What I love most about this video is that it encourages us to think differently about our landscape images, using a longer lens to do so. A longer lens helps us to pick out details and simplify compositions, which is a type of photography that I like. I feel that I might not take epic landscape images but I can improve by becoming more creative. Thank you for this viewpoint, Kim, I really enjoy looking at photography in this way.

My main focal lengths for a long time have been in the range of 85..105 mm (on 35 mm film or sensors of that size), that slightly concentrated view is pretty much "normal" for me. But I've occasionally been shooting landscapes at the long end of the Panasonic Leica 100-400 mm on MFT.
Too many landscape photographers think landscape is just done with a 16-35/15-35. Some I know never seem to shoot more than 50mm. Your video is a great example that the telephoto lens has a place in landscape work. Great job.

When I look back at my favourite landscape images some (about 50%) of my favourites have been taken with my 100-400 lens. I like sometimes to have the main subject of my image in the foreground. If I can have an interesting background then the long lens will compress the scene giving a lovely image.
My main lens is the 70-200mm z-mount so I do use a zoom quite a bit. The only non-zoom lens is the 105mm macro which is a bit of a specialized lens. That is on my roadmap to buy but I’m also thinking about the 200-600mm if it ever becomes available.
I use my 100-400 most of the time, mostly for birding and wildlife but have started using for landscape as well. Love it. So versatile.
I agree with you, Kim. The Z 100-400 is a great all-round lens. When Gerry and I went to South Africa back in September / October I was limited to taking just two lenses due to luggage restrictions so I took the Z 24-70 f/2.8 and the 100-400 with my Z7ii. That combination covered everything I needed and I was delighted by the results from both lenses. By the way, Gerry had the Z6 with the Z 24-200 which was also a great all round holiday set-up!
I like my 100-400, as well. It's a wonderful intermediate to long zoom. But I also really like my 14-30 & 24-120. The 24-120 & 100-400 are my most used lenses. I use the 100-400 most when I feel I need to use the 200-400mm range, or if I feel like isolating certain scenes as you mention. Otherwise, the 24-120 is my go-to lens. I use my 14-30 for streetscape/cityscape and architecture scenes.
I use my 100-400 zoom the most because after looking at my best photos, 9/10 were taken with that lens; it is my favorite lens anyways,so versatile and such good sharpness
I truly love my 150-600mm for that ability to zoom in and eliminate distractions. Some days I just carry an oversized lens case with my 24-120, the walking stick with monopod head and that 150-600 beast hanging on the D850 at my side. OTOH, I just spent a day in the fog with the 16-35 which is a whole other magic.
My walk around lens is a 55-200mm (APS-C) but I really love my 70-300mm. Part of that is because of several back surgeries that limit mobility, but I also, as you say, really like the ability to narrow the focus on a discrete subject and cut out the clutter. The only other lens to which I retreat is my 18-55mm - all kit lenses and all fun, easy and capable.
Hi Kim .I mainly shoot wildlife whilst walking about with a sigma 159-600 on d500 .Whils out if nothing about I often use this lens for landscape images I find it's great isolating subjects.Also gives me something to do .Love this lens.😊.Glad your using it so much it can do. 👍
This is the lens I am saving money for to complete my set of the 14-30 24-120 and the 100-400. I like these abstract zoomed in landscape images a lot and really enough them so can’t wait to get my hands on it.
The 100-400mm is an amazing lens. I have only used it for bird/wildlife but will give it a go in landscape photography. Thx for another great video.

Got my Z 100-400 last month. Not used for landscape yet but looking forward to doing so in Yorkshire soon. Bought the TC1.4x too, for wildlife use. This now replaces my old f-mount 200-500. Enjoying your content. Must get back to Scotland again in 2023. Its now 19 years since I completed the Munros.
I've have evolved like you and carry my Nikkor 80-400 AF-S in my bag with my Z7 at all times. Great for Landscapes, but I am still learning how to use it. I even use it for macros on flying insects. The results with the limited field of view make you feel like you are in their world. The autofocus is very good. You can see the hairs on the bee's back. I have tried the same thing with more of a macro lens and can't get the same effect. Bravo for your good advise.

I have been absolutely loving my Nikkor 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 G and my 18-140mm 3.5-5.6 G lenes with my Nikon D5300. Out of the dozen lenses I have, these two give me the best all-around results and the photos are sharp as a tack. These are the two lenses, along with my "nifty fifty" Nikkor prime lens, that I take along with me most times. I believe taking these lenses gives me telephoto, wide angle and a good portrait options.
I've just jumped into a new camera and system. And decided the first lens I was getting is the 200-600mm and I'm already enjoy it immensely! Very different to using the same WIDE lens for astro stuff! It's bloody heavy though 😅

I recently purchased a 70 - 210 mm lens. One of the things that this lens has encouraged me to do is to hunt out new landscapes where I can take advantage of this telephoto lens. I am animated to experiment with simplifying and isolating details of the landscapes I visit.
I've found that for landscape photography I've been using my 24-200mm the most in the last year. I occasionally also use my 20mm f1.8 prime. I am really wanting a 200-600 as well. Good luck to you in 2023... I'll be watching. 😊

Hi Kim, A very interesting video. Like you said, we carry around too many lenses and only use one or two. I now try to carry two for my Nikon D750, a 17-35mm and a 28-300mm which covers everything i need. Take care and i look forward to your next video.

Most used will be my trusty Zeiss 55 F1,8. It's a do it all lens, but my mission is to get more comfortable with the Sony 200-600 and wildlife photography. Three months of ownership of that lens have taught me that I'll need three years to reach that stage!
Hi Kim thanks for a great video. Love to see your enthusiasm for photography and your gear that lets you express your vision. I teach photography and always explain the different ways to use lenses differently, if that makes any sense. Most people think that for landscape photography you need a wide or ultra wide angle lens. Although this is a common perception I show my students the advantages of using telephoto lenses for landscape photography. As you have nicely demonstrated how they can be used to isolate or simplify the composition. I love how much longer lenses use their compression characteristics to enhance and make things farther away larger and become more pronounced and defined in the composition. Whereas with a wide angle they become less prominent. Thanks again for your video I love your enthusiasm and have and will continue to enjoy watching more of your work. My favorite long lens is my Z70-200mm f2.8. After watching this video I am considering picking up the 2x converter. I did consider the Z100-400mm at the time but I felt the 70-200 would suit my needs at the time more.
Same! I use the 28 and 40 for lightweight street photography, but the 24-120 and 100-400 cover everything else.

YESSSSS the 100-400 is the lens you definitely want to take with you on a landscape photography expedition.
Another interesting thing you can do with your zoom lens, is assign yourself specific focal lengths to shoot at on those days when you don’t feel too inspired. A 100-400 gives you all kinds of options.
I have been toiling over my decision to bring or not to bring this lens on an upcoming first time trip to Scotland. I have been in the "no" camp for a while now and I think you just tipped me back over into the "yes" camp. I'm a bit worried about weight and a larger tripod, but I keep getting the nagging feeling that I should just lug it on my trip and I'll be happier for it. :)

Lovely video Kim, I only posses 2 lenses a 18-200 SONY & 18-55 (kit lens), SONY they cover most basis, however i am looking for something with a slightly longer reach, & improved glass so considering 70-350.
Most of my effort goes into wildlife photography, so the micro four thirds camera wears a 300mm prime lens most of the time. If I want to capture a landscape, it's time to sit down and change lenses. This video encourages me to look for landscape details, and capture aspects of the scene without changing lenses. And to more often start the day with a 40-150mm zoom lens.
I could only afford the 100-400mm oly 😬😊 but it's on my om-1 😊

I just got the Z 100-400mm lens last week and it's a great companion to my Z9. My go to lenses for 2023 are: Z 24-120mm, Z 100-400mm, and the f mount 500mm pf with adapter.
Ok, something I didn't understand was when you said "because this is a zoom lens, you can't use this for foreground interest." But I use (other, wider angle) zoom lenses to get foreground interext a lot. Maybe the focal length doesn't easily allow foreground and background, but not the fact that it is a zoom? At least, to me. Maybe I am missing something?
I noticed this too. I'm sure Kim meant "Because this is a telephoto lens..."
Always enjoy your films Kim, in my experience too many photographers put too much emphasis on foreground interest, often so much so that the foreground becomes the main subject at the detriment of the main subject and the area of images which holds the interest, thankfully recently there seems to be a movement of folks also understanding this and being more precise in their areas of interest In their images!
I own a 100-400 f4.5-5.6 and have only used it for bird photography (mostly with a 1.4x TC). I will take it with my for landscape too.
Beautiful images that you captured ...absolutely love my zooms. right now use mostly an olympus 12-100 (24-200) it gives me images that could not be captured by a fixed focal length Lense ....life changes fast ... need to be ready

Hi Kim, I Purchased the Z 100-400 as soon as it was put to market by Nikon. I used it rarely for landscapes during the first six months, however I began using it solely for landscapes while shooting Death Valley, CA and the eastern swamps of Texas in 2022. It’s a great lens which I plan on using a whole lot more as the composition calls for it. It’s also wonderful for wildlife in certain conditions.

I have recently (2 weeks ago) taken the plunge (financially) and bought this lens. I mainly thought of it (along with the also wickedly-priced 1.4 teleconverter) to replace my Tamron 150-600 which would not autofocus on Nikon Z bodies. I used that lens mainly for bird photos. I'm impressed with the optical quality of the 100-400. I'm going to be using it also for some landscape photography and as a bonus its great close-focusing capability (nearly macro) will be much used for wildflower photos - another passion of mine. It may never come off my Z6. Would like to see some of the landscape photos you have produced with your 100-400.
I have a project for this year called the Intimacy of the Landsxxape... thus using wide and zoom lenses to illustrate the grand vista as well as the intimate image of ths same scene.. I hope to fet inspiration from your work. Cheers, Kim

Amazing video, I'd love to try a longer lens like yours. Currently (and I just started my journey in photography a few months ago) I only posses a Nikon z5 + z 24-200mm 4/6.3 which for me is more than enough, but I'm finding myself using more of the end part of my focal length to pick those simple but powerful compositions in the landscape as you mentioned. p.s, I'm so glad to have moved to Scotland, such beautiful scenery everywhere you look. Moving here inspired me to start photography as I want everyone to see how stunning this magical land is.
Welcome to Scotland! I feel we have a lot in common :D I moved here in '21 and love it, also took up photography (as in more than shooting on holidays only) as I am always in awe of all the beautiful scenery. I recently got a Sony 200-600 lens, if you are thinking of going for a super tele zoom, be aware that it is a very different beast than 'regular' lenses. Your 24-200 already can get a decent reach. When you have something upto 400-600 range photography becomes a hell of a lot more serious/expensive. I've been shooting for over a year now and I recommend you give yourself time to fully understand* your current set-up before taking the plunge. * You might already do of course, if so, feel free to disregard! It took me ages to get to grips with the full capabilities of my camera.
I use my 600mm sigma lens all the time. It's even good for capturing butterfly's in great detail, and my 18-55 nikon len and Samsung 21ultra for landscape. 👍
I recognise those beaches, they are truly stunning in the right weather. I use a 70-300mm on a d5600, and that is my go to lens on that camera.
At 1:07 I was like "turn, turn, turn, don't miss that bird passing in front of the Moon!" 😅

It is good to carry several lens in your backpack if you have the muscle and strength. But you can't maintain that capacity or capability over time. And in the end, we settle for a small and light point-and-shoot with high focal range or a mobile phone instead.
I take a simple 3.5 lens setup for landscape that covers me from 14-400mm. I don't find my primes necessary for this type of work. No need to wonder about what to take and what to leave. I take the Z 14-24mm f/2.8, Z 24-70mm f/4, Z 70-200mm f/2.8 and Z TC 2.0 If it wasn't for already needing the 70-200mm for work, I'd definitely be using the 100-400mm for landscape type stuff.
Also, thank you very much in discussing MPB! After watching your video here I looked to see what lenses I truly wasn't using anymore. Also I was looking to get a Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR so I am trading in 4 older lenses in addition to my older Nikon D3200 and I will still get some cash back after the purchase of the 10-20mm in like new condition. I shot birds and landscapes primarily. I have always been partial to the 100-400 range (old Tamron). Since acquiring the Z9 the Nikon 100-400 S has become my main lens. My 150-600 and prime 600 sit in my vehicle or at home. For a walk around or hikes, I love the Nikon Z 24-120 and the old Nikon AFS 28-300, but 90% of the time the lens on my camera is the 100-400 S (sometimes with a 1.4 TC). I do own a number of small and medium prime lenses, but these only see very specific uses (Night sky, Macro, or special portraits). The word that comes to mind when using this lens is "connected", and "uncomplicated" subjects. Plus, if a bird or surfer comes onto the scene, well I'm ready.

Without videos like you, I'd likely (pretty certain) I'd never see places like this, and from the point of view of a photographer/adventurer like you. - I enjoyed this video. I apologize for asking, but I'm pretty much a novice (and a hack) when it comes to photography - do you have images showing examples comparing the foreground photos you mentioned to compared to the images you mention in this video (the emphasis photos). I also take my kiddo with me on little photo adventures, so we learn together, and I think it would be nice examples of how approaching landscape with a lens such as you used is a good idea. We typically do a lot of macro photography (flowers, gems (museums), and insects), and then wide angle for landscapes and night & sunsets photography). We were considering a 400mm (or zoom) for bird/wildlife photography - so I found this video especially interesting/useful. When I go out for a hike in my beloved Swiss Alps I always take with me the Z 24-120mm F4 S lens - it is sooo versatile ... and the image quality ist stunning for a 5x zoom. If the hike is not too arduous, the Z 14-30 F4 also comes with me. With these two lenses I shoot about 75% of my landscape images. But since november the two time-tested warhorses are facing competition: It's the Z 100-400mm S VR, and indeed, I am excited about it's versatility at the long end of the focusing range. I can shoot small animals at a distance, some wildlife photography incl. bird photography (with the TC 1.4 if necessary), and, last but not least, landscapes in a new way. It will accompany me more and more I assume.
First, I want you to know how much I enjoyed your 2022 calendar. I loved looking at the lighthouses everyday. Next, where did you find the 100-400 zoom lens? They are as easy to find as the Z9 camera. Keep up the good work in 2023.

I have Pentax 150-450 mm lens, which seem to work similar compared to your Nikon lens. This lens (even though being heavy and large) is always with me when I am out to take photos. I have a FF camera (Pentax K1) and an APS-C camera (Pentax K3) and this way I have shifted focal range using both camera bodies. Together with 1.4x Pentax converter, I have a range from 150 mm (lens on K1) and 945 mm (450 mm + 1.4x converter on K3, which needs a correction for the crop of the sensor of 1.5x). Long end is covered this way, and often the best photos are just tiny snippets of a large landscape scenery. My second-best lens is Pentax 15-30 mm lens (similar to the Tamron lens you can buy for other systems). This lens invites taking foreground into the landscape photo and add some depth into it. I have a lot of lenses and also a lot of old ones from Pentax long history of lens-making. However, I prefer to use high en actual lenses, as only with these lenses I get good material for post-processing. The old ones are for special cases where I want that old-school rendering or for B&W photos. I grew up at the German North Sea which is not so impressive and wild like the North Sea where you live. When I am out there (now only during holidays as I live in Southern Germany) I am just there around sunrise and dawn. The light of blue hour and golden hour adds some magic to the photos, composition alone never will be able to achieve.
Hi Kim, I enjoy your channel, thank you for the great videos. I have been shooting Nikon film cameras for years. (F4s, F5, FA, FE2 and a 1968 Nikon F) So I have a lot of vintage glass. Moving to the full frame Nikon D750 made sense. The zoom I use most is an 80-200 f/2.8. Sure, I have thought about getting the 70-200 f/2.8 VR ii but don't need to spend the money. With the D750, I can switch to auto ISO when shooting in low light. With film, a tri pod comes in handy. When I got yhe D750, I also got the 28-300 f/3.5/5.6. Also a great lens and the VR definately can help, just not on the F4s. Cheers.
I love my 100-400mm lens for my Micro Four Thirds camera. Its one of my most loved and well used lenses. Your lens is fantastic at making the waves look majestically impressive against the rugged landscape with its compression capabilities, which a wide angle landscape lens could never replicate. I love the 100-400
Just a tought as it comes. I discovered a way to improve wide angle lenses with boring ground. I find a main subject that I intend to shoot. Then I roam around with the idea of finding a composition in X without really being concerned with the originality of what makes this X. I also try to think in 1x1 ratio as I do this. Not just rectangularly. I find that when my subject is in the center of the X it makes for a very dynamic feel and brings a sense of on location.

Mbp offers me only 70% of the price I can get for selling on second hand shops online and physical shops here in my own country. You can easily include forgrund with 100-400mm 😊 just need to be further away 😅

Hi Kim, I looked closely at getting the 100-400mm lens, but have decided to hold off and wait for a Z mount 200-500mm lens I have AF-S 17-35mm, 28-300mm and 200-500mm lenses. My most used Z mount lens is the 24-120/4 S.

The 50 1.2 is my favorite lens by far (Sony), but that's just me. All the best.
I’m gonna be using my Sony Alpha 1 on the 16-35GMII in 2023 & then when it gets into low light & nighttime, I’ll swap for the 50GM & reluctantly leave the 70-200GMII at home, because I can only hike with two lenses
Ugh. I miss Scotland. Visited for the first time last year in March. I went to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and shot a wedding at Culzean Castle. I’d move to Scotland if I could. I can’t wait to go back again.

At this moment my goto lens is the 24-120 for landscapes and 200-500 for wildlife. Soon I will trade in my 200-500 for a 180-600, but doubt if I also trade in my 70-200 VRii.

i love how people talk about my lenses and cameras, i use my 100mm, my 14mm, my carl zeiss 15mm f2.8, my sony a7r 5 61mp 4500$ camera 😁 The industry has done a great job in creating a personal relationship with the tool.
I have z100-400 but have not used it that much. Instead I been using my Z14-24 f2.8 much more then my z24-70 f2.8. I'm geting closer to my subjects and want that super wide angel view.

90 percent of the time I use my 100-400 as well... Lately, I've noticed people demolish their true beauty by killing it with light rooms maybe do a video on that.
"What's your experience with zoom lenses been like?" I always have wondered why one wants to use a 100-400mm (4X) zoom lens; in this case, a "NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6" zoom lens that costs about $2500 USD. While I am not a pro photographer, looking back over my life, it seems that I have dealt with many different types of lens. In college, it was compound and dissecting microscopes; in addition to my owning 2 Minolta SLR 35mm film cameras (at different time periods), each with a F/1.2 lens. Once out of college, it was binoculars used in my career as a wildlife biologist. Speaking of the latter, I would have never considered going out into the field with a pair of binoculars rated at 4X. 7X was pretty much the standard, and one always had the option of going higher (e.g., to 10X), if the budget allowed it and the user could "handle" the smaller viewing area and potential (magnified) movement of the binoculars. A 4X pair of binoculars (if available on the market) would have been a waste of money. Even without ever using 4X binoculars, I already knew that they would not provide me with the closeup view of scenery and/OR wildlife that I wanted. Now that I have returned to photography, I bought a mirror-less camera with a 5X lens. This was even though the sales person tried his best to talk me into a 3X lens citing better light gathering quality (speak of stating the obvious!). If I had "light gathering ability" as my priority in selecting a lens, no doubt I would have bought a F/1.2 prime lens, not a zoom lens. However, I wasn't long before I found the 5X lens lacking. I live in the mountains of Alaska, and would notice such things (e.g.) as that beautiful Red Fox sitting in the snow on a hill top watching me, looked to be about the size of a postage stamp on the photo with my lens zoomed all the way out to 5X. Now, I have a lens that will zoom in on a subject up to 16X and I am happy with it. It certainly did not cost $2500 USD, but (most of the time) I am aware of the shortcomings of this lens and work within (and/or around) its limitations. Doing this, I find this lens to be fantastic for the type photographs I wish to take, and it has pretty much found a permanent home attached to the front of my camera. To summarize: I think Kim has given an honest opinion of her 4X lens in this video entitled, "Why I'll Be Using This Lens More Than Any Other In 2023!". However, I believe that she will fairly quickly become dissatisfied with it. I think she will find the lens satisfactory for general landscape photography, but there will come a day when she will desperately want to "close in" on a subject at a magnification significantly higher than 4X and that option will not be available with her current lens. This situation might occur someday when she is out in the field and she sees a rarely sighted animal or bird. This situation could be one of those once in a lifetime chances and Kim zooms out to 4X, takes a picture, then discovers that the subject, much like my example above regarding the Red Fox, is about the size of a postage stamp on her photograph taken at 4X. Should this occur, especially more than once, Kim will probably trade this 4X lens in for one with a higher maximum magnification, or buy a Nikon Z 2X teleconverter for her $2500 4X lens for an additional $670 USD. Nice video and 100-400 is great for landscapes.. If you buy 1.4x teleconverter for it is even more fun especially for moon rises and moon sets. I don't think mpb is good place to sell your gear to. They are offering not enough for the gear as they have business to run. When you try to sell it yourself, you will get lot more money for the gear and reinvest it. Mpb offered me 1200 for 5dmk4... I've sold it online for 1700 to happy new owner and year building my feedback I can sell things easier. Why don't you sell to ffordes when you Scottish? 😉

I just cant justify the expense of a super zoom lens like yours - its a cracker but £2,000 is outside my budget sadly
I hate long zoom lens 😹 you can pretend that look for intimate small landscapes with long scenes, but if you suck at wide angle , using long zoom lens is just an excuse to not overcoming your weakness and hiding from it with long zoom lens, or you just got old fart ... i feel only in mountains you can really get advantages of long zoom lens for big scenes and framing something interesting happening. I admire view of wide angle lens how big scene it can capture and how challenging is to find balanced scenes to capture. i feel those who fails in wide angle try to comfort with simple scene that long zoom lens are allow to capture... but its just my opinion ;D

this lens is too big to use. useful only in rare events.
