Wrt the charging of the battery with the alternator and bicycle, how did you know which lead to connect to which terminal and which way to spin the alternator? Thanks
also you can't get an alternator running and providing charge with no excitation. You need to have at least some voltage to have that.

you can't get an alternator running and providing charge with no excitation. You need to have at least some voltage to have that.
If the generator has permanent magnets, it does not need an external excitation - but good catch nonetheless!
