And THIRD, skip all these steps, and GET TO KNOW who you wanna work with, and their colleagues before applying. - Key to a job is being social with persons before. These kind of people are everywhere, not only 3rd world countries. It depends on the person himself, if he think he preserve security from hiding information from others or he pass it to others to get more information. I used to be the one who pass it to others in order to get new information.
Yeah, I wish peoples mindset around that changed. I always help as much as I can and am happy when someone gets ahead. If they surpass me then they must have worked harder or found a better way to present themselves. Maybe they can now help me get ahead as well.

Can confirm Lesley’s point as both interviewer and interviewee. And situation with certs is a bit tricky for the entry level candidates. Many hiring managers will toss resumes of the candidates if they have certs and no experience. This is considered inadequate and suspicious. Getting certs is a separate skill that doesn’t correlate well with the job skills. And even if getting certs might give you some knowledge, it won’t help with the experience. The cheapest and most effective option here would be reviewing some common certs course materials and focus on practice. After all, interviewers want to hear a story of achievements, challenges, tries and failures. Not about preparation for certs and trying to memorize stuff instead of getting hands on experience learning it.
That’s because most hiring managers are DUMBASSES who don’t know the first thing about what’s needed for the actual job! Yes, if one has around five cents with no practical experience, then that mostly shows one is good at test taking. But someone with one or two certs and trying to get into the field shows they have a PASSION and enough knowledge and evidence that they at LEAST have a foundational knowledge. Most hiring managers expect someone to have 10-15 years of IT/programming experience yet are willing to work for only $15 an hour.

Not every resume bullet point can have numbers provided for. I also heard that if the actions and impacts do not have a quantifiable metric that that can be reasonably obtained that it's better to not put some numbers because they will assume it's made up.

Based on my personal experience, I attended a resume module/workshop during my degree studies due to it being mandatory but I do not find it helped me at all? I shown my older friends that were at hiring manager/lead positions they had to helped me rework it out and then the rest is all up to me on how I elaborate my experiences and the key points/details/information/skillset to tailor for different types of industyr/companies/departments. I have come across to some interviewers who looked at my resume and commented - 'you need to include your language proficiency' etc... they want different things to be shown. At my previous job, I also helped my manager to interview the new recruits, I also helped friends to find job, they send their resume and then I took a look. I was kind of shocked that some of their resume did not elaborate a lot of their projects/experiences it was just a simple minimalistic kind of resume short and simple so sweet but that is not all that sweet to the interviewer as they can't tell what kind of experiences or skillset/projects you have and your application will just be ignored and get no call ups due to unmatch skillset as there is not sufficient information about you. 34:00 that would be great advice, but the employers don't usually seek people who aren't perfect. If the can find red flags in you, then it's usually a game over unless every other candidate is worse than you. Lie or not, it depends on how you want to portray your image, can you fake 'till you make it, or as she said you being fired soon after.

i have just landed a senior security research specialist position for the state of WA but it only pays 75k but i will start sharing my experience on my channel
I do want to add, there are some BIG mistakes you can make when trying to switch careers i'm still paying for in my tech transition and it took me a year to overcome with my accounting career.The biggest is DO NOT do fast track degrees in competitive environments like public accounting or software development as I did. These are areas that have the pick of the litter for candidates. You, as the fast track person who didn't do a coop, are rarely going to be considered over those candidates who have incredibly relevant practical experience or worst case, already interned at the firm. You can try to fit an internship within a fast track, but that's a really tight window of educated enough to be a good hire and you've already graduated. You better already have a guaranteed in if you're gonna do the fast track route, be it a relative who owns a tax prep office or your employer is helping you transition from one department to another, or it's gonna be an absolute grind.

The boss said here is the resumes for all the people applying for the summer job. Give me the top five applications. The dad takes the big stack to the staircase, throws them down the stairs. He then went down and picked the top five resumes. He quit his job but he made me laugh

Although there in much good advice here and I'm grateful for the video, the 'worst CV ever' blog post says that a certification without relevant experience is a big red flag, but here we're advised to do a cert if we'll learn something from it. Are we being advised here to only do a certification if you already have a job in the same field? There's a lot of contradictory advice out there regarding whether certifications are helpful, pointless or even harmful, and I don't think this helps clarify the matter.
Certification is a business, don't forget that. Show what you have done, cert or not and you will land a job. Believe in what you do, not in a paper that will be obsolete in 3 years and you will have to renew. People that have time to do tons of certifications are not really working in anything serious.

This is the truth about cybersecurity, this how difficult it is to get looked. Scammers and bootcamps spent years telling a lot of people it was easy to access and she basically dispelled all of it
@18:33 - It's a challenge for me not to at least give the nod to my Windows NT Server time for solving issues (i.e., 'Domain Trusts') without the ability to search on Google. Yes, it's not relevant in the current IT context (although I was asked just a few years ago if I was "comfortable taking computers apart and putting them back together" during an interview). Still, it does show the willingness to study for solutions. Of course, cyber-security has less of a legacy aspect than help desk...
Well, when I check CVs/Resumes with people who did stuff like you did, it tells me many things: you had it hard, you had to be quite clever to circonvent issues with Microsoft AD at that time (I know I did) with no good information from the Internet, you were on your own most of the time to troubleshoot and make stuff works, etc. But an HR person like David's guest will dismiss your CV/Resume as irelevant as you wrote about discontinued technology like Windows NT, etc. That's why I want to screen the CVs/Resumes BEFORE HR does when I am hiring new people because I know the technology involved and what work needed to be done and it gives me a clear view of the candidate. A few questions to check stuff up and it is easy to know if technically the guy knows his stuff of not. Then you let the HR do their softskill bs that you could always bypass because you need a technical person, not a waiter or a barman that smiles all the time.
@@Traumatree: Agism is definitely a bigger aspect in the IT industry than elsewhere - and including any Windows NT references is the same effect as including a resume photo of an older white male. Without at least one current gateway IT certification, it makes the person appear to be an out-of-touch "dinosaur".

My resume is now 8 pages with 15 years of experience. I can't remember the last time I gave it to a recruiter or hiring manager and I didn't get an interview. What matters is the substance and the ability to speak to it. If you've done a lot of things then share it even if it is more than the "recommended" number of pages.
I think maybe it varies between fields. Ive been a software engineer for 25 years and have had a dozen jobs or so (lots of contract jobs and job hopping early in my career) so yeah my full resume was like 10 pages too. Nobody was responding to the full resume except a few head hunters. Everyone kept telling me my résumé should be two pages max with my experience level so I basically just put the last 12 years of jobs which were only two and then my summary I put how many years of experience I had and in my cover letter I said, I have my full résumé of experience available upon request and nobody has ever requested it, not even once. The two page résumé gets a ton of play. It’s crazy to think employers would not want to see everything a senior level position has done but I guess they really only care what you’ve done recently.
@@ogredev Yep, you make a great point. I can only speak to IT and Security since those are the areas I have experience. Another thing to consider is at what point in the process is the resume being provided. For me it is usually a formality for setting up an interview, not applying for a job. Maybe I wouldn't get as great results. There is a huge difference in getting hired when people are reaching out to you vice you applying for jobs.

Something I have found that gets the attention of interviewers and can help level the playing field (or even take control of the flow) in an interview where there are scripted questions is to ask for a copy of the script/questions so that you can read along. Justify it with a reason like avoiding misunderstanding the questions.

Why not also talk about the motivation letter that is send with the CV? Or is that not a thing in US?
In the technical world, a motivation letter is useless. They want your technical skills, not your softskills. And if the company is only after softskills experts, run away from them as the job probably is really boring.
Experience counts even if resume is wrong
I was missing one very important thing. You can also tailor your resume/CV to jobs YOU actually want and like. So by deliberately actually using a certain format, wording, keywords and maybe actually deliberately hit certain biases. I mean finding and getting a job is great and all, but in the end it's also a waste of everyone's time (incl your own) when you already know that a certain company is not gonna be a good fit to begin with. It's very likely you will get yourself bored/burned out, irritations are gonna show, or worse. For example, I have done many job interviews myself as well as reading resumes/CV's. Beside the main things that are needed for the job, I mainly focus on what people do besides their job. The reason why, is because I can't teach somebody enthusiasm but I can teach people knowledge (or can be gained by additional courses). For that reason I don't even focus if people have a degree anymore these days. From this experience I also find hiring a professional for these things a little extreme. That being said, it totally depends what kind of job you're looking for as well as a difference in culture. Personally I love candidates who use the "Why don't you just", but ONLY when they use it with a open mind as a kinda brainstorm session. Mostly because it shows that they are active thinkers as well as actively asking questions (which is always a positive thing). But yeah, I agree that you should never trying to be the smart kid. Although some companies are also very egoistic and flat out refuse any critique or feedback. You will be surprised how the simple solutions are very often being overlooked. But an interview is just not the best place and moment to discuss that, I agree with that. Great advice nonetheless, Lesley is a great person! :)

Ok, so, I'm definitely one of those "hands on/immersive learner" types. I've learned the vast majority of what I know over my 25+ yrs in IT "on the job." I don't have a degree because learning that way just doesn't work for me. So, if degrees aren't strictly necessary but (it seems) every job posting lists it as required, how do you work around that? The last time I looked for a job (about 2.5 years ago) I really struggled to get a reply to jobs I applied to. Full transparency, I could probably work on my bullet points a little but I was laid off and treated job hunting mostly as my full time job. I submitted hundreds of resumes and got maybe 10-12 responses. I know my resume format/wording isn't THAT bad.
Going to be blunt here, if you already have 25+ years, mostlikely the reason they don't respond to you is "to old".
