of the italian culture. u can go back 2000 years, the romans were very stylish
Ottimo video, che spiega anche le origini del nostro stile. I really enjoyed it
This video clears so much misunderstanding about the Italian clothing Thank you
it must be very hard for a "non Italian" to paint such a clear and precise portrait of Italian history putting it in relation to the aesthetic taste of italians: you have managed to create this portrait and for that I give you my sincere compliments. Bravissimo!
Brilliant! That was an excellent video. Very enjoyable.
Superb video Preston! Loved hearing about the history👍👍
Hey great Italian/clothing history! Thanks! This is the kind of info that really helps out figuring out where men were at in the clothing design over time!
Grazie per i complimenti from an Italian living in the beautiful south of Germany. I really enjoyed the well made video. Being fashion-impaired, I’m following your channel looking for sparks of intuition, but also to relax and enjoy a pleasant presentation 😎👍
Bravo Preston!. I love italian style. Always seems to be one step forward from the rest. Even Jonh Wick is his movie ask for an italian suit. Excellent video as usual. Cheers.

Thank you, that was informative and entertaining.
forza italia... Sicilian American here in nyc .... I look like million dollars.. with a heart that's priceless
I spent a few weeks in northern Italy back in 2015. As I read now, the average pay in Italy is around 2500 euros in 2022. Back then, in 2015, sport coats cost was around 500 euros, not a full suit, but just the jacket, and not in an expensive designer shops, but in a small town small shops. And I saw men wearing such sport coats everywhere! Locals told me that Italian men would rather spend their money on a good suit than on a vacation or a car.
That’s 2500 gross. The average net is 1600 to 1700.
That's kinda true but we buy few things that last long and make the most out of them. We don't like spending too much on vacations especially abroad since we have such beautiful places to visit nearby with little spending
Thank You So Much. I am Very Proud of My Beloved Italian heritage. This video just kick-started a New journey of style for me. Where should I start ?

The Italians and The French know how to coordinate and put themselves together.
The French wouldn't have any industry, taste or fashion to speak of if it weren't for the Italians.
@@manolokonosko2868 Thank you for your interesting input. Did you also know that the Italians and the French wouldn't have any industry, taste, or fashion to speak of if it weren't for the Visigoths? Molto Bene Preston! As an Italian American you are spot on. I learned how to dress from my late father who taught me how to dress with style! Dressing nice is in the Italian DNA! It's sad that we live in a culture in America today that men don't dress with style anymore!

I am so very grateful that all of you gents are NORMAL MEN. I can send the teenagers I work with to this channel for inspiration and they actually stand a chance of achieving similar looks by thrifting and borrowing from dad. Thank you for this!
Amen to that. I go thrifting and the MEN are in there strong just as the women.
What defines a normal man?
As a man, I find your comment negative. Women in particular have been dressed more and more masculine in recent years. Even men's hairstyles are copied by women nowadays. Many women are also becoming fatter and fatter, caring not about themselfs and becoming more unaesthetic. Better criticize your own gender first, when you are that conservative!
Sometimes I wish women would be more humble and calm like in generations before and being loyal servents to us, normal men, like it has to be!
It's not the legacy or tradition, it's just the way that men and women from Southern Europe were raised to be and that carries with itself a certain degree of nonchalance and self-confidence that is not known to cultures based on protestant work ethics
I sincerely believe the protestant work ethic was a mistake. Americas history is one long tale of brutal treatment of all too willing workers. On the pages of the history books you can see both men that have no respect for themselves and men who have no respect for others. All that matters is proving that you are worth something by working as hard as possible to ensure that the opposite is true by the end of your life. Whether that means becoming rich and cruel or poor and broken depends on your social class.
I agree I went to the Middle East and it was the same everyone enjoy dressing up, I’m Canadian and I enjoy dressing nice all the time my friends think it’s strange but what I notice in North America men think it’s strange for a man to take care of him self and care for his style, my wife is Mexican and I noticed Latino people dress great to Must be a North American thing for men to not like do dress up not saying all but for the majority
So... legacy and tradition...
I think that the white linen pocket square with a P-monogram should be promoted as a secret recognition sign for Gentleman's Gazette fans! :D
heiiiii! ooooooh! it's Avallac'h !!!! Long time no see, my friend!
Italian taste always manages to amaze, not only in the field of fashion... but there are many things that we Italians should learn from other nations... in the end we can improve each other as if it were a cultural exchange... hooray healthy globalization! thanks Preston
That was a fun video. Maybe we can do a world tour??

It looks like a bucket series from another style channel combined into one. 😁
I love seeing my name in a GG video!
May I just say you look amazing, Preston
Italians understand that appearance is everything! The outside reflects the inside. (well, maybe).
Bravo.
16:12 "Fatti mandare dalla mamma a prendere il latte" (have mom send you... to buy milk) is a Gianni Morandi evergreen song about a jelaous young man wanting to see his girlfriend (and forcing her to dump that other guy he caught walking with her holding hands OR ELSE... 😅) as excuse for her parents is that she is going out just to collect milk. That is why you see the cingy coreography with bottles 😅
Even as a kid in the mid 70s, when watching my favourite film The Italian Job, I could see the Italian actors had an effortless style about them. Rossano Brazzi is the epitome of cool at the beginning (though driving a Lambo Miura helps), with his slim jim tie and wraparound shades. Raf Vallone is the every inch the dapper Mafia boss, and even his underlings look absolutely sub-zero. I don't think we'll every have another era like the 60s for sheer coolness, in terms of fashion and design.
Great video, now I’m very intrigued on the regional fashions of Italy. Anyone know of a good resource?
its part of the italian culture. u can go back 2000 years, the romans were very stylish
Nowadays in Italy, it really depends on the region and age group. People seem more interested in style in bigger cities (Milan, Rome, Naples) and in the 40+ age group. One thing I find ubiquitous in well-dressed Italian men is the many bracelets they wear on their wrist. It kind of cheapens the look if you ask me.
beh i braccialetti danno un tocco più grintoso e moderno
@@mrripley9520 "Quando sento la parola moderno metto mano alla pistola" 😄
Concordo sui bracciali, terribili
Based on the comments, it seems the region and age of the people determine whether or not they dress this way. I’d love a more detailed video on how and why these trends affects certain areas and age groups more.
Because more developed and "young" area are more open to international trends and globalism and young people (most of them) want to dress like the rappers, trappers, tiktokers etc.
@@anotheryoutubeaccount5259 I'm Italian, I live in Italy and I'd say I know what I'm talking about. Those are imported trends.
@@anotheryoutubeaccount5259 you said '"but maybe" that is what I was saying since the start.
@@anotheryoutubeaccount5259 I'd say that this is not a "new italian fashion" or an "imported style"... the current trend with globalization is to delete any sort of regional uniqueness, and that's surely accelerated by the massive and ubiquitous presence of social media in younger generations. Today we're seeing a "global style", no more variety such as italian, english, french...
@@LorenzoSpolaor true, and there isn't the choice there used to be anyway because most stores are international franchises because the small stores couldn't compete with running expenses offered by these big corporations.
Getting well dressed is more and more seldom nowadays. Jeans tshirt and sneakers are now the global way of dressing up (not even trend anymore). Except in some higher positions but even there no more ties, jeans, casual shoes etc. Sad. But multi billion companies like Nike, Levi's, Gap and others are mainly responsible. You can't even find anymore shoes in malls or regular shoe stores, you have to go to the few refined ones. For children? Only rubber shoes. The clothing companies don't offer anymore a chance to the general population (they are considered for them as low class) a chance to get somehow well dressed all what counts is their profit. They sell super slim, skinny, tights, t-shirts, hoodies rubber shoes whatever sells the most. And worse all items are labeled for display as free advertisement (logos and names). Italy is not an exception. The stylish you see here are the invited in special events like fashion shows, nominations, etc. In the 30s to 60s it was the general population that was well dressed (at least the largest part of it)
Depends on the area then. In my city there is no sneaker store, but there are multiple normal shoe stores that sell dress shoes, boots..
That isn't true everywhere. I live in a small college town, and we still have stores where people can buy nice things. There's also the internet, which is a life-saver for those of us who need odd sizes in clothes and shoes. For example, I have wide feet and I'm short; stores don't normally carry my sizes.
you have missed something very important, attractive men will make any cloths look stylish! Along with attractive women, note that most of the stylish are usually also beautiful!
I have a friend that works in the industry and travels to Italy all the time because she is a buyer. She jokingly says Italian men are so stylish because they are still dressed by their mothers. The ones that aren't dressed by their mothers wear tight fitting jeans and gaudy label printed shirts that are two sizes too small.
Enjoy your videos as well as this history of Italians long cultivation of sartorial style, but I'm still left wondering how to do it
Can you make a vídeo about Dutch style ? I am curious about your take on it, and it is a very good idea for a video in general. Greetings

Ive been to Italy only a few months ago, Its true the men with their leather nelts, shoes and bags, watches would have to be the best dressed men in the world. Maybe started from their great archtecture, but whatever their style is impeccable, its part of their DNA.
Because Rome was center of the world 2000 years ago when most of other nations wondered thru forests living in tribes .Others still need time to catch up :)
Great video. Preston, if I may offer some feedback. That open collar looks sloppy. The collar should not lay flat but have a good raise. I see it flat on your collar, almost as if a t-shirt. Maybe a better quality shirt, or a collar suited for wearing sans tie.
The colour of your sport coat is too good.
Preston, you should leave the hair more often :) your hair doesn't look messy when its loose, but it does look better than with all the product in But its also better for your hair :) With how your hair falls, you don't need product.
