IF YOU CAN, CONSIDER WATCHING ON A BIG SCREEN IN 4K OR 1080p, 60 FRAMES PER SECOND.
After months of deeply personal problems I don't wish to publicly disclose, Exo returns to continue this three part retrospective on Metroid II!
Last time, Exo discussed the Game Boy original.
Today, we return for a deep dive on AM2R: Return of Samus, one of the best fan games of all time. How well does AM2R hold up to a fresh playthrough, several years later? As a remake, how well does AM2R recreate and improve upon the Game Boy original? Finally, to what extent have the post-release updates from the AM2R Community Developers improved the overall experience? You'll have to watch the video to find out!
Look forward to the final part, where Exo finally discusses Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS. I'm aiming for a release next month.

Intro and Credits music composed and arranged by Noah Taublieb.
Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Demonstrably worse than the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Reprise: A relatively competent recreation that is still playable enough, but worse than the original in a few substantial ways. Alternatively, a Reprise may fail to address the original's salient issues or neglect to add anything substantial. Formerly called the "Re-Meh" score.
3- Remaster: An improvement overall, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own the original. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original. Rereleases with this score often don't reach their fullest potential or otherwise lack something meaningful you can only get in the original.
4- Remake: A strong rerelease that fixes salient issues, updates the visuals/music as applicable, and maybe adds new content. However, there may be a few blemishes left untouched or other neglected opportunities to improve.
5- Replace: A rerelease that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it stands heads and shoulders above the original version. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of worthwhile new content as applicable.

  • On your first AM2R video, right at the end you wished me good luck on my career as a game designer. A couple months later Moon Studios reached out with a job offer, so I'm eternally grateful! I'm not able to work on the game anymore, but it's great to see how much time, passion and talent the AM2R community have spent keeping the game alive. There's even a multiplayer mod that's actually quite good! Thanks for the honest and thorough look at the game after all this time, it's always an honor to be featured in this channel.

  • 49:55 We worked hard to eliminate all foreseeable soft-locks in the randomizer (the map can literally change if you are missing certain upgrades), but it is on the player to manage their power bomb ammo if they do not have regular bombs yet. Sometimes the worst seeds are ones where you only find one PB early on. It really does limit you until you have 2-3 of them and even then you want to make sure you recharge your ammo as much as possible.

    @CraigKostelecky@CraigKostelecky Жыл бұрын
    • It doesn't sound like enough. I just thought the best idea would be making the bomb tiles non-resetable, in other words, while you only have power bombs, the blocks permanently get destroyed That's how I see it

  • I replayed every 2D Metroid game for the release of Dread and I really wanted to play Samus Returns but it just isn't accessible. It only came out for the 3DS, which I don't have, and it's still decently expensive to track it down. AM2R was just there, and fundamentally it has a lot of accessibility built into it. I'm really glad I did cause AM2R is definitely one of my top Metroid experiences at this point.

  • The only reason I started working on the community updates is that I loved version 1.1 but hated the leg glitch. The original plan was to just fix the glitch for myself and be done. I mentioned the leg glitch fix to the community, so version 1.1.2 was made for speed runners with an additional audio glitch fix for Tester. After that CraigKostelecky figured out how to set up NG+ and I decided to start working on the randomizer. I’m amazed at how far the project has gone. Lojemiru and the team really have done incredible work with the game since I left. I do wonder sometimes how much of a future AM2R would have had if I didn’t pick it up. I would hope somebody else would have ran with it like I did. I do remember there was another person who was working on fixes when I brought out v1.2. I learned that after the fact. The critique for lack of explanations for the various randomizers modes is fair. I just didn’t want to get rid of old modes as I continued to work on it. Even with AM2Random, starting paths can still be fun. I was also using the text files a little too heavily to explain stuff. Interestingly, combining the power-ups with the items was a nightmare to figure out. There wasn’t a compatible naming convention between them. Basically I had to rewrite the IDs to match up so the pools worked right together but not break the game. It was tricky. That’s why the early versions had the separate randomizer pools between items and power-ups. I remember an early glitch where all items and power-ups turned into a 0 and floated off the screen. I still wish I would have saved that build. I'm glad you liked the randomizer. It generally was the main push for me and what I focused on the most. I'm very happy with how it came out in the end.

I personally liked the threat of the Metroids on Hard but I've only ever experienced 1.1 and now that I know how much more there is, I need to get a hand on the new versions. You can imagine my surprise booting into the game again after redownloading it for nostalgia just to be confused as hell by new enemies, trooper logs and bug patches... Here's hoping they finally allow enemies to drop power bombs.

I still have 1.0 and 1.1 saved from so many years ago. I had no idea there were more updates until I watched this video. So thanks for making this video. I will have to download the latest updates. It's really cool that the community brought the game back from the dead and are still planning on future updates.

  • Welcome back, Michael! Gotta say, I heard great things about the updates, but I didn't think the features were vastly different. I haven't played AM2R since 1.1, but it really does look like the community overhauled it. Fantastic review as always. Really looking forward to Samus Returns ROR.

  • Why do you not get more views. These are some of the most thorough remake analyses out there.

    • Because the algorithm needs new videos all the time and he uploads like once every 8 months

    • Like LPNP said, the algorithm requires frequent videos. It is very evident when a daily uploading youtuber getting millions of views takes something as small as a 1-3 day break and their views just happen to drop down to a couple hundred thousand.

  • Quite in depth video, I only really felt the missed opportunity to point out that the Personal Logs you find are references to Predator and Alien. The Federation Rescue Team are all named after the squad members of the first Predator and the Scientists they were sent to rescue share names with the Nostromo Crew. Not only that, their personalities match their counterparts. When I first noticed that it put a huge smile across my face and I couldn't wait to find the next Log.
