Is Fofana not more the hybrid 8 that Mainoo is and would be perfect back-up (and fairly cheap)? Agree with Sam on Mainoo and Bruno but we need back-ups. I'd love if we could get Fofana and both Hjulmand and Onana, with Mount back-up to Bruno and a hybrid option and we could sell Casemiro, Eriksen, Donny, Mejbri and probably McTominay to fund it.

KDB and Odegaard also vacate the area to do defensive duties they still perform exceptionally in attack.
But Bruno does more... Bruno falls back more than the other two you listed just to help out shaky defense

Great show again. Angelo Stiller is probably my favorite as CDM as he is both defensively strong and is a passing monster. Wieffer would be my second best option and probably more attainable, but seems a bit more risky as he is less proven than Stiller. I love Fofana as a defensive option. André Trindade, Mandela Keita and Palacios could be good options too. I would love to get Joey Veerman for higher up the pitch alongside Mainoo, but that would either change the system and/or bench Bruno

I think everything will depend on what Berrada & company decides style, philosophy, and set ut will be. And of course our budget and if we go for short term or long term solutions. finally depends on how much influence we give the manager in recruitment.
Rodri and Rice as CDMs do all the dirty jobs of their teams otherwise City and Arsenal defense ain't that good as well. A good number 6 will covers & protects your defense line. Example: Casemiro was exceptional last season and United kept the most clean sheets, now it's the other way around.

Frenkie De Jong's defensive prowess is underrated.
He doesn’t want to come ten hag tried to get him and he chose to stay at Barca
Hjulmand will do the job perfectly. He's a good passer with great vision, calm under pressure like Mainoo, and tackles like Casemiro - he's the ideal player for United! However, there are rumors that he might join Arsenal if they show interest. Meanwhile, we should also consider another CDM as Amrabat is leaving. Guido Rodriguez, a 30-year-old World Cup winner with great experience, is a free agent and would be an excellent fit for Manchester United. He's still in his prime and would bring great depth to the squad.
Kobbie I think could be any of the 3 midfielders tbh. But yeah I think the no8 position is probably where he's at his best. Without doubt ATM though he's currently our best 6 by a country mile, so we would unfortunately need for him to sacrifice his attacking instincts & show his discipline & natural ability to recieve the ball off the CHs & protect the back 4 as our 6. His defensive work & the smell of danger is quality & could easily do that job IMO. Again agree with you Sam though, we need to release him from the shackles of the 6 position to get the best out of him..

Exactly we need a better technical 6, just someone physical isnt enough, in that position at united we need a better more technical player if we want to control possession and control games, dyche didnt even play him yesterday in the win against Liverpool and subbed him on later.
What we need is someone like prime Casemiro of prime Kante. That would change a lot. Proficient on the ball and a defensive monster.
Mats Wieffer is the CDM we need, but if Liverpool get slot, Wieffer might go with him

Hjulmand looks good, big, strong in the tackle, gets the odd goal from outside the box, good passing range

Ross Barkley & Dewsbury Hall are all we need, both premier league proven, both put in the dirty work and both are technical players who are very comfortable on the ball. No need to overspend on hype!
I think we need atleast two new midfielders. 1) defensive midfielder ( to rotate with casemiro) 2) playmaker ( to rotate with kobie maino) My midfield for the next season 1) bruno/ mct , kobie maino , new dm 2) mount/mct, new cm, casemiro

Spot on. Also for depth, we need some to give bruno a rest in less hectic and stressful games. McTominnay can sort of step in for Mainoo in some cases and if Casemiro stays he can compliment the monster in some situations. But Bruno needs back-up. That area is very critical for us. And he is not getting younger either.
Funny how you didn't mention Joao Neves. Fits all your criteria in possession and out of possession perfectly. Though he will be expensive but that's who we need. If not for age I'd go for Palhinha but we can only get 1 or 2 good seasons from him before looking for another DM

Sam have u ever thought about us switching to a 3-4-3 formation, maybe thats why we are not being linked to a pure out and out cdm to partner mainoo but instead, defensive minded box to box midfienders so we play with 2 centrel midfielders with mainoo being more attacking, our academy has also played with this formation in certain games this season

You just opened my eyss, that's exactly what we want,we are good at attafk,we have cm as mainoo and cam as bruno,but we are litterally missing a good cdm and thus acres of open space during countered
I don't think Sam watched enough of Amadou Onana 😂 He's average, not even an untouchable, a guaranteed, a standout player in that low defensive line, long ball Everton. He may look like a monster, he may have that physicality but he only knows how to use like 50% of that. I think we should watch closely Wieffer because of Feyenoord style & Monaco's Fofana although he's not that rapid
Onana is bang average and technically not at the level required for a top 4 team, look how Kobbie dispossessed him on the edge of his own box in the England game nearly leading to a goal. Ederson from Atalanta I think would be much better and could rotate alongside with Kobbie as Ederson has good stamina and discipline. He's fairly quick and athletic and technically good, he can also go forward but more importantly do the defensive side. I'm not sure what price he would be but almost certainly cheaper than Onana and he's only 25ish so coming into his peak years.
There is definitely a problem in our midfield but the major issue is our defence. We need cbs who have the pace and composure with them and be able to dictate the play and closing the spaces behind the midfield.

Sort out the defence first and to me Kobbie lacks the pace needed to be a box to box player, he could improve his game involvement on a regular basis.A big annoyance is Hojlund's roll when the opposition have the ball and his desire to get it by just jogging over,on the other hand when we have the ball he is blanked so many times.
1)Palinha should be the one in my opinion 2) ollie arblaster he is only 19 and incredibly industrious . 3) jobe Bellingham not based on fame but he is a proper midfielder 4)benat prados from athletic club is one that caught my eye along with 5)Angelo stiller from stuttgart

I would have loved you to talk about Back Up Options as well. I think United needs a backup/rival for Mainoo und a backup for the new number 6 as well.

I think Mainoo is so good that you could probably just keep on passing him the ball, anywhere on the pitch, and tell him "Just go and score a goal" and he would probably be able to do it. Maybe I'm exaggerating slightly, but that just seems to be the kind of player he is; like you often see him run past a few players with ease, and it seems like he eventually passes the ball to a teammate, not because he has to, but because he thinks that's what he's supposed to do. Like he doesn't want to hold onto it for too long. I think we're going to see a lot of wondergoals from him over the next few seasons..

We have such a player to complement Bruno and Kobbie: He is Frenkie De Jong. But now he is in Barca.

@@Astech81 both Mainoo and de Jong are not primarily defensively orientated. I think if you had a player that would be as comfortable on the ball but more defense orientated it would be a better fit for playing next to Mainoo
Before we go to midfield lets start in defence. In defence, if we sign and sell the right players, it would be onana, geertruida, todibo, martinez and malacia. Then in midfield, bruno as an 8, fofana from monaco as 6 and mount as a 10.
I want Wieffer. He is a complete midfielder Athletic, Technical and Intelligent. Reads the game, screens the back four and can then resist the press and play the ball forward. 24 and coming into his prime, only ever had one serious injury in his career.
Rubén Neves was the perfect option, shame United never went for him, I don't know his actual shape

The out of possession monster who can also be part of the build up: Lisandro Martinez!! I'm not even joking. If you've seen him play you know he ticks all those boxes and to top it off he has the fierceness to go and win every ball and he's already well established in our squad. That said we would still need a 2nd CDM with the same profile because licha gets injured too frequently.

I particularly like Ethan Wheatley pressing from the front , the boy could have got his goal ; there was an instant where Bruno hesitated passing to him or Amad Diallo on the right who was actually raising his hand to be seen in the dying moments of the game , Bruno was not decisive enough 😢 ,he passed to Garnacho and how did that turn out 😮! There are few things and details that could have helped us beat them comfortably,far from being a little bit slopy . Pass more to Amad Diallo, the ball stayed in the left unnecessarily too long , Garnacho was trying too much ,he would have had a couple of assists yesterday without necessarily being on score sheet. We will be tired but I hope they do a job against Burnley, don't bottle it !!!

We need a 6 and two 8s who boost of energy, high IQ, awareness, appreciation of space, and high technical security. For the 6, I'd go with Florentino Luis/Maxence Caqueret/Joao Palhinha. For the two 8s, I'd go with Andre Trindade & Ederson Dos Santos/ Youssef Fofana & Amadou Onana.
Hard to pick a new no6 who is available ATM that I fully rate, that is the problem. Rice was a must buy for me last summer, still gutted we didn't go all in on him..😢 Hopefully our scouts can do some quality homework & find us an up & coming Rice in the summer. We will see. Not big on Onana at Everton though, I just don't see enough quality there.. The holding midfield position is crucial to all great teams & the rock to build around. ATM if no one is obvious out there, I'd rather we gave Kobbie the job until a quality option became available.. I do think when we move away from this crazy midfield ETH has adopted, you will see our midfield perform much better🙏 & our current players will benefit from a more stable structure. 1 player that has been totally exposed by this shape Casemiro. He could be a lot, lot better in a team that doesn't have so many holes through the middle & could pos do a job for 1 more season if a new manager came in & reverted back to a more conventional shape ie a 4-2-3-1..
Totally agree with your Bruno view, Sam. Keep him away from our box at all costs & have him coursing problems in the opposition final third all game & you'll see the Bruno Fernandez of old consistently.. Personally think he shouldn't be captain also, as this is almost forcing him to try & do everyone's else's job because he feels he needs to as Captain, it's just the way he is.. The truth, he serves everyone much better if he just did what made him a top player in the 1st place & just concentrate on causing havoc in the oppositions box..😊👍
Rocco Reitz is the player I would target or his profile / young just coming into his own so will be cheap to acquire / wins a lot of duels and is a good passer / way better than overpaying to the hilt for EPL players or players in their late 20's / target guys 23 to 26 in every position

i think we have to buy a few defenders and some coz our injuries toward our players is shocking. Or get a new team physician coz damn to long they are injured!!
We will need cover in these positions, at least similar quality players. One long term injury or spate of injuries like we have this season will just derail everything again.

What needs to happen is Donny Eriksen McTominay Hannibal need to go with Bruno with Scanlon from the academy as his backup Mainoo and Casemiro rotating as box to box midfielders with Joao Neves coming in as the defensive midfielder and Jack Fletcher as his back up we could add Dan Gore as and extra we would be ok with this if we don’t have a nightmare of injuries like this season the focus has to be the back four as that’s were all are transfer budget needs to go or will be useless again next season but on a positive the front three will be strong next season just through academy players will have Garnacho, Diallo and Lacey as their back up on the left Greenwood and Antony or Pallistri on the right and Hojlund and Wheatley as his back up

We need the youth to get more time to develop . Maybe add 1 or 2 experienced players. The coaching tactics are key to their success.
Fernandes has changed since he got the captain's badge. It definitely looks like he's taking on too much, but with the current midfield he needs to. We really need a specialized defensive midfielder for next season.

A plan is only good if your players stick to it. I think Bruno is too emotional and ends up losing his discipline and staying where he is meant to and then ends up all over the place. We need a sitting midfielder who can break up play but can also pass. A Carrick type. Mainoo and Bruno need to tag team so that we one “hybrid” player who can drop if needed or bomb forward ….
We need a ball winning midfield that can dictate play if we use bruno. Good luck with that
