Why the secret to success is setting the right goals | John Doerr | TED

Our leaders and institutions are failing us, but it's not always because they're bad or unethical, says venture capitalist John Doerr -- often, it's simply because they're leading us toward the wrong objectives. In this practical talk, Doerr shows us how we can get back on track with "Objectives and Key Results," or OKRs -- a goal-setting system that's been employed by the likes of Google, Intel and Bono to set and execute on audacious goals. Learn more about how setting the right goals can mean the difference between success and failure -- and how we can use OKRs to hold our leaders and ourselves accountable.

  • OKRs are explained at one of the highest levels. Thank you Mr. John Doerr for sharing those stories. Such a fantastic message!

  • John Explanation is fantastic. Objectives should be significant, concrete, action-oriented, inspirational. key results are specific and time-bound, aggressive but realistic, measurable and verifiable. OKR's are important for individuals as wells as organizations.

  • We don't know what the result is until we define the objective. Here John demonstrates how great leaders were able to clearly use OKR. It is inspiring when a human being has the goal of changing the world, that is to dream big.

  • I love how this resonates with Simon Sinek's work, starting with Why. The great addition this has for me is OKR's expression of How. I hope to put this to good use.

  • What a OUTSTANDING piece of knowledge, I wouldn't had a clear understand of OKR until now. I just found myself keeping my head-down and not getting my goals clearly defined for what, why and how. The passion Bono related too, made me reflex, exam, and restructure what my passion is and with my head-up I can ignite my passion to Keep Moving Forward with a greater passion for what is on the horizon.

  • I have been using OKRs at my org for a year now. I strongly recommend them. The great value i get out of them is the fact they force you to keep what's important in mind and work every week to progress towards those goals. Every Monday I'm reminded the 9 reasons my department is working that week and what should be done concretely in the following 5 days. The focus on what matters is key

I will take what has been imparted to me through this and draw strongly from it for my better. Thanks for having already been down that path whereby you can point me and others in the right direction toward success I applaud you. Goals should be a normal part of our lives because it's a type of laid out plan to get us to our desired dreams I love what I've heard today!!!! John even at the height that you have gotten to please don't leave God out of your life He is so neccessary to your well being. God bless you from your sister in Christ in Hammond, LA.
