YouTubers have to declare ads. Why doesn't anyone else?
Around the world, there are regulations for "influencers". Those regulations make sure that if someone is paid to endorse a product, they have to declare that payment to the people watching. But why does no-one on TV, or film, or anywhere else have to do that?

I don't know Tom, but I'd be willing to bet that what you see on screen is more or less one facet of his real personality. Unlike some other people for whom their onscreen/onstage persona is just a complete fabrication. You might not talk to your friends in lectures, but that's not to say that doing so isn't part of who you want to be.
The real Tom Scott bullies nerds and hits up the club for cocaine and loose women on the weekends.

That bit totally resonated with me. I don't care to be on the phone, on the mic, on camera, on stage. Don't like cocktail or dinner parties. Your TV advertisement disclaimers sound as bad as the commercial breaks on american television! haha Here we get 7 minutes of arthritis medication commercials showing elderly people playing with their grandchildren with optimistic lighting and happy music: "side-effects may include excessive sweating, nausea, vomiting, chills, diarrhea, liver dysfunction, seizures, and possibly death. A rare life-threatening heart complication may occur in some people taking Talafex®. Talk to your doctor about Talafex® today." ...as well as adverts for terrible kitchen & bathroom products, used car dealerships, and insurance companies. Gotta love American commercial breaks

And they're all medicine related - colds, fevers, liver problems, migraines, back pains, arthritis... one or two car commercials and back to the medicine.

“Everyone draws a line about what’s acceptable just beneath what they’re doing.” Word.
I think the phrasing is a bit deceptive or unfair. I'd say it's more that everyone does what's right above their own line. I don't generally say anything I do is acceptable, but I tend to avoid things I don't think are acceptable, but let myself do stuff I do think is acceptable. There are areas this doesn't apply, like bad health choices for example, but I can't say I agree with the implication behind the choice of words
The same is true for many things - the line between "the lower class" and "the middle class" also just _happens_ to tend to be drawn just below wherever someone considers themselves in the social hierarchy.

@@dig8634 Nah, they definitely just make their line below what they do.

Something that you didn't mention is that in the US, one of the biggest product placers is the US Army. Any war movie in which you see actual military gear being used has been approved by whichever branch of the American Armed Forces loaned it to them. The best example I can think of is Top Gun: Maverick, in which the navy had actual recruiting booths set up outside the theatres in which it was playing.

For influencers, who are predominantly popular on *the internet,* a child watching them on a parent's device may get the urge to follow a sponsor link, and if it just so happens mommy has her credit card information saved into Chrome, they can buy the items without the parents' consent.

That mobile game ad was too accurate. “I am morally complicit in this”
I kinda wanna play it now... Free game aside, it needs my credit card.

Imagine someone becoming President and flat out saying "This presidency is sponsored by Raid Shadow Legends"
we need that make biden say that
Instant impeachment
Best idea of 2021. Imma become president now
AJAJAJJAJA that'd be amazing
Still better than the Military Industrial Complex and Healthcare Insurance industries....
Mr. Scott I got a good education from your video. Very well done. Keep up the good work.
that cut back to you vaping its awesome ! I was suprisde to see it, but then when I saw it I looked familiar.
In the ‘is this an advert’ section I skilfully got every single guess wrong
Proves the point I guess
If only politicians were bound by the same rules!
OMG, yes!!! The US Congress should have to wear sponsor logos on their jackets, just like race-car drivers do!!
so true. imagine if Teresa may had to tell everyone her family are in the weapon trade industry
Awesome to see Smg hehe!
they are, its a moral codex. its unwritten rules. they just break them without consequences.
Facts they shouldn't be allowed to be funded by companies who their policies can benefit.
Brilliant. As always
Brilliant Tom! I totally agree that all people who influence the masses should declare their interests…. To include the politicians in their everyday work, not just in a report you have to dig for. Would that not be refreshing. How about the same for quoting or partially and misleadingly quoting scientific studies….. how would that fair with green claims and energy efficiency claims? Well done, keep up the good work Tom
"Rules for Thee but not for Me." -every industry ever
That sounds like something CGP Grey would say
@@bulman07 I feel like I heard him say that in one of his videos

Never laughed so much for a youtube-video! Thanks Tom!
Interesting. Very articulate and informative.
as a german: i would like to add, that that disclaimer has to be on screen every time the product placement takes place, not just once per show.
Exactly. And if I remember correctly, it has to stay up the whole time the placement is taking place.
it is a good idea but so many people put the disclaimer on all the time just to be on the safe side, which defeats the purpose completely
@Nillie That is not really what's happening there. They place it throughout the complete show to normalize it, without actually having to pay attention when they advertise something and when not. It happens mostly on live tv.
@@ManualClips Well, I don't know if that'd be right or wrong (I'm not german and I just found out about it), but I would prefer having a "this program contains products placement/ads/whatever" thing placed all the time than none at all, or only at the end of the ending credits.
Then it has to be tagged as "Dauerwerbesendung"! So every viewer knows, there is advertisment everywhere!
In "Community" there was a whole plotline about an indentured servant who had to change his name to Subway and be a human advertisement for the company 24/7 until his contract ran out, and those episodes were actually sponsored by Subway.
I wasn't aware of the sponsorship, but that's a little odd. If anything, wasn't Subway put in a negative light by those episodes?
@@Chris-du8se bad publicity is still publicity. Some companies made deliberately annoying/bad commercials so you would remember them.
@@mefnow grubhub?
Same goes for the Honda plotline a few years later, two characters from the show even appeared in an actual Honda ad.
@@Chris-du8se there is no bad press... Watch any news program
"It's time to play is this an Advert-" *youtube ad starts playing*
Just a thought. Television and movies are produced by large companies while influencer channels like KZhead and Twitc are generally run by individuals. I think this is where governing bodies think people will see the difference. I have always assumed everything on TV and in movies was just big ads, but I think you're right about people having some sort of 'personal connection' with influencers leading to them being more trusted.
30+ minutes of Tom Scott...Lemme just settle in
