Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie discuss Barbie's surprising feminism | 7.30

It's one of the world's most recognisable toys and one of the more polarising by today's standards. Barbie is now the subject of a new movie produced and starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig with Ryan Gosling as Ken.
It's part homage, part comedy but with a strong feminist twist. 7.30’s Sarah Ferguson speaks Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.

  • I love that Margo is talking like a producer, strategily, clear, goal oriented and Greta is talking like a director, guide by instinct and creative. It allows you to see how big projects are always team work. It also shows what happens when you turn jealousy or envy into admiration. Both women are great but in their own unique way.

  • As the only boy in a family of three sisters, I remember well them playing Barbie. Their monologues, whether playing by themselves or with friends were always joyful. They would play with them for hours on end. I married a gal who Barbie also played a huge part in her life. The youngest of four, two of them boys who were sport stars, Barbie payed attention to her when no one else would while her brothers dominated the family dynamics. At sixty four years old now, my wife is very stylish and would be quick to credit Barbie for that. We have a fourtie year old daughter who also loved Barbie. She though, was more into weird Barbie, she's an artist and Barbie was an early canvas. There was a lot of clothing and physical modifications to Barbie from her. I'm sixty nine years old and Barbie has always been in my life through the woman in my life. I can't wait to see this movie. Thank you Margot and the brilliant Greta Gerwig.

  • It always floors me when people seem to think that Barbie isn't inherently feminist. In 1959, Mattel created "Barbie, Teen-Age Fashion Model". From the very beginning, she was a young woman who had a *job.* And she had several more jobs before she ever got a boyfriend. Feminism and femininity aren't mutually exclusive. You can be feminist in high heels and Birkenstocks. I'm a lifelong Barbie fan and collector, and to me Barbie's most salient feature was always her kindness. In Barbie's world, you are accepted and embraced, and it was always clear to me that she loved her female friends more than her boyfriend, considering how much she hung out with them as opposed to just being with Ken. In 1968, when "Barbie talk" was going all around, it was her friends Christie and Stacey that Barbie talked to, Ken wasn't even in the picture at all until 1969, when P.J. and Julia also joined in the talking fun. Malibu Barbie certainly invited Ken to the beach in 1971, but it wasn't a romantic outing. Her little sister Skipper was there, as was her cousin Francie and her two besties, Christie and P.J. When Barbie became a SuperStar in 1977, Christie was right there with her, but Ken didn't join their group until the following year. Very seldom was it just Barbie and Ken as a duo. In 1983, when Barbie and Ken went on their Dream Date, P.J. still managed to tag along. So yeah, it's easy to see that Ken might feel marginalized, but it's always seemed quite clear to me that Barbie's world has always had a message of women supporting women.

    • Wow… you just took me down memory lane. I grew up with Barbie in the 60s & 70s. I had Skipper, Barbie’s friends, the townhouse, the pool, the sports car, the camping set and probably more. Can’t remember if I ever had a Ken doll🤔. Thank you!

    • I think that talk was mostly about Barbie's proportions and that she was feminine. But you can be feminine and a feminist. I think that the proportions of the doll was more the parents concerned that the kids paying attention to it. I'm sure there were some who did want to look like Barbie, but not as widespread as it was made to believe. Weight and body image issues wasn't just caused by Barbies, it was a whole culture.

      @gethelp6271@gethelp627110 ай бұрын
    • @@gethelp6271 "sex doll" is not an accurate description of the Bild-Zeitung "Lilli" doll that Barbie was copied from. Lilli was a character doll, based on a cheeky, provocative character in a comic strip in the Bild-Zeitung newspaper in the 1950s. Today she would be more along the lines of a Funkopop or something, Lilli wasn't intended to be a plaything, but a 'gag gift' or a novelty gift, which would have a primarily adult male audience. The comic strip character was risqué by the standards of the day, kind of a 'gold-digger' archetype, but the doll was pretty tame all things considered. There wasn't any detailing of the naughty bits or anything like that, Lilli was much like a Barbie doll in appearance, even if the construction of the doll differed significantly. Barbie essentially took this overtly sexualized male-gaze archetype and turned it into an innocent teenage fashion model character, but the first iteration of the doll especially looked quite similar to the sultry vixen that was the original Bild Lilli doll.

Smart, direct, easily explaining what they are conveying. Greta saying how Margot just went in and asked what she wanted. I think I’m half projecting because I want / need to be like that. • The "You're good enough" movement has a beautiful intention, I believe. But it's also becoming an extremely easy escape for people who actually need to reflect on the distorted beliefs and sabotaging behaviors they need to acknowledge. We are all without question good enough to be heard, listened to, have a safe place to not fear discussions that may feel vulnerable. But being good enough does not mean that we are entitled for our opinions to be automatically accepted, for our disrespectful words to be tolerated, for equal access to lifestyle privileges that in reality mostly people who have to work really hard for can experience.

    • I think that being good enough does not mean that all sorts of behaviour should be accepted. It means that first of all one should accept the true, deep self. So some kind of ego free love for oneself without identifying with form or things. Once you accept and love yourself you are more resilient against negatives from the outside world and stop judging them . Just like Ken had accepted his true self and stopped the crazy behaviour. That gives you the power to remove yourself from unpleasant situations or to express the way you want to be treated (and the way you do not want it) without making things worse or dramatic.

She's right-- it feels awful to be taught that you merely exist as a man's trophy/ arm candy/ decoration/ etc. And to be told that your worth is limited to/ defined by your physical appearance.

  • The absolute number one reason why i am most excited to see this movie is because of these two women. They are each so impressively talented and mindblowingly intelligent and passionate about their craft that there's no way it will be anything less than spectacular. To be clear about just how important it is that this particular story be created from a female perspective, and how necessary it is for more female directors, screenwriters, and producers to be telling more and more and MORE stories in the entertainment media churned out by Hollywood, please consider this: When Little Women was released in 2019, it swept the awards circuit, winning numerous Golden Globes and other industry awards for direction, acting, screenplay, and costuming. Until the pinnacle of them all, the Academy Awards. It was nominated in almost all major categories - Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress, Florence Pugh for Best Supporting Actress, Greta Gerwig for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and many many others. The one notable award for which it was NOT nominated was Best Director for Gerwig. This is important because she was among a significant number of female directors that year who put out critically acclaimed or commercially successful movies and not a single one of them was nominated for the Best Director Oscar. Films like Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Book Smart, Hustlers, among others were snubbed by the Academy. And to such an egregious extent that Natalie Portman wore a custom made gown with the last names of these female directors embroidered on the dress as an act of silent petition and expression of her dissatisfaction. Women are exquisitely capable of telling robust, intelligent, nuanced stories. We NEED women like these two who are willing to push forward and keep telling them for the sake of telling them.

  • Maybe that's because of the final cut or something, but to be honest, in the film itself, there was nothing about the type of feminism Margo and Greta mentioned in this interview. Instead, it was rather a celebration of violence for violence. All we see is just two groups of people fighting for power and using this power to abuse the ones who lost. Exactly the kind of thing you get in the Hunger Games and other revolt-themed art. Colour it pink, sprinkle it with a bit of comedy, and you can sell any propaganda item without people noticing what they're fed. In what kind of world are we living today?

    @annachizhikowa@annachizhikowa10 ай бұрын
    • Hi! See from my perspective you got the main plot of the movie but your forgetting the ending! Throughout the whole movie the Barbie’s thought so little of the kens with the kens always wanting Barbie’s attention but the Barbie’s basically being off in their own little world and ignoring them most of the time. We then see it switched with the kens and the Kendom(I think that’s what it was called in the movie) where they took over and made Barbieland all about them and kind of made the Barbie’s their servants. Near the end of the movie when the Barbie’s take Barbieland over again the kens ask to be part of the government and help the Barbie’s run Barbieland. The Barbie’s were like sure you can help we’ll give you a job but your not ready to be president yet or anything big because you just don’t have the experience. So in the end you can believe that Barbieland would be equally run by both men and woman which is what feminism is. Also the whole movie kinda shows what woman go through on a daily basis, like when Barbie and ken originally got to the real world barbie felt very self conscious and was getting cat called while ken was soaking up the attention and felt noticed for the first time. I believe that cis another contributor to what Greta and Margot are talking about with the film being very feminist as it does talk about the, I want to say rare but I don’t think that’s the right word,but the rare side of being a woman that isn’t seen very much in cinema like it was in the Barbie movie. I don’t know I thought his movie was very feminist. I have only seen it once though so I don’t remember everything about the movie as it is a lot to take in at once. Anyways, I don’t know if this changes your view on this or just maybe jogs your memory from something you forgot about this movie and I’m not trying to make that happen! I just thought that the movie was great and yes most of the movie is very “violence on violence” as you talked about but that was kinda the lead up to the feminism I guess. Idk anyways have a great day:)))

I think Margot learned a lot from birds of prey, which has a lot of good elements but ultimately didn’t work in action, she says that comedy is hard to land, and birds of prey had that issue, the actors did a good job but the directing and editing didn’t make the comedy flow well, Greta seems to have comedy in her dna, so I think it will work. I'm not surprised she didn't know the word, as it's seldom recogniized in today's Hollywood, although many movies made today feature it. I'm a fan of both ladies, Greta, as both a director and an actress, but in spite of the statement that feminism in this movie raises all boats, I think in the end Ken, and the other Kens and males in the film, wind up at the end understanding misandry a lot better than Margot. After all, it is Barbie's movie, not Ken's. The poster for the film even states that fact. He's just Ken.
