Being real takes a lot of guts and this person proved it undoubtedly. Infact his level of nervousness shows his reality and humbleness which isn't cup of tea for everyone.

It's the worst feeling when you realise that you were better than others in school days but now you have left behind and they are doing far better than you in life.
School and grades in actuality have nothing to do with success in your respective field (usually) and your mental peace. Everything I have been through school only brought me down, not lift me up. Teachers and your peers discourage you and when you act out, you get hammered. School is about obedience and herd mentality, nothing more.

When he started taking about failure, it was noticeable, he was about to crack. Could it be that he uses the sarcasm to cover up that period of his life?

True!!
Tragedy is comedy!
It takes lots of guts to talk about personal failures on a stage like that. And the almost cracking up voice made it so much more relatable. Another small point I wanted to share is that it is very easy to talk about past failures once you have become successful and no longer feel that pressure. It is clearly visible that he still thinks he has more to achieve and thats what is unique abt this speech.
