  • I just learned about this cartridge. It's a 6.5 (.264 caliber) Grendel necked down to a 6mm (.243 caliber). It uses the same AR bolt as Grendel and 7.62X39, and magazines as well. Neat!!! But I'm already invested in Grendel, and with it's ballistics sweet spot, I'll stick with it.😁 But if I were just starting, I'd love one! I've always loved the .243 cartridge! I've put a LOT of deer meat in the freezer with my .243!

I dont think you need to go long with this cartridge it peforms excellent 800 and in. Having it be 20 inches defeats the purpose of it being a intermediate cartridge. But good episode.

  • Loved the podcast. I moved to the 6 ARC in an Aero Precision M4E1, (assembled Aero upper) for a general purpose/CQB rifle and I couldn't agree more with your information. I will not be trying to make the cartridge anything it is not. I'm going to use the same powder Hornady uses (for the gas gun) and use the factory ammo as a control. I understand how to avoid bolt thrust issues. I'm getting wonderful groups and making good hits from the muzzle ouy to 600 yards. I plan on a long relationship with this rifle/barrel. I've been shooting and reloading 6MM for 4 decades in the 6MM Remington so I have a hyper velocity 6MM and I don't need to ruin a fine rifle being an idiot.

    • What powder does Hornady use? It's not Lever like a lot of people think. I've taken factory rounds apart, inspected and weighed the powder. Lever does not duplicate the factory powder even though it looks the same.

      @rustynut1967@rustynut1967 Жыл бұрын
    • @@rustynut1967 Does not duplicate the weight? what does it not duplicate? Was the load compressed? Very early on the discussion was that LeverEvolution was used but I bet not now as a recent video by Hornady suggested that it was a tiny bit faster than LeverEvolution. As far as what Hornady has posted LeverEvolution is the clear choice.

      @davidmilisock5200@davidmilisock5200 Жыл бұрын
    • @@davidmilisock5200 The factory loads are compressed. The powder looks like lever but I don't think it possibly could be. I would have to dig for my notes, it was at least 30gr, but I think even more. I do remember thinking if I loaded as much powder as they did using Lever there would be a good chance it would damage my rifle. I also took the factory powder and loaded a few rounds using the same charge weight when using Lever and the velocity was way below the same charge as Lever. A few people with more experience with reloaded than me think it is a blend of powder not available off the shelf used in the factory ammo. I mostly use Lever (28.7gr) and getting around 2680fps shooting 105's and good brass life in a 22" barrel. Varget is a little more accurate but a tad slower velocity.

I've never used the ELD-X because they can be kind of hard to find, but I imagine it will still reach out pretty well depending on barrel length

      @TheWoodsman1983@TheWoodsman1983 Жыл бұрын
    • If you're willing to invest in a set of reloading equipment, there's a MASSIVE selection of projectile weights available. The 6mm/.243 caliber is pretty ubiquitous. Once I finish my move to Oklahoma and get settled in, I'm planning on turning loose of several of my rifles - including my LR308, and replacing all of them with an 18" 6mm ARC. I've planned on running 75 grain hollow points, and 95 grain ELD-X primarily. Some time down the road, id like to get a lathe and mill my own projectiles. Even in .224. Imagine an 80 grain copper slug in 6mm with a tungsten core penetrator moving at 2800+ fps 😮

      @BuckF0eJiden@BuckF0eJiden9 ай бұрын
    • For reference, 8208 XBR from IMR in 6mm ARC will move a 70 grain pill at a blistering 3300 fps at max pressure. If you had a custom barrel turned in 26-28" with a rifle +2 gas system, there's no reason you couldn't move the 95 gr ELDs in a 1-7.75 twist at close to or over 3k fps in a gas gun. If it's well put together, it'd make a very easy shooting, precision gas gun. Especially with the free-floating handguard. You'd have little or no issues with muzzle flash at that barrel length, either. So running a brake would actually make sense.

    @RamTahoe@RamTahoe Жыл бұрын
    • Same barrel lengths and bullet weights should be the same between 6.5 Grendel and 6mm ARC, both of which have more energy on-target than .224 Valkyrie. 90gr TNT in my 6.5 Grendels 12” 2700fps 17.6” 2900fps 107gr (.461 G1 Litz) 6.5 Grendel 12” 2450fps 17.6” 2625fps 120gr 6.5 Grendel 12” 2400fps 17.6” 2500fps 123gr 6.5 Grendel (.468 - .527 G1 BC) 12” 2350fps 17.6” 2450fps 130gr 6.5 Grendel (.562 - .615 G1 BC) 12” 2300fps 17.6” 2400fps Hornady 105gr (.530 G1 BC)18” data: 2550fps With 6mm, you have a bit flatter trajectory and superior wind drift compared with 123gr 6.5mm, that eventually surpasses it for energy on-target, but the 130gr in 6.5mm will always have more energy and comparable or less wind drift, plus it hits the steel harder. Ammo availability favors Grendel by a factor of 30x, which is huge.

  • I’m telling you all. If you shoot suppressed, don’t sleep on the Odin Works bbl. It has a wonky +2 port but it’s beneficial if you shoot suppressed. I have several loads from 95 vld to 108eldm & 108 bergers that shoot in the .3’s. It’s a great budget option. However, with Starline Grendel brass, when reloading for any bullet heavier that 105, I keep getting that damn belted magnum bulge at the case web.

    @aaron.from.winchester6744@aaron.from.winchester6744 Жыл бұрын
    • I encountered the belting issue early on. The pressure is too high still when the bolt unlocks and starts extraction. The brass is designed for the bolt gun pressures. You can not rely on the traditional pressure sign method when working up loads. Back your charges down 1-1.5grs and the belting should stop, at least it did for me. Warning I have discovered Hornady's load data for the 6ARC to be very hot. With several powders I either couldn't even fit their charge weight in the case or encountered pressure signs well before their max charges

      @theproudamerican1967@theproudamerican1967 Жыл бұрын
    • You have to be careful with some barrel makers who ride the edge in terms of case support with the feeding cone cut into the breech. Also control what types of powders you use to keep port pressure down. Faster-burning stick powders tend to eliminate the high port pressure and early unlocking. I also use Bootleg adjustable gas carriers shooting suppressed to tame the action nicely in 6.5 Grendel. I have been shooting 12” Grendel suppressed since 2018 without issue. It’s my favorite stick to reach for.

The amount of sample set that would be needed to yield that test useful would be allot of ammo down range. Say 20-30 shots per charge weight. And even still your data would end up being fairly irrelevant.

  • My take on the 6mm ARC (Which I just ordered a 12.5" barrel for) is that it is a do all style cartridge, entirely dependent on your needs. Similar to setting up your AR in 223/5.56. If you want a compact SBR in 6mm ARC, yes, it will lose some velocity, but it's still going to shoot a 100+gr load as fast as any heavy 223 load out of the same barrel length, and it's going to have similar recoil, and much better ballistics. If you want a rifle focused more on the mid to long range, same thing, set it up that way and it will out perform similar setup AR's in 223/556, as well other calibers (particularly at longer range) such as 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, exc exc.

  • I started to do my homework on 6 ARC in 2020 and didn't purchase anything until 2022...feeling like that paid off on everything but a scope. I was wondering if you giuys had any suggestions for someone like me wanting to shoot out to 1K meters or so, but am planning to hunt with this setup??? I have a 3.5-10X on it now but that seems to be only working out to 500-600 then it's just not cutting it for me beyond. I would rather save up for a while and get good, high-quality glass, but not sure where to start as in which brands are the best bang for the buck. Thanks in advance!

  • “Type I” and “Type II” are misnomers. The 6.5 Grendel bolt is an evolution of the .50 Beowulf bolt, which was based on lessons learned by Colt on the 7.62x39 AR-15 program. Alexander Arms did lots of research on getting 7.62x39 case heads to work inside the AR-15 action, and the biggest issue with that case is the rim dimensions. This drives how much extractor lip you need. That pushed the bolt face depth back .011” to allow for the use of a thicker lipped extractor that won’t fold over like after-market 7.62x39 bolt extractors do. Years after AA introduced the 6.5 Grendel, after-market companies who didn’t do any real analysis figured they could use .125” bolt face depth no problem. One particular company, BHW, used their own internal naming convention to distinguish between their .125” face depth 7.62x39 bolts, and their Grendel bolts with .136” face depths. They called their .125” 7.62x39 bolts “Type I” and their .136” Grendel bolts “Type II”. Unfortunately, this naming approach caught-on in the industry, even though real Grendel bolts existed from the start with .136” face depth. There are also differences in extractor pin and shelf locations, bolt tail length to account for the face depth, and radii on the lugs and face to inner wall in the face to add material and strength to the lug roots. Material selection, processes, and heat-treating are also important and should follow the Colt Canada/KAC/AA methods, not the TDP for M16/M4 bolts with HPT and MPI.

I'll look for a JP BCG, but what gas block? It will be suppressed with a Sandman-L. Would love to get some advice. Also, I'm going to try out yall's ammo, which would you recommend? Mostly hunting with this, it will be for my 12 year old son.

Any idea why? Or what my options are. I would love to shoot a lighter round but is it not going to be great with my barrel specs? I tried to order your rounds but they were out of stock.
