AIRPLANES & AUTISM

2019 ж. 15 Сәу.

Several situations have happened around the world where a family has been removed from the an airplane because their child who is on the autism spectrum had a meltdown due to inconveniences that could have been prevented.
Travel can be stressful for anyone let alone a child on the autism spectrum, and for Salama and I this has always been a concern for us and something we try to our best to prepare for. What we have learned through this video is that there is a "Special Service Code" DPNA which stands for "Disabled Passenger with intellectual or developmental disability needing assistance".
Travellers can use this code with the travel agent or airline when booking a flight which will then allow them to list the support they need such as boarding the flight early, getting a hot meal upon boarding, or ensuring that you are all sitting together, essentially anything that can be done to make the travel experience as soon as possible.
The problem here is that Airlines and Airports are not required to cater to the requirements when you use a DPNA code, more importantly many passengers around the world don't even know it exists. That is why it is so important to raise awareness for the DPNA code, to push our airlines and our airports to acknowledge the code and ensure that travel is inclusive no matter what your needs are, so that we can all experience travelling this world with safety and dignity.
Much love and God bless.
Thank you Travelport and Etihad Airways for raising awarness about the DPNA code and making this video possible, and for all the work you are doing to make global travel inclusive and safe for everyone. #TravelUnified

  • I never knew this code existed!! I've been avoiding flying with my family because my son is on the Autism Spectrum and he had a meltdown when he was 18 months on an Airplane, it was a horrible experience and I didn't want to travel ever again!! I think I'll try a short haul flight with this code and see how it goes In sha Allah. Thanks for sharing this

We have done short flights when he was smaller and he slept through but as he’s gotten older his struggles have changed and I’m super anxious so trying to prepare as much as I can. Our flight is going to be about 14 hours with a 4 hour wait in between. Making so much dua it goes easy for him. He’s non verbal and can only eat about 5 things. Please make dua for us. It so difficult trying to give my other two children the life they want without making my youngest struggle.

I have found that by preparing them for what is coming up is a LIFE CHANGER! eg Say they are going outside for a PE game I talk to them about how its OK if their team loses a point! I now have teachers requesting me for their classes with autistic students. Prep prep prep is the key! Thanks for this vlog!

    • I suspect there will be people who take offence at the use of the term intellectual disability particularly in regard to a high functioning child on the autism spectrum. Autism is a neurological difference, my son is 12 and high functioning/ savant - he struggles with sensory issues but he is more intelligent than most grown men. Not every person on autism spectrum is low functioning and not everyone is high functioning, it is a spectrum - which is why it would be more inclusive to use terms like ‘neurological difference’ or ‘disability’ or even just use the term ‘autistic’ rather than use the term ‘intellectual disability’. I haven’t disliked the video- I found it very informative and think that this is a beautiful family but I can see why others may be offended.

She uses DPNA code for me all the time and my dad is epileptic so gets assistance too - thanks to my mum we go together as a family (everywhere) and go in the special assistance lounge with the big comfy chairs away from all the shopping area with all the noise and bright lights (which i don’t like becuz of my sensory processing) - I will share with my friends who are also Autistic as they’re going on a gap year soon and need to purchase flight tickets ! Thanks so much/ Danke schön/ Danke je/ Najs Tuke (again) ! Love from Southeast England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK🇬🇧 ~.

  • Thank you so much for doing this video! I came across the young girl one before yours and was so angry I had to comment on their video. The fact that something so simple as the flight attendant giving her something hot to eat would of defused the situation. Knowing about this code would of made sure the flight attendants knew and understood. I myself never knew about this code so will use it from now on. I have 2 with special needs. When they were younger we were able to board early with families with young children but now they are older we have to board in the scrable with adults which can cause an awful lot of upset. Being able to board early can make a lot of difference to get a child settled with I pads drinks etc so less anxiety and over excitement. So once again thank you
