The (Un)Connected Universe of Cloverfield

In 2007, audiences watching a small indie movie known as Transformers were greeted with a trailer for a found footage film that had no title, only a producer title, and a date for the film. Audiences were immediately intrigued, and the timeline leading to the date of the movie proved to be one of the best uses of viral marketing that we had ever seen.

  • Yeah I feel like the Cloverfield series should've been an anthology. If they want to make the series as a connected universe/multiverse thing, instead of looking at the MCU, they should've looked at Stephen King. Almost all of Stephen King's stories are part of the same multiverse. Though they never crossed over, they are canonically interconnected though not directly unlike the MCU. The way Stephen King did this is through The Dark Tower which explains basically almost everything throughout the multiverse. From IT to the Crimson King.

    • @@thethriftytypewriter I'm glad you agreed! This is something that's been in my head because I feel like movie companies needs to stop copying the MCU when it comes to the shared-universe movies because the MCU was based on comics where the characters already exist in the same universe in the first place whereas original movies such as, well, Cloverfield wasn't and they should take a unique way to connect one movie to another, instead of copying the MCU. Anyways, I think I should watch your Stephen King video. Also, you just earned a sub. Keep it up my friend!

But I’m optimistic for the future and think it has huge potential, it’s ARGs and everything really make it stand out and I’m hoping it can continue down that path.

The writer was confirmed about 2 years ago and the director was confirmed not to long ago. If he just turned out to be crazy and locking people in his basement, it would have just been another Don't Breathe or The OA or Shut In. I was a little bit confused and disappointed that there wasn't more connections/explanations about the first movie in 10 Cloverfield Lane, but I was still thrilled and entertained because of John Goodman's performance (I thought he'd be nominated for an Oscar as well). I haven't seen The Cloverfield Paradox yet but I did read the original script as an intern at a production company, before it was tied into the Cloverfield universe and was called The God Particle. • The first Cloverfield movie was a staple for me. As many here in the comments I watched it when I was quite young and without knowing much about it, but now, knowing the paradox incident i think it sets perfectly the ground to many Sci-fi movies in the future. A time space accident that converges many realities into many alternate Earths gives room for so much creativity and film genres to be explored. As much as I loved the giant monster attacks NY vibe of the original, I'm really expecting to see more about this narrative Universe

  • I like the different styles for each movie. Obviously taking place in different situations while having connections to each other in some way. It’s like giving a wider scale of all the events taking place. Personally, I’d say Clover field paradox was my favorite for the idea of two dimensions trying to pull people back and fourth between them. I haven’t watched a movie that had that concept of dimensional travel and it was quite interesting. I never knew these movies were connected somehow until I watched this soon after 10 clover filed lane. By far though 10 clover field lane is my favorite of the three. I didn’t even realize that there was some kind of alien presence or element to it until the end, but I was actually really interested in these weapons thought to be used my the government that was like deadly nerve agent. Of course keeping the main character trapped with a guy I had an uneasy feeling about through the entire movie. The best moments is when he really goes off the rails. I never finished the first movie technically but I’ve seen clips from almost every scene so in a way I did. I didn’t like the whole found footage direction. It’s too much movement and constant blocking the scene when the main character trips or something.

  • I thought that the accidental reality warp thing was the wrong direction. It undercut elements like the idea that the giant monster might have been there for a long time. My favourite built up theory was the cosmic horror idea that with the original monster being a baby, its parents could actually be highly intelligent, maybe beyond human understanding, and that the invading aliens were something like tools for exterminating pests that killed an infant. My excitement was the idea of a larger story, of maybe even an intelligence, that humans could only get smaller glimpses, that would only look like monsters just killing humans, not seeing the truth that would ruin comfort in society. But then adult monster is just bigger and eats thing like a monster would.

    @DuskyPredator@DuskyPredator Жыл бұрын
    • IIRC there was something there that suggested the monster(s) were there all along, but the weird energy waves they caused as they entered and exited the universe woke up the baby. There was a whole deep dive into how that monster species lived in the underwater region where the slusho harvesting took place. It being there all along also makes sense for the aliens. It would be completely improbable for them pulling aliens across a universe to dump them on Earth. However, if they only attracted them thanks to the energy signature they gave off it starts to make more sense. End of the Cloverfield Paradox can indicate the mother finally woke up and followed her baby to land.

  • Holy shit, connecting Cloverfield and A Quiet Place!? I would have never thought of that, but that's now my new canon! I would absolutely go feral if they actually confirmed that. I've long since thought that most horror works best as an anthology, since you can leave as much up to interpretation as you like instead of having to retread the same concept over and over again and sapping all the horror and mystery out of it. Most of my favorite horror concepts are really simple in their essence, which makes them all the more terrifying, because they take something familiar, twist it slightly and let your own imagination run wild. The longer you drag out the same simple premise though, the more it loses that fear that comes with the unknown. A great example of this is "Lights Out", originally an absolutely TERRIFYING short film that used to give me nightmares (hightly recommend it though!), which was then made into one of the most forgettable, boring movies I've ever seen, partly because they wanted to make the monster more than it originally was and in turn only made it melt into the myriad of practically identical ghost stories that we have all grown so tired of (it's also just a shit movie all around but that's beside the point). Where was I? Oh yeah, all this is to say that I am ABSOLUTELY DOWN for a Cloverfield anthology series, with maybe the odd pair of interconnected movies to spice things up. It has the potential to become the best horror franchise ever made.

    • I'm quite on the fence of Cloverfield being an anthology series. I do need to do a rewatch but I know I would have the unpopular opinion of enjoying Paradox (yet yeah it's hard not being influenced by the naysayers), but I do feel Paradox did open the door, as it's name say, of explaining how "wrong" the events of the movie started everything or made it worse, and it's all just the start. I do recall the rumors of Overlord being another Cloverfield movie but was thankful because the (first) trailer made me think it was really cheesy (and shocked how JJ could downgrade, not a super fan of him or anything) Sorry not going over rant/make an essay about A Quiet Place but I did enjoy the first movie (didn't see the second yet), I would be split on that being connected too but at least open-minded. The trailers, the posters, the arg, the film and it’s secrets. They’ve all blended together to give a perfect horror experience. Clover field lane (although a good movie) didn’t have that, and the paradox *really* didn’t have anything going for it at all.
